I am unable to turn my Automatic Updates on, and when I attempt to start the service manually (Manage My Computer, Services, Automatic Updates), I receive the following message:

Could not start the Automatic Updates service on Local Computer

Error 1058: The service cannot be started, either because it is disabled or because it has no enabled devices associated with it

In addition to this, I have been receiving several pop-ups and my computer has been running slower than usual.

Please help!

Hi bnl_lover,

This sounds like malware. Your thread needs to be moved to the Am I Infected Forum. If possible, please use your computer as little as possible until someone can get you the scans you need.
