Erasing DVD files from rewriteable disc?

I thought I'd be clever and efficient and buy some rewritable DVD's (DVD+RW) for taking films through to the big TV but when it comes to rewriting the DVD files are read only and I cant seem to change that so cant delete/move/modify the files, whats the trick?
