Hello Benjamin,

I see several trojans and viruses on your computer. Run the following scans.

Please download, update and run (one at a time of course!)
Spybot 1.3 and Adaware SE

Fix whatever they suggest.

***************************************************

If you need help running these tools, here are some helpful tutorials.
Spybot 1.3 Tutorial
Adaware SE Tutorial

***************************************************

Be sure to run Adaware SE with a Full Scan in the Safe Mode.

How to Reboot into Safe Mode
tap F8 key during reboot, until the boot menu appears...use the arrow keys to choose "Safe Mode" from the menu......,then press the "Enter" key.

The following explains how to set Ad-aware's settings to perform a "Full Scan."

In Ad-aware click the Gear to go to the Settings area.

The following items should be on a green check, not on a red X.

Under the Scanning button:
Scan within archives
Under Memory & Registry, Check EVERYTHING
In Check Drives & Folders, make sure all of your hard drives are selected

Under the Advanced button, check ALL under Log detail level.

Under the Tweak button...

Some of these may not be an available option, depending on your version of Ad-aware and your version of Windows. Do not be concerned if you cannot select a certain item.

In Scanning Engine:
Unload recognized processes during scanning
Include info about ignored objects in logfile, if detected in scan
Include basic Ad-aware settings in logfile
Include additional Ad-aware settings in logfile
Include used command line parameters in logfile

In Cleaning Engine:
XP/2000: Allow unloading explorer to unload shell extensions prior to deletion
Let Windows remove files in use at next reboot
UNCHECK: Automatically try to unregister objects prior to deletion

Click Proceed to save these settings. When you would like to perform a "Full Scan," switch the scan mode from SmartScan to Custom.

***************************************************

Please download, update and run the free A2 (A squared) anti-trojan

Let it fix whatever it wants to.

***************************************************

I know you may have anti-virus software, but sometimes its definitions are corrupted due to malware. Online scans are the best resort in this case.
Run this pc through the
Trend Micro Housecall Online virus scanner (Beta)
or
Panda Scan Online virus scanner

***************************************************

Next, reboot and post a fresh HijackThis log to this thread.

Please post the logs from your Adaware SE last scan, as I need to check some of the running processes.

The fastest way to get the Adaware SE log is to navigate to your Ad-aware SE folder: C:\Documents and Settings\USER NAME\Application Data\Lavasoft\Ad-Aware\Logs.

Open this folder and find the correct log.
The logs are named "Ad-Aware-log ##-##-##.txt (the #'s will be the date of the scan). Highlight all of the text in the logfile with your mouse.
On your keyboard, press Ctrl + C, which will copy the text to your clipboard.
Now be online, logged in and ready to post your logfile.
Press Ctl and V and that will copy your logfile to the post!

Also, would you please post your A2 trojan scan log.
If I've saved you time & money,
please make a donation so I can keep helping people just like you! You can donate using a credit card and PayPal. Thank you!

Hello BenjaminWard,

Where do I find my A2 log?

That's OK, you do not have to post the A2 log, as the Adaware log gave me the informaiton I needed;however, if you want to save a log file just click on "Save HTML-Report". By default, scanlogs are created in the a-squared folder but of course you can specify a different location.

Uninstall LookSmart Toolbar from the Add/Remove panel if listed

How to Reboot into Safe Mode
tap F8 key during reboot, until the boot menu appears...use the arrow keys to choose "Safe Mode" from the menu......,then press the "Enter" key.

Please boot into Safe Mode and select the following with HijackThis.
With all windows (including this one!) closed (close browser/explorer windows), please select "fix.”
R3 - URLSearchHook: LookSmart Toolbar - {CC8C8F4F-F2E8-404B-A43D-5CC57876A008} - C:\Program Files\LookSmart Toolbar\tbu7\toolbar.dll (file missing)
O2 - BHO: XBTB01232 - {BBBE1C1A-89F7-4AF6-ABD1-F8FBCFA47408} - C:\PROGRA~1\LOOKSM~1\tbu7\toolbar.dll (file missing)
O2 - BHO: Cls - {CF021F40-3E14-23A5-CBA2-717765728274} - C:\WINDOWS\system32\wer8274.dll
O3 - Toolbar: LookSmart Toolbar - {CC8C8F4F-F2E8-404B-A43D-5CC57876A008} - C:\Program Files\LookSmart Toolbar\tbu7\toolbar.dll (file missing)
O3 - Toolbar: (no name) - {62999427-33FC-4baf-9C9C-BCE6BD127F08} - (no file)
O9 - Extra button: Microsoft AntiSpyware helper - {2312FD89-2AAC-4873-A8F5-B45F1752FCC3} - (no file) (HKCU)
O9 - Extra 'Tools' menuitem: Microsoft AntiSpyware helper - {2312FD89-2AAC-4873-A8F5-B45F1752FCC3} - (no file) (HKCU)

Go to My Computer and double-click C.
Go to the Tools menu and select 'Folder Options'.
On the 'View' tab select 'show hidden files and folders' and deselect (uncheck) 'hide protected operating system files (recommended)'.

Find and delete each of the following. If you can't delete an item, right-click it and click properties. Make sure 'read-only' is unchecked.
If you still can't delete something, right-click it and rename it to a random word. Then drag the item to a different location. Try deleting it now. If you still can't, be sure to let me know.

Delete the following files/folders in bold (Do not be concerned if they do not exist)

C:\PROGRA~1\LOOKSM~1\tbu7\ <==folder
C:\WINDOWS\system32\wer8274.dll <==file
C:\Program Files\LookSmart Toolbar\ <==folder

Let's empty the temp files:

Download CCleaner and install it. (default location is best).
Select the Windows Tab, Run CCleaner ,(click Run Cleaner (bottom right) then, when it finishes scanning click Exit.)
When you see "Complete" on the top line, it's done. It's very fast.

I recommend that you DO NOT run anything under the Issues Tab and the Applications Tab. To prevent accidently running the Issues Tab and Applicatons tabs, clear all check boxes are under them.

Finally, reboot and post a new Hijackthis log, and tell me how your computer is running.
If I've saved you time & money,
please make a donation so I can keep helping people just like you! You can donate using a credit card and PayPal. Thank you!

Hello BenjaminWard,

You still have a few adware reminents, so that is the reason you computer is slow. We will have them off shortly. You may still have a trojans or worms lurking, so we will run some scans for that.

***************************************************

Go to Add/Remove Programs in the Control Panel, choose the ‘NavHelper’ entry, click ‘Remove’ and restart.

Do the same for LookSmart Toolbar

***************************************************

How to Reboot into Safe Mode
tap F8 key during reboot, until the boot menu appears...use the arrow keys to choose "Safe Mode" from the menu......,then press the "Enter" key.

Please boot into Safe Mode and select the following with HijackThis.
With all windows (including this one!) closed (close browser/explorer windows), please select "fix.”

R0 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Search,SearchAssistant = http://search.looksmart.com/p/search?pi=lstb2&tv=1
O3 - Toolbar: LookSmart Toolbar - {CC8C8F4F-F2E8-404B-A43D-5CC57876A008} - C:\Program Files\LookSmart Toolbar\tbu7\toolbar.dll (file missing)
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [navapp] C:\Program Files\NavExcel\NavHelper\v2.0.4d\navapp.exe

***************************************************

C:\Program Files\LookSmart Toolbar\ <== folder

I recommend that you DO NOT run anything under the Issues Tab and the Applications Tab. To prevent accidently running the Issues Tab and Applicatons tabs, clear all check boxes are under them.

***************************************************
Please download, update and run the free A2 (A squared) anti-trojan
Let it fix whatever it wants to.

Save a log file by clicking on "Save HTML-Report".

***************************************************

Run this pc through the
Trend Micro Housecall Online virus scanner (Beta)
or
Panda Scan Online virus scanner

Let it delete whatever it finds.

***************************************************

Finally, reboot and post a new Hijackthis log, and tell me how your computer is running.

my a2 log reported no malwares found

whenever i run these programs my Spysweeper pops up after i reboot telling me that my browser has been hijacked and it asks me to restore it.

You lost me.
Whenever you run what programs?
Do you mean Hijackthis?
Are using Spysweeper to block the fixes that Hijackthis is making?
Does Spysweeper tell you who the hijacker is?

You only have one item left to fix.

How to Reboot into Safe Mode
tap F8 key during reboot, until the boot menu appears...use the arrow keys to choose "Safe Mode" from the menu......,then press the "Enter" key.

Please boot into Safe Mode and select the following with HijackThis.
With all windows (including this one!) closed (close browser/explorer windows), please select "fix.”

R0 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Search,SearchAssistant = http://search.looksmart.com/p/search?pi=lstb2&tv=1

Run CCleaner.
Select the Windows Tab, Run CCleaner ,(click Run Cleaner (bottom right) then, when it finishes scanning click Exit.)
When you see "Complete" on the top line, it's done.

I recommend that you DO NOT run anything under the Issues Tab and the Applications Tab. To prevent accidently running the Issues Tab and Applicatons tabs, clear all check boxes are under them.

Reboot and post fresh log.

but I still can't change my background. It's plain white.

I need more information. Why can't you change the background. What happens when you try to change the background?

Have you done this: rt. click the Desktop> choose Properties> Desktop tab> Background> select None?

If that does not work, then try this: Right click blank area of Desktop > Properties > Desktop tab > Customize > Web tab, untick 'Lock desktop items. (remember to Apply the change)

Also for reference, I found and deleted C:\WINDOWS\Web\desktop.html. After deleting it, the advertisement on my background went from an advertisement to a white screen. When I move my toolbar i can see black beneath it, but all the help i've read on this problem have been ineffective for me. I don't have a Background tab or anything like that for some reason.

The log looks clean! Good job on the cleanup!

Please read and follow
How did I get infected?, With steps so it does not happen again!

It seems that you don't use an anti-virus scanner or your scanner is not active. Only an anti-virus scanner can protect you against new viruses.
I recommend you download the free AVG virus program

No active firewall was found on your system or the firewall you use is unknown to me. A firewall is your first line of defense against malware.
I recommend you download and install the free Sygate Personal Firewall

Now for your white desktop background.

Go to Desktop Properties and find under Desktop>Customize Desktop>Web tab>look for secure.html page in active desktop list.
Deleated it and reboot.

If that does not work, then try this:
Control Panel> display>desk top tab> customize options button>web tab>look for "security". Deleted it and check the button that says "Lock desktop items"

I found a fix here:
http://www.d-a-l.com/help/printthread.php?t=1091

it sounds like something has set the computer to show an Active Desktop.

The computer has been set to show a certain webpage as the Desktop and when you right click and select properties, you are showing the Properties of that webpage. So we need to delete that webpage. So go to C:\WINDOWS\Web\ and delete desktop.html

Then go to the Control Panel and double click Display. Go to the Desktop tab and at the bottom click Customise Desktop. Then go to the Web tab. There should be a box with a list of Active Desktops. Remove the checkmark from next to all of them and delete each one except My Current Home Page which cannot be removed. Then reset your Desktop Wallpaper.
