Another very stubborn XP infection -- any ideas?

The wife clicked some "antivirus warning" she shouldn't have. Now the Google search points to various strange sites. And the system boots up with the firewall inactive.

Here are the characteristics of the now-infected computer system (Windows XP, SP3). All of the following were also tried in "safe" mode:

- Avast antivirus was previously installed and had the latest update, but a lengthy Thorough scan of the system did not indicate any problems.

- AVG was already installed, but my attempt to perform an update got blocked.

- Downloaded and tried to run Smitfraudfix.exe, but could not because of error message "has encountered a problem".

- Downloaded and tried to install superantispyware, but could not because of error message "has encountered a problem".

- Downloaded and successfully installed malwarebytes and its update, but the program would not launch (double click on icon and nothing happens).

- Downloaded and successfully installed SpybotSD, but the program would not launch (double click on icon and nothing happens).

- Downloaded hijackthis, but when I doubleclicked on the icon to install it, nothing happened and program was not installed.

- Various potentially useful websites are blocked, like Microsoft Update for example. I am entering this note from another system.

Please help. I'm stuck. If only I could get one or two of the antivirus programs running, I might at least have a chance starting to eliminate the problems. Thanks in advance for anything you might be able to suggest.

Hi,

Download ServiceLookup to your Desktop.
Unpack servicelookup.zip (right click > "Unpack all" - You don't have to change anything in the unpacking process)
Now, doubleclick ServiceLookup.exe and follow the steps.
A logfile will open (servicelookup.txt), post that logfile in your next reply.

Hi,

I'm going to redirect you to the HijackThissection of this forum. This, because it's a deeper infection.
Read this page and follow it's steps: http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/t/34773/preparation-guide-for-use-before-using-malware-removal-tools-and-requesting-help/

Good luck.

Thanks, superbird.

I just ran the DDS on the infected system and posted the results over in the Hijackthis section as you suggested.

A big step will just be getting some sort of AV diagnostic program to run!

Hello zarf,

Now that your log is posted here: http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/t/187033/xp-sp3-infection-prevents-running-av-programs-and-accessing-av-sites/ you should NOT make further changes to your computer (install/uninstall programs, use special fix tools, delete files, edit the registry, etc) unless advised by a HJT Team member, nor should you continue to ask for help elsewhere. Doing so can result in system changes which may not show in the log you already posted. Further, any modifications you make on your own may cause confusion for the helper assisting you and could complicate the malware removal process which would extend the time it takes to clean your computer.

From this point on the HJT Team should be the only members that you take advice from, until they have verified your log as clean.

Please be patient. It may take a while to get a response because the HJT Team members are EXTREMELY busy working logs posted before yours. They are volunteers who will help you out as soon as possible. Once you have made your post and are waiting, please DO NOT make another reply until it has been responded to by a member of the HJT Team. Generally the staff checks the forum for postings that have 0 replies as this makes it easier for them to identify those who have not been helped. If you post another response there will be 1 reply. A team member, looking for a new log to work may assume another HJT Team member is already assisting you and not open the thread to respond.

If after 5 days you still have received no response, then post a link to your HJT log in the thread titled "Haven't Had A Reply In Five Days?".

To avoid confusion, I am closing this topic. Good luck with your log.
