I am trying to replace the hard drive in an Acer Aspire 3020 laptop, as I believe the old one had failed (tried it in an external enclosure, but it didn't work).
It had an Hitachi 100g hard drive, and I am trying to replace it with a Hitachi 40g. The interfaces look the same. When I put it in, it wasn't seen in the BIOS settings, and the optical drive won't work if it is in place,
I have replaced hard drives in PC's before, but not in laptops. Am I doing something wrong? Is there a chance that the hard drive is not compatible? Before installing it, I tested it in an external enclosure, and it appeared to work alright. Any ideas of what else could be wrong if not the hard drive?
