Hi

I have picked up Virtumonde and used various tools to attempt to remove it, but it keeps coming back.

Spybot is also reporting Smitfraud.c (which is also recurring) but other scanners dont seem to pick this up.

I would appreciate any help. Here is the RSIT log

Hello,

Thanks.

I notice that you have Spybot's TeaTimer running. While this is normally a wonderful tool to protect against hijackers, it can also interfere with the fixes. So please disable TeaTimer by doing the following:
1) Run Spybot-S&D
2) Go to the Mode menu, and make sure "Advanced Mode" is selected
3) On the left hand side, choose Tools -> Resident
4) Uncheck "Resident TeaTimer" and OK any prompts

You can reenable TeaTimer once your system is clean.

Your Java is way out of date, which leaves your computer vulnerable.

Updating Java
  • Download the latest version of Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 6_u_10.
  • Scroll down to where it says "The J2SE Runtime Environment (JRE) allows end-users to run Java applications".
  • Click the "Download" button to the right.
  • Check the box that says: "Accept License Agreement".
  • The page will refresh.
  • Click on the link to download Windows Offline Installation with or without Multi-language and save to your desktop.
  • Close any programs you may have running - especially your web browser.
  • Go to Start > Control Panel double-click on Add/Remove programs and remove all older versions of Java.
  • Check any item with Java Runtime Environment (JRE or J2SE) in the name.
  • Click the Remove or Change/Remove button.
  • Repeat as many times as necessary to remove each Java versions.
  • Reboot your computer once all Java components are removed.
  • Then from your desktop double-click on jre-6-windows-i586.exe to install the newest version.
Please download Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware from one of these places:
http://www.majorgeeks.com/Malwarebytes_Ant...ware_d5756.html
http://www.besttechie.net/mbam/mbam-setup.exe

Double Click mbam-setup.exe to install the application.

* Make sure a checkmark is placed next to Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware, then click Finish.
* If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
* Once the program has loaded, select "Perform Quick Scan", then click Scan.
* The scan may take some time to finish,so please be patient.
* When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
* Make sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
* When disinfection is completed, a log will open in Notepad and you may be prompted to Restart.(See Extra Note)
* The log is automatically saved by MBAM and can be viewed by clicking the Logs tab in MBAM.
* Copy&Paste the entire report in your next reply along with a fresh HijackThis log.

Extra Note:
If MBAM encounters a file that is difficult to remove, you will be presented with 1 of 2 prompts, click OK to either and let MBAM proceed with the disinfection process,if asked to restart the computer, please do so immediately.

Thanks,
tea
Please make a donation so I can keep helping people just like you.

Hello,

Good....those funny looking ones you can't find anything on worry me until I know. How is it running please?

Please run HijackThis! and click "Scan." Place checks next to the following entries, if present:

O23 - Service: MySQL - Unknown owner - C:\Program.exe (file missing)

Close all browsers and other windows except for HijackThis!, and click "Fix checked".

Reboot your computer.

Would you give MBAM another run to make sure nothing was left behind? :)

Thanks,
tea

Hi tea,

Thanks again for your help.

The machine seems to be running ok - i didnt notice anything abnormal throughout yesterday.

This morning I have followed your latest instructions, and while MBAM found nothing (hurrah!) the weird thing was my Trend Real-time Scanner popped up 6 times during the MBAM was scan, each time reporting a find of Vundo. Each report was either a random file in system32, or it was found in Content.IE5 (Temporary Internet files), and all were deleted successfully.

So although I havent seen a popup in a while, I'm now uncertain as to whether everything is clean.

Latest HJT log any use?

Hello,

Some housekeeping may help that. :)

Please download ATF Cleaner by Atribune.Double-click ATF-Cleaner.exe to run the program.
Under Main choose: Select All
Click the Empty Selected button.
If you use Firefox browserClick Firefox at the top and choose: Select All
Click the Empty Selected button.
NOTE: If you would like to keep your saved passwords, please click No at the prompt.
If you use Opera browserClick Opera at the top and choose: Select All
Click the Empty Selected button.
NOTE: If you would like to keep your saved passwords, please click No at the prompt.
Click Exit on the Main menu to close the program.
For Technical Support, double-click the e-mail address located at the bottom of each menu.

Click Start Menu > Run > type (or copy and paste)

%SystemRoot%\System32\restore\rstrui.exe

Press OK. Choose Create a Restore Point then click Next. Name it ( something you'll remember) and click Create, when the confirmation screen shows the restore point has been created click Close.

Next goto Start Menu > Run > type

cleanmgr

Click OK, Disk Cleanup will open and start calculating the amount of space that can be freed, Once thats finished it will open the Disk Cleanup options screen, click the More Options tab then click Clean up on the system restore area and choose Yes at the confirmation window which will remove all the restore points except the one we just created.

To close Disk Cleanup and remove the Temporary Internet Files detected in the initial scan click OK then choose Yes on the confirmation window.

Let me know what they say now please.

Thanks,
tea

Hi tea

I followed instructions, and then re-did the MBAM scan. It found nothing again, but this time the Trend real time scanner popped up 3 times, and they all pointed to something within Content.IE5. [So at least the system32 references have been cleaned up :D]

It appears that these files are regenerating themselves, so I manually cleaned out Content.IE5, and removed index.dat by closing explorer and using task manager to close services responsible for locking it, and then removed index.dat via command prompt. (index.dat has locks on all the time explorer is running and I believe was resonsible for the regenerating). I then rebooted.

I then re-ran your last set of instructions, creating a new restore point and removing everything before it.

I then ran MBAM and it found nothing, plus Trend also found nothing.

I am guessing this is it?!

Thanks very much for your help on this.

Hello,

You're most welcome. :)

Yes, I do believe we're done.

Be sure to re enable Tea Timer if you haven't already. You have some good protection in place, though I would suggest a firewall. Some good free firewalls are Kerio, or Outpost. I use Comodo on my own system and really like it. http://comodo.com
A tutorial on understanding and using firewalls may be found here.

Take care!
tea
