Yes, providing that the license for the XP Pro allows you to (for example, I'd suspect that you couldn't do this with an OEM copy of XP - but I'm not real sure).
Ensure that you choose the Upgrade option from within Windows - that'll save your stuff during the upgrade. If it's not available, don't try to force it - you may destroy your data this way.
OTOH - I don't like upgrade installations. They've given me more problems than I care to deal with. I prefer a clean installation - that way you don't import the problems from the old installation.
