Please help me decipher this hijackthis log. My neighbor brought her laptop over and said that she gets porn icons on her desktop that she can't delete and her IE browser gets redirected to a porn site. She also gets porn pop up. She says that she had borrowed her fathers laptop and that he is a minister. She is pleading with me to fix it because she claims this would kill her father.

Hello Voodoobones and welcome to BleepingComputer. Let's see what we can do...

Configure Windows to enable viewing of Hidden and System files.

Start HJT and click on the SCAN button. Put a check mark in front of the following lines if they still show:

R0 - HKCUSoftwareMicrosoftInternet ExplorerMain,Start Page = http://www.newgenlook.info/ad/ad0352/
O2 - BHO: (no name) - {A78860C8-EE1A-46DF-A97F-E3E6D433E80B} - C:WINDOWSSYSTEM32i92g4r.dll
O4 - HKLM..RunOnce: [3wogf6.exe] C:WINDOWSSystem32wogf6.exe /k
O23 - Service: Mouse Hardware Sync (mousehs) - Unknown owner - C:WINDOWSSystem32mousehs.exe

With ALL OTHER WINDOWS CLOSED, click on Fix Checked.

Still within HijackThis, click on the Config... button.
- Click on the Misc Tools.
- Click on Delete an NT Service....
- Copy and paste into the dialog box mousehs and click OK.
- Close HijackThis.

Open Windows Explorer (Windows key+e), navigate to and delete the following files (Don't be concerned if they can not be found):

C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\i92g4r.dll
C:\WINDOWS\System32\wogf6.exe
C:\WINDOWS\System32\mousehs.exe

If any of these resist being deleted, boot into Safe Mode and try from there.

Download Silent Runners and unzip it into it's own folder.

Run SilentRunners.vbs.
If your antivirus complains, tell it to allow this script.

Copy and paste the content of the Silent Runners textfile you get afterwards in your next reply, along with a fresh HJT log.

Download Killbox.exe to your desktop.
Run killbox.exe.
Select the option "Delete on reboot".
In the field "Full Path of File to Delete" copy and paste:

C:\WINDOWS\System32\param32.dll

Choose the option: "unregister dll before deleting"
Then press the button that looks like a red circle with a white X in it.
Killbox will tell you that all listed files will be deleted on next reboot.. Click YES.
When it asks if you would like to Reboot now, click YES.
If you get a "PendingFileRenameOperations Registry Data has been Removed by External Process!" message then just restart manually.

Open Notepad, (Start button, click on Run, type in Notepad, and click OK) copy & pastes the following block of text into Notepad.

REGEDIT4

[-HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Classes\CLSID\{D56A1203-1452-EBA1-7294-EE3377770000}]

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\SharedTaskScheduler]
"{D56A1203-1452-EBA1-7294-EE3377770000}"=-

Click on 'File', then 'Save as'
Select 'Save as type:' as All Files,
Save the file to the desktop as fix.reg. Close Notepad.
Doubleclick on fix.reg and answer Yes when prompted to add the contents to the registry.

Reboot once again into Safe Mode.

Start HJT and click on the SCAN button. Put a check mark in front of the following lines if they still show:

R0 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Start Page = http://www.newgenlook.info/ad/ad0352/

With ALL OTHER WINDOWS CLOSED, click on Fix Checked.

Reboot normally. Clear any unwanted icons and other junk this infection has added to the desktop and favorites.

Post a fresh HJT log. How are things looking?

Log looks clean...great job!

Keep HijackThis along with it's backup folder for a bit just in case there arises a need for the backup files it has created. The rest of the tools we downloaded and files we created can be uninstalled or deleted. If we have enabled viewing of Hidden and System files, go back and re-hide these files.

If this is a Windows XP system: After you have used your machine a while, and are confident that all is well, a little final cleanup is advisable.

Purge Restore points:

XP System Restore periodically creates a partial system backup. It is quite likely that some of the now removed malware has been 'backed up' in those files.

Disable System Restore by following the instructions here,
Reboot,
Re-enble System Restore by following the instructions here.

Run Disk Cleanup

Click on the Start button and then on Run. Type in cleanmgr then click on OK. Be sure the (C:) drive is selected and click OK. It may take a bit for "Compress old files" to complete. Check all the boxes and click on OK, then OK again.

Alternately, a more thorough Disk Cleanup utility can be downloaded:
http://downloads.stevengould.org/cleanup/CleanUp40.exe

Now that you are clean, please follow these steps in order to keep your computer safe and secure:

How did I get infected?, With steps so it does not happen again!
