I've been battling the Vundo virus, I think. I've tried SuperAntiSpyware, AVG, Spybot, Vundofix, Malwarebytes and Ad-Aware. I also have McAfee Security Centre as my regular anti-virus program which never even alerted me that I even had a virus to begin with. At first internet windows were opening without a prompt so I ran some antispyware and antivirus programs and now it's not happening anymore but when I run Malwarebytes this: -> Registry Keys Infected:
HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\CLSID\{ec43e3fd-5c60-46a6-97d7-e0b85dbdd6c4} (Trojan.BHO) still shows up. Also, when I run SUPERAntiSpyware it says Adware. Vundo Variant. Both programs say that reboot is needed for deletion, so I do that, but when I run the programs again, the virus is still there. I've tried removal in Safe Mode, without Internet connection, as an Administrator.. basically tried every way I can think of. I've read through some other threads on here with similar virus problems and followed those steps but haven't been successful. Oh, I also did some reading and read that this virus comes from old Java updates, so I updated to the newest version and deleted the old ones too.

I don't know if this helps, but this is my computer:

Microsoft Windows XP
Home Edition
Version 2002
Service Pack 3

Dell Inspiron 530
Intel ® Core™2 Quad CPU
Q6600 @ 2.40GHz

Hello Nini27  Welcome to the BC HijackThis Log and Analysis forum . I will be assisting you from here on out and will need some time to look over your logs.

I ask that you refrain from running tools other than those we suggest to you while we are cleaning up your computer. The reason for this is so we know what is going on with the machine at any time. Some programs can interfere with others and hamper the recovery process.

In the upper right hand corner of the topic you will see a button called Options. If you click on this in the drop-down menu you can choose Track this topic. By doing this and then choosing Immediate E-Mail notification and then clicking on Proceed you will be advised when we respond the your topic and facilitate the cleaning of your machine.

After 5 days if a topic is not replied to we assume it has been abandoned and it is closed.

I need for you to post the log from MalwareBytes Anti-Malware. You can access the log by launching the program and selecting Logs tab. The log that we need which is the latest would the one on the bottom. No need for an attachment, just post it in the window.

Thanks,

Hi again,

One or more of the identified infections is a backdoor trojan. This allows hackers to remotely control your computer, steal critical system information and download and execute files.

I would counsel you to disconnect this PC from the Internet immediately. If you do any banking or other financial transactions on the PC or if it should contain any other sensitive information, please get to a known clean computer and change all passwords where applicable, and it would be wise to contact those same financial institutions to apprise them of your situation.

Though the trojan has been identified and can be killed, because of it's backdoor functionality, your PC is very likely compromised and there is no way to be sure your computer can ever again be trusted. Many experts in the security community believe that once infected with this type of trojan, the best course of action would be a reformat and reinstall of the OS. Please read these for more information:

How Do I Handle Possible Identify Theft, Internet Fraud and CC Fraud?
When Should I Format, How Should I Reinstall

We can still clean this machine but I can't guarantee that it will be 100% secure afterwards.

For the time being I will proceed on the assumption you wish to clean up your computer. If you do not and would rather reformat or reinstall let me know in your next reply.

Please download ATF Cleaner by Atribune & save it to your desktop.
  • Double-click ATF-Cleaner.exe to run the program.
  • Under Main "Select Files to Delete" choose: Select All.
  • Click the Empty Selected button.
  • If you use Firefox browser click Firefox at the top and choose: Select All
  • Click the Empty Selected button.
If you would like to keep your saved passwords, please click No at the prompt.
  • If you use Opera browser click Opera at the top and choose: Select All
  • Click the Empty Selected button.
If you would like to keep your saved passwords, please click No at the prompt.
  • Click Exit on the Main menu to close the program.
Note: On Vista, "Windows Temp" is disabled. To empty "Windows Temp" ATF-Cleaner must be "Run as an Administrator".

I see that you have downloaded ComboFix. The instructions below are with the understanding that it is on your Desktop as the picture shows. If not let me know and we will go from there.

1. Close any open browsers.

2. Close/disable all anti virus and anti malware programs including TeaTimer if you have it so they do not interfere with the running of ComboFix. Instructions for doing so are located here

3. Open notepad and copy/paste the text in the quotebox below into it:

File::
C:\Documents and Settings\Nicole\My Documents\Downloads\Sims 2 Complete (August 2008) -Lost\The Sims 2 - (17) IKEA Home Stuff\The.Sims.2.IKEA.Home.Stuff-SpyXenoX.iso
C:\Documents and Settings\Nicole\My Documents\Incomplete\T-3545425-cowboys from hell pantera.mp3
C:\Documents and Settings\Nicole\My Documents\Incomplete\T-4542054-bleep determined mudvayne MTV.mp3
Registry::
[-HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\CLSID\{ec43e3fd-5c60-46a6-97d7-e0b85dbdd6c4]

Save this as CFScript.txt, in the same location as ComboFix.exe

Posted Image

Refering to the picture above, drag CFScript into ComboFix.exe

When finished, it shall produce a log for you at C:\ComboFix.txt which I will require in your next reply.

Run MalwareBytes once again making sure you do a full scan. Post the log it produces in your next reply along with the one from ComboFix.txt.

I would like to keep my computer without reformatting. If I were to clean this machine and keep it disconnected from the internet, the computer would be fine, correct? I would just like to not lose all my computer programs and pictures. Having an internet connection on this computer isn't that important.

That said, here are the logs:

I am not ignoring your question, but let's do some more cleaning and then I can more adequately address what you asked. Of course you don't want to have any infected computer connected to other clean ones.

  • Open a new notepad window (Start>All Programs>Accessories>Notepad)
  • Copy & paste the contents of the following codebox into the notepad window
    swreg.exe acl HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\CLSID\{ec43e3fd-5c60-46a6-97d7-e0b85dbdd6c4} > permlog.txt
    notepad.exe permlog.txt
    del permlog.txt
  • Click File > Save as
  • In the box labelled File name copy and paste look.bat
  • Change Save as type to All Files
  • Save it to your desktop
  • Close the notepad window
  • Double click on look.bat
  • Once it has finished, a notepad window should open. Copy and paste the contents of that notepad window as a reply to this topic.

I am going to leave you with some suggestions on how to keep from becoming reinfected whether it be on this machine or another. Keep in mind that I don't know exactly what will be on your computer when it comes back from the shop so some of these may apply and some may not but it will definitely be in your favor to use as many as possible.

Good luck in the future.

Below are some steps to follow in order to dramatically lower the chances of reinfection
You may have already implemented some of the steps below, however you should follow any steps that you have not already implemented
    • Turn System Restore off
    • On the Desktop, right click on the My Computer icon.
    • Click Properties.
    • Click the System Restore tab.
    • Check Turn off System Restore.
    • Click Apply, and then click OK.
    Restart
    • Turn System Restore on
    • On the Desktop, right click on the My Computer icon.
    • Click Properties.
    • Click the System Restore tab.
    • Uncheck *Turn off System Restore*.
    • Click Apply, and then click OK.
Note: only do this once, and not on a regular basis
  • Download and install an antivirus program, and make sure that you keep it updated
New viruses come out every minute, so it is essential that you have the latest signatures for your antivirus program to provide you with the best possible protection from malicious software
Two good antivirus programs free for non-commercial home use are Avast! and Antivir
Two good paid for antivirus programs are NOD32 and Bitdefender
Note: You should only have one antivirus installed at a time. Having more than one antivirus program installed at once is likely to cause conflicts and may well decrease your overall protection as well as impairing the performance of your PC.
  • Install and use a firewall with outbound protection
While the firewall built into Windows XP is adequate to protect you from incoming attacks, it will not be much help in alerting you to programs already on your PC attempting to connect to remote servers
I therefore strongly recommend that you install one of the following free firewalls: Comodo Firewall or Zonealarm
See Bleepingcomputer's excellent tutorial to help using and understanding a firewall here
Note: You should only have one firewall installed at a time. Having more than one antivirus program installed at once is likely to cause conflicts and may well decrease your overall protection as well as seriously impairing the performance of your PC.
  • Make sure you install all the security updates for Windows, Internet explorer & Microsoft Office
Whenever a security problem in its software is found, Microsoft will usually create a patch for it to that after the patch is installed, attackers can't use the vulnerability to install malicious software on your PC, so keeping up with these patches will help to prevent malicious software being installed on your PC
Go here to check for & install updates to Microsoft applications
Note: The update process uses activex, so you will need to use internet explorer for it, and allow the activex control that it wants to install
  • Keep your non-Microsoft applications updated as well
Microsoft isn't the only company whose products can contain security vulnerabilities, to check for other vulnerable programs running on your PC that are in need of an update, you can use the Secunia Software Inspector - I suggest that you run it at least once a month
  • Make Internet Explorer more secure
    Click Start > Run
    Type Inetcpl.cpl & click OK
    Click on the Security tab
Click Reset all zones to default level
Make sure the Internet Zone is selected & Click Custom level
In the ActiveX section, set the first two options ("Download signed and unsigned ActiveX controls) to "Prompt", and ("Initialize and Script ActiveX controls not marked as safe") to "Disable".
Next Click OK, then Apply button and then OK to exit the Internet Properties page.
  • Install SpywareBlaster & make sure to update it regularly
SpywareBlaster sets killbits in the registry to prevent known malicious activex controls from installing themselves on your computer.
If you don't know what activex controls are, see here
You can download SpywareBlaster from here
  • Install and use Spybot Search & Destroy
    Instructions are located here
Make sure you update, reimmunize & scan regularly
  • Make use of the HOSTS file included with Spybot Search & Destroy
Every version of windows includes a hosts file as part of them. A hosts file is a bit like a phone book, it points to the actual numeric address (i.e. the IP address) from the human friendly name of a website. This feature can be used to block malicious websites
Spybot Search & Destroy has a good HOSTS file built in, to enable the HOSTS file in Spybot Search & Destroy
    • Run Spybot Search & Destroy
    • Click on Mode, and then place a tick next to Advanced mode
    • Click Yes
    • In the left hand pane of Spybot Search & Destroy, click on Tools, and then on Hosts File
    • Click on Add Spybot-S&D hosts list
Note: On some PCs, having a custom HOSTS file installed can cause a significant slowdown. Following these instructions should resolve the issue
    • Click Start > Run
    • Type services.msc & click OK
    • In the list, find the service called DNS Client & double click on it.
    • On the dropdown box, change the setting from automatic to manual.
    • Click OK & then close the Services window
For a more detailed explanation of the HOSTS file, click here
  • Install a-squared Free & update and scan with it regularly
a-squared free is a product from Emsi Software provided free for private use that can detect and remove a variety of malicious software. You can get it here
Note: If you have a dialup internet connection, you may also like to install a-squared Anti-Dialer which provides some real time protection against premium rate dialers
  • Finally I am trying to make one point very clear. It is absolutely essential to keep all of your security programs up to date

Thanks,
