Posted 11 December 2008 - 10:05 PM

My computer has recently become significantly slower. In the last couple of days I saw entries in the browser history for sites I had not visited. Also I have been getting some strange popups (had ron/ronx.php in the URL). I ran combofix and it returned the log below. Any help analyzing it is appreciated.

Hi Fion,

Welcome to BC HijackThis forum and sorry for the delay. I am farbar. I am going to assist you with your problem.

Please refrain from making any changes to your system (updating Windows, installing applications, removing files, etc.) from now on as it might prolong handling your log and make the job for both of us more difficult.

I see no apparent sign of infection on your computer. We are going to run some tools to have a closer look at it.
  • Tell me if you have run any other tools and post the logs if you have them. Please give a description about the current condition of your computer and the problem you are facing.

  • Please do a scan with Kaspersky Online Scanner

Click on the Accept button and install any components it needs.
    • The program will install and then begin downloading the latest definition files.
    • After the files have been downloaded on the left side of the page in the Scan section select My Computer
    • This will start the program and scan your system.
    • The scan will take a while, so be patient and let it run.
    • Once the scan is complete, click on View scan report
    • Now, click on the Save Report as button.
    • Save the file to your desktop.
    • Copy and paste that information in your next post.
  • We need to see some information about what is happening in your machine. Please perform the following scan:
  • Double click on the DDS icon, allow it to run.
  • A small box will open, with an explanation about the tool. No input is needed, the scan is running.
  • Notepad will open with the results. Save the result to a notepad text file and click yes to the Optional_Scan
  • Save the scan result and copy and paste both logs to your replay.
Please note: If the scanner fails to run. Disconnect from the internet and disable all antivirus protection. Run the scan, enable your antivirus and reconnect to the internet. Information on antivirus control HERE

Kaspersky sees no active infection, neither I. Lets do a last check up.
  • As you have might noticed there are either infected or suspicious e-mails in the following Outlook Express folders:

    Deleted Items
    Inbox
    pharmareach
    SPAM FOLDER
    suggestions

The e-mails with an attachment or those containing a link should be cleaned. Make sure you don't open the attachments or click on the link in the e-mails. The best option is to delete all the e-mails in those folders. If you want to keep some e-mails we might be able to single out the infected e-mails but we should run Kaspersky once more. Let me know what you want to do. The following folders look the back up of the same folders on the I partition.

    I:\EMAIL FROM DELL\Deleted Items.dbx
    I:\EMAIL FROM DELL\Inbox.dbx
    I:\EMAIL FROM DELL\SPAM FOLDER.dbx
    I:\EMAIL FROM DELL\suggestions.dbx

  • Go to start > Run copy/paste the following line in the run box and click OK.

    sc delete 0182911228943854mcinstcleanup

Ok, I have performed all of the steps except removing the email files. I currently only use the outlook to keep old emails that I may need. I don't think I will ever need the infected emails though, so I will likely delete them.

You are welcome.
  • Go to start > run and copy and paste or type next command in the field then hit enter:

    ComboFix /u

Note: There's a space between Combofix and /

This will uninstall Combofix, delete its related folders and files, reset your clock settings, hide file extensions, hide the system/hidden files and resets System Restore again.

  • Remove RSIT and its folder (C:\rsit). Delete also any tool or fix we have used from your desktop.

  • The only thing remains is that I see many instances of Internet Explorer running on the log. Either you run rsit while using Internet Explorer or there is something here that needs our attention. If you run rsit while IE was running it is no problem. Otherwise close all open application make and post a fresh Hijackthis log.

Thanks for all of your help. I have deleted combofix and RSIT and the other tools we used. I did have a number of instances of IE up when I ran hijackthis -- so that should not be problem.

Thanks again.
