Hello emma_wonders and welcome to the BC forums. After reviewing your log I see a few items that require our attention. Please print these directions and then proceed with the following steps in order.

Step #1

Download CCleaner and install it but do not run it yet.

Step #2

Start HijackThis and click the Scan button to perform a scan. Look for the following items and click in the checkbox in front of each item to select it:R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer,SearchURL = http://www.superwebsearch.com/ie/
R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Bar = http://www.superwebsearch.com/ie/
R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Page = http://www.superwebsearch.com/ie/
R1 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Bar = http://red.clientapps.yahoo.com/customize/...rch/search.html
R0 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Start Page = http://red.clientapps.yahoo.com/customize/...://my.yahoo.com
R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Search,SearchAssistant = http://www.superwebsearch.com/ie/
R0 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Search,SearchAssistant = http://www.superwebsearch.com/ie/
O2 - BHO: (no name) - {549B5CA7-4A86-11D7-A4DF-000874180BB3} - (no file)
O2 - BHO: (no name) - {FDD3B846-8D59-4ffb-8758-209B6AD74ACC} - (no file)
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [WeatherOnTray] C:\Program Files\Hotbar\bin\4.4.5.0\WeatherOnTray.exe
O9 - Extra button: (no name) - {CD67F990-D8E9-11d2-98FE-00C0F0318AFE} - (no file)
O16 - DPF: {56336BCB-3D8A-11D6-A00B-0050DA18DE71} (RdxIE Class) - http://software-dl.real.com/0801914c0c3585...ip/RdxIE601.cab

Now close ALL open windows except HijackThis and click the Fix Checked button to finish the repair.

Step #3

We need to make sure all hidden files are showing so please:
  • Click Start.
  • Open My Computer.
  • Select the Tools menu and click Folder Options.
  • Select the View tab.
  • Under the Hidden files and folders heading select Show hidden files and folders.
  • Uncheck the Hide file extensions for known types option.
  • Uncheck the Hide protected operating system files (recommended) option.
  • Click Yes to confirm.
  • Click OK.
Find the following files/folders and delete them (don't worry if they are already gone):C:\Program Files\Hotbar\ <--folder
Note: If you receive any error messages while trying to delete any of the above files/folders then reboot into Safe Mode and try to delete them again. See the instructions below on how to boot into Safe Mode.

If needed, start in Safe Mode Using the F8 method:
  • Restart the computer in Safe Mode.
  • As soon as BIOS is loaded begin tapping the F8 key until the Advanced Options menu appears.
  • Use the arrow keys to select the Safe Mode menu item.
  • Press the Enter key.
If you rebooted into Safe Mode just stay in Safe Mode until I tell you to reboot normally.

Step #4

Start CCleaner and click on the Run Cleaner button in the lower right-hand corner. When it is finished close CCleaner.

Step #5

OK. Reboot your computer normally, start HijackThis and perform a new scan. Use the Add Reply button to post your new log file back here along with details of any problems you encountered performing the above steps and I will review it when it comes in.

OT
I do not respond to PM's requesting help. That's what the forums are here for. Please use them so that others may benefit from your questions and the responses you receive.

Hi emma_wonders. Looks better. We still hve 1 left over so let's clean that up.

Start HijackThis and click the Scan button to perform a scan. Look for the following items and click in the checkbox in front of each item to select it:O2 - BHO: (no name) - {549B5CA7-4A86-11D7-A4DF-000874180BB3} - (no file)
Now close ALL open windows except HijackThis and click the Fix Checked button to finish the repair.

Your log is clean. There are no more sign's of viruses or malware at this time. Good job!

Can you give me a few more details regarding what is happening when you say you get a 'not responding' message. What programs are open? What program do you get the message from? What is the exact message that you get? Is this only when connected to the internet or while not connected to the internet or either?

If this problem is not related to malware we have some really good people in the XP forum that can help out with operating system issues so I'll review the information and we can go from there.

Cheers.

thanks OT
noww.....i'm scared. i just restarted my computer and it did the bluescreen: windows won't open blah blah..so if this is the first time you see this restart, if its not than do safemode
i restarted it and then it said, yup same thing again, windows encountered a problem...can't do it, have to open it up in safe mode so here i am.

the don't respond, seems to be happening to me ALL the time.
took a long time to start up whenever i would turn it on-previous my hijack experience w/ you...
i think it was mainly : when i was online and then it would freeze up after a few minutes, or after a couple of hourse, randomly, then my real rhapsody would follow suit,
then microsoft would ask me if i'd like to report the error for the betterment of humankind
i do so
then i look at the explanation
and its always the same and says: you've experienced an application hang, there is little or nothing you can do to avoid this blah blah
so i've experience so much application hang i have learned how to FLY
geez.
my computer is sick!
so now i'm grounded, i'm in safe mode.
what should i do?

Hi emma_wonders. Since there is nothing visible let's look for anything that might be hiding. If that shows nothing then it could be a case of a corrupted system. Please do the folowing:

Download PFind.zip and unzip the contents to its own permanent folder.

Important! Reboot in SAFE MODE !!

Start in Safe Mode Using the F8 method:
  • Restart the computer in Safe Mode.
  • As soon as the BIOS is loaded begin tapping the F8 key until the Advanced Options menu appears.
  • Use the arrow keys to select the Safe Mode menu item.
  • Press the Enter key.
Locate the pfind.bat file and double-click it to run it. It will start scanning your computer and could take a little while so be patient. When the DOS window closes, reboot back to normal mode.

Post the contents of C:\pfind.txt back here and I will review it when it comes in.

Hey OT, i had to use safe mode and use the restore point function to get this done..so my computer is back to where it was before any removal of items from your suggestions..i wouldn't have been able to connect to the net and download that zip file...sooo i believe this is the result of the scan from the pfind file..
thank you!

Hi emma_wonders. Did you have Norton anti-virus on this computer at one time? Idon't see anything out of the ordinary in the scan either.

Why was a system restore needed? Were you getting any errors that required it?

Post a new HijackThis log and let's see what's in it now.

Cheers.

hey oldtimer, again, thanks for taking the time to review my computer innards..
i never had norton antivirus, instead i have mcafee security suite. i don't know if its a stellar product but its what i have...so i believe this hijack log should reflect the original state of my laptop before we started removing things. i should note: that i did remove a couple of 'small' things about a month ago

uhh they seemed to be nothing i didn't remove much maybe one or two things, anyway
as i told you in my other post :
i removed the items you pointed out, after the second round of removing items, i also ran the 'issues' with hijack and i guess i deleted everything it declared an issue (now that is undone) and i will never do that again, sorry.
so my laptop was just getting into not responding mode shortly after i did all that, i would have my internet explorer up and then a few seconds in my computer would be useless, didn't recieve any error messages. when i restarted my computer i then recieved that initial..last time windows didn't start correctly, if you've seen an error restart in safemode, if you've not seen an error go ahead and restart, i restarted and it was the blue screen.
and wallah, i had to restore b/c i didn't know what to do, i had restarted to safemode but i had to download that pfind file to do what you asked.
i hope i'm making sense.

Hi emma_wonders. Ok, let's see if we can clear this up. Please print these directions and then proceed with the following steps in order.

Step #1

Download Cwshredder.exe and save it to a folder of its own. Start the program and click on the Check for Update button. If an update is available then download and install it. Close the program (do not run it yet).

Download CCleaner and install it but do not run it yet.

Download the Symantec Adware.Hotbar Removal Tool to your desktop and then close ALL open windows. Locate the FxHotbar.exe file on your desktop and double-click on it to start it. Follow the prompts to run it.

Step #2

Restart in Safe Mode
  • Restart the computer.
  • As soon as the BIOS is loaded begin tapping the F8 key until the boot menu appears.
  • Use the arrow keys to select the Safe Mode menu item.
  • Press the Enter key.
Step #3

Start HijackThis and click the Scan button to perform a scan. Look for the following items and click in the checkbox in front of each item to select it:R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer,SearchURL = http://www.superwebsearch.com/ie/
R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Bar = http://www.superwebsearch.com/ie/
R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Page = http://www.superwebsearch.com/ie/
R1 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Bar = http://red.clientapps.yahoo.com/customize/...rch/search.html
R0 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Start Page = http://red.clientapps.yahoo.com/customize/...://my.yahoo.com
R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Search,SearchAssistant = http://www.superwebsearch.com/ie/
R0 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Search,SearchAssistant = http://www.superwebsearch.com/ie/
O2 - BHO: (no name) - {549B5CA7-4A86-11D7-A4DF-000874180BB3} - (no file)
O2 - BHO: (no name) - {FDD3B846-8D59-4ffb-8758-209B6AD74ACC} - (no file)
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [WeatherOnTray] C:\Program Files\Hotbar\bin\4.4.5.0\WeatherOnTray.exe
O9 - Extra button: (no name) - {CD67F990-D8E9-11d2-98FE-00C0F0318AFE} - (no file)
O16 - DPF: {56336BCB-3D8A-11D6-A00B-0050DA18DE71} (RdxIE Class) - http://software-dl.real.com/0801914c0c3585...ip/RdxIE601.cab

Now close ALL open windows except HijackThis and click the Fix Checked button to finish the repair.

Step #4

Step #5

Start CCleaner and click on the Run Cleaner button in the lower right-hand corner. When it is finished close CCleaner.

Step #6

Run CWShredder
  • Double-click on CWShredder.exe.
  • Click "Fix ->" and click "OK" at the prompt.
  • CWShredder will scan and clean your system of CWS files.
  • Click "Next->" and then "Exit".
Step #7

Reboot normally and run at least 2 of the following on-line virus scans:Trend Micro Housecall
BitDefender On-Line Virus Scan
Panda ActiveScan
eTrust Antivirus Web Scanner
Make sure that you choose "fix" or "clean".

Step #8

AdAware SE

Download, install, update, configure and run a scan with Ad-aware SE:
  • Download and Install AdAware SE Personal, keeping the default options. However, some of the settings will need to be changed before your first scan.
  • Close ALL windows except Ad-Aware SE.
  • Click on the‘world’ icon at the top right of the Ad-Aware SE window and let AdAware SE update the reference list for the adware and malware.
  • Once the update is finished click on the ‘Gear’ icon (second from the left at the top of the window) to access the preferences/settings window:
    • In the ‘General’ window make sure the following are selected in green:
      • Under Safety:
        • Automatically save log-file
      • Automatically quarantine objects prior to removal
      • Safe Mode (always request confirmation)
    • Under Definitions:
      • Prompt to update outdated definitions - set the number of days
  • Click on the ‘Scanning’ button on the left and select in green:
    • Under Driver, Folders & Files:
      • Scan Within Archives
    • Under Select drives & folders to scan:
      • choose all hard drives
    • Under Memory & Registry: all green
      • Scan Active Processes
      • Scan Registry
      • Deep Scan Registry
      • Scan my IE favorites for banned URL’s
      • Scan my Hosts file
  • Click on the ‘Advanced’ button on the left and select in green:
    • Under Shell Integration:
      • Move deleted files to recycle bin
    • Under Logfile Detail Level: all green
      • include addtional object information
      • DESELECT - include negligible objects information
      • include environment information
    • Under Alternate Data Streams:
      • Don't log streams smaller than 0 bytes
      • Don't log ADS with the following names: CA_INOCULATEIT
  • Click the ‘Tweak’ button and select in green:
    • Under ‘Scanning Engine’:
      • Unload recognized processes during scanning
      • Scan registry for all users instead of current user only
    • Under ‘Cleaning Engine’:
      • Let Windows remove files in use at next reboot
    • Under Log Files:
      • Include basic Ad-aware SE settings in logfile
      • Include additional Ad-aware SE settings in logfile
      • Please do not check: Include Module list in logfile
  • Click on ‘Proceed’ to save the settings.
  • Click ‘Start’
  • Choose 'Perform Full System Scan'
  • DESELECT "Search for negligible risk entries", as negligible risk entries (MRU's) are not considered to be a threat.
  • Click ‘Next’ and Ad-Aware SE will scan your hard drive(s) with the options you have selected and clean automatically.
  • If Ad-Aware SE finds bad entries, you will receive a list of what it found in the window
  • Save the log file when it asks and then click ‘Finish’
  • REBOOT to complete the removal of what Ad-Aware SE found.
Step #9

OK. Reboot your computer normally, start HijackThis and perform a new scan. Use the Add Reply button to post your new log file back here along with details of any problems you encountered performing the above steps and I will review it when it comes in.

ok after all of that..here's my current hijack..the scanning programs didn't pick up anything at all, including fixbar...the only one that found anything was adaware se personal- 6 critical objects which were all data miners...tracking cookies, i have never deleted those b/c the information provided with those is always 'low risk' so i didn't know they would clog my computer up like this!

Hi emma_wonders. 1 item left and your log is clean! How are things running? any problems?

Start HijackThis and click the Scan button to perform a scan. Look for the following items and click in the checkbox in front of each item to select it:R0 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Start Page = http://red.clientapps.yahoo.com/customize/...://my.yahoo.com
Now close ALL open windows except HijackThis and click the Fix Checked button to finish the repair and reboot your computer.

We have a couple of last steps to perform and then you're all set.

First, let's reset your hidden/system files and folders. System files are hidden for a reason and we don't want to have them openly available and susceptible to accidental deletion.* Click Start.
* Open My Computer.
* Select the Tools menu and click Folder Options.
* Select the View tab.
* Under the Hidden files and folders heading UNSELECT Show hidden files and folders.
* CHECK the Hide protected operating system files (recommended) option.
* Click Yes to confirm.
* Click OK.
Next, let's clean your restore points and set a new one:

Reset and Re-enable your System Restore to remove infected files that have been backed up by Windows. The files in System Restore are protected to prevent any programs from changing those files. This is the only way to clean these files: (You will lose all previous restore points which are likely to be infected)1. Turn off System Restore. On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
Check Turn off System Restore.
Click Apply, and then click OK.
2. Restart your computer.

3. Turn ON System Restore. On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
UN-Check Turn off System Restore.
Click Apply, and then click OK.
[/list]System Restore will now be active again.

Now that you are clean, to help protect your computer in the future I recommend that you get the following free programs:
  • SpywareBlaster to help prevent spyware from installing in the first place.
  • SpywareGuard to catch and block spyware before it can execute.
  • IESpy-Ad to block access to malicious websites so you cannot be redirected to them from an infected site or email.
You should also have a good firewall and a good antivirus application like the ones you are currently using. It is critical to have both a firewall and antivirus to protect your system and to keep them updated.

To keep your operating system up to date visit monthly. And to keep your system clean run these free malware scanners
weekly, and be aware of what emails you open and websites you visit.

To learn more about how to protect yourself while on the internet read this article by Tony Klien: So how did I get infected in the first place?

Have a safe and happy computing day!
