Hard Drive Keeps Filling Up

Hi All,

My hard drive keeps filling up and I'm unsure why. I keep deleting unused files (as well as from the Recycle Bin) and running Windows Disk Cleanup. However the drive appears to keep running low on disk space. While I have been downloading some data, I know this does not equate to the additional amount of space the disk registers as "used space".

I have run the following malware scanners with the latest definitions:
AVG Anti-Virus Free, Ad Aware 2007, Spybot Search & Destroy, Windows Defender.
All scanners have only returned Tracking Cookies (if anything) which I have then removed.

I have also run a full Check Disk and Disk Defrag (although I only had 4% space when run) neither of which helped.

Windows Disk Management reports the disk is partitioned. The first partition being a 2GB - Healthy (EISA Confguration) - 100% free. The other partition is System C: 109.78 GB NTFS - Healthy (System, Boot, Page File, Active, Crash Dump, Primary Partition) - 6% free [At time of writing].
I assume this partition configuration was setup on purchase of the laptop, but I'm unsure why it has a 2GB empty partition?

I have run "Disk Analysis" as part of a Tune-Up package called "Glary Utilities".
I initially found two directories containing 15GB of data each:
C:\Users\All Users\Microsoft\Search\Data\Applications\Windows\Projects\SystemIndex\Indexer\CiFiles
These directories appear to be identical. The largest files 00010001.ci and 00010014.ci are 5.8GB and 4.0GB respectively.

I have now monitored the above two folders over half the day and found they have now grown to 17.1GB each.
While I am under the impression this folder is used for Search Indexing I would assume these folders would not normally be this large. I would also certainly assume they wouldn’t normally grow this quickly. I’m unsure why the folders are duplicated?

The only other unusual issue with my laptop I have noticed is that it will sometimes freeze with and odd “cloud / hazy” effect developing over the screen. The computer will become non-responsive to keyboard/ mouse and will need to be powered off by holding in the power button.
This issue began about 6 months ago and was occurring quite frequently. At the time the resolution I had found was to run Check Disk which I believe fixed a bad cluster.
The issue did not reoccur for about 4 months. In the past 2months it has reoccurred twice. I have attempted to run Check Disk again but it has not picked up any corrupted clusters to fix.
I had been unable to pick up any pattern on the occurrences or been able to find any help on the internet for this particular issue.
I’m unsure whether this freezing issue would be related to the HDD space problem, but thought I mention it to give some more background information.

I just ran Kapersky Online Scanner which gave the below results. Should I just delete the files it returned as malware?

RSIT/Hijack This is posted below. Also if anyone can see from the results how I could tune up my system that would be excellent.

The computer is a laptop Fujitsu Siemens Esprimo Mobile v5545. Intel Centrino (Core 2 Duo 1.8GHz)
Billed as a 120GB HDD but reported as 111.79GB in Disk Management.

If anyone can shed some light on any of my queries I would be greatly appreciative.

Kind Regards,

Hello and welcome to Bleeping Computer

We apologize for the delay in responding to your request for help. Here at Bleeping Computer we get overwhelmed at times, and we are trying our best to keep up. Please note that your topic was not intentionally overlooked. Our mission is to help everyone in need, but sometimes it takes just a little longer to get to every request for help.

If you have since resolved the original problem you were having, we would appreciate you letting us know. If not please perform the following steps below so we can have a look at the current condition of your machine. If you have not done so, include a description of your problem, along with any steps you may have performed so far.

Upon completing the steps below a staff member will review and take the steps necessary with you to get your machine back in working order clean and free of malware.

Thanks and again sorry for the delay.

We need to see some information about what is happening in your machine. Please perform the following scan:
  • Download DDS by sUBs from one of the following links. Save it to your desktop.
  • Double click on the DDS icon, allow it to run.
  • A small box will open, with an explaination about the tool. No input is needed, the scan is running.
  • Notepad will open with the results, click no to the Optional_Scan
  • Follow the instructions that pop up for posting the results.
  • Close the program window, and delete the program from your desktop.
Please note: You may have to disable any script protection running if the scan fails to run. After downloading the tool, disconnect from the internet and disable all antivirus protection. Run the scan, enable your A/V and reconnect to the internet. Information on A/V control HERE

Please Hold on it may take us a day or so to get back with you.

The only easy day was yesterday.

...some do, some don't; some will, some won't (WR)
