iexplore in tasklist at bootup - but no broswer is open

I am using Win XP Pro, and IE6 as my browser.

Begininng this morning my hard drive was being hit hard immediately after bootup.

Opening a browser, I noticed that all my cookies had been reset (or had vanished). After closing the browser, I finally noticed that there was an iexplore in my Tasklist even though no browser was open at the time. Several reboots later, it is always there immediately after bootup even though no browser is open nor has been opened.

Task Manager allows me to delete the instance of iexplore, and the bogus iexplore does not return until the next reboot.

I ran some Adware/Spyware products, and a Norton AV scan.

Norton found nothing. Ad-Aware, SuperAntiSpyware and SpyBot Search & Destroy found registry entries pertaining to a possible trojan. Those registry entries were removed by the software. I even tried System Restore several times, with several different restore points. System Restore claimed each time that it could not restore to any point I selected. Using MSCONFIG, I checked my Startup and Services to see if anything had changed there - it had not. IE is not now and never has been set to run at startup.

I even ran SFC, which I had never heard of but apparently is supposed to restore system files that have becoe corrupt. I did that because one of the traits of the alleged trojan is supposed to be that it messes with user32.dll.

Here is my current HijackThis log. Aside from the F2 entry, the entries are mostly recognizable to me as being valid (or so I believe).

We need to see some information about what is happening in your machine. Please perform the following scan:
  • Download DDS by sUBs from one of the following links. Save it to your desktop.
  • Double click on the DDS icon, allow it to run.
  • A small box will open, with an explaination about the tool. No input is needed, the scan is running.
  • Notepad will open with the results, click no to the Optional_Scan
  • Follow the instructions that pop up for posting the results.
  • Close the program window, and delete the program from your desktop.
Please note: You may have to disable any script protection running if the scan fails to run. After downloading the tool, disconnect from the internet and disable all antivirus protection. Run the scan, enable your A/V and reconnect to the internet. Information on A/V control HERE
