Symptom of the problem is a red circle with a white cross appearing in the system tray with pop up message "Warning! Security report Your computer is infected! It is recommended to start spyware clearner tool." Clicking on the red circle opens IE to http://real-av.org/?code=8

Any help appreciated. Thanks. GRM01

Hello GRM01,

Posted Image

Please download Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware from one of these places:
http://www.majorgeeks.com/Malwarebytes_Ant...ware_d5756.html
http://www.besttechie.net/mbam/mbam-setup.exe

Double Click mbam-setup.exe to install the application.

* Make sure a checkmark is placed next to Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware, then click Finish.
* If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
* Once the program has loaded, select "Perform Quick Scan", then click Scan.
* The scan may take some time to finish,so please be patient.
* When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
* Make sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
* When disinfection is completed, a log will open in Notepad and you may be prompted to Restart.(See Extra Note)
* The log is automatically saved by MBAM and can be viewed by clicking the Logs tab in MBAM.
* Copy&Paste the entire report in your next reply along with a fresh HijackThis log.

Extra Note:
If MBAM encounters a file that is difficult to remove, you will be presented with 1 of 2 prompts, click OK to either and let MBAM proceed with the disinfection process,if asked to restart the computer, please do so immediately.

Thanks,
tea

Hi and thanks for your reply.

It took 3 attempts to install Malwarebytes'. Got a 'floating point' error - but the program installed OK on the 3rd attempt.

I'm unable to connect to the internet on the PC with the problem at present - which may be related to the overall problem. So I'm running the scan without the latest Malwarebytes updates.

I have installed Malwarebytes Ok on the PC I'm logging this all through - so I could transfer the latest signature files over if you advise how pls.

Thanks,

GRM01

Hello,

So it wants to play tough huh? Let's hit it with this:

This tool is not a toy. If used the wrong way you could trash your computer. Please use only under direction of a Helper. If you decide to do so anyway, please do not blame me or ComboFix.

1. Download this file - combofix.exe
http://download.bleepingcomputer.com/sUBs/ComboFix.exe
http://www.forospyware.com/sUBs/ComboFix.exe
http://subs.geekstogo.com/ComboFix.exe
2. Double click combofix.exe & follow the prompts.
3. When finished, it will produce a log for you. Post that log in your next reply please, along with a new HijackThis log.

Note:
Do not mouseclick combofix's window while it's running. That may cause it to stall.

Thanks,
tea
Please make a donation so I can keep helping people just like you.
Every little bit helps! :)
You can even use your credit card! Thank you!

Thanks Again !

Ran combofix OK. Log below - but I was not able to let it run with Windows Recovery - as I could not get to the internet still - and still cannot on the problem machine. Malwarebytes still reports the 2 Trojan's after running combofix.

Hello,

I'd like you to perform an online virus scan with Kaspersky Online Virus Scanner

Navigate (using Internet Explorer only, other browsers won't work) to the following site: http://www.kaspersky.com/virusscanner

Click the "Kaspersky Online Scanner" button (NOT "Kaspersky File Scanner").

* In the new window that opens, click the "Accept" button to accept the user agreement, install the ActiveX control, and download the program.
* When you get the Windows dialog asking if you want to install this software, click the "Install" button.
* The scanner will download the latest definition files. When the "Update progress" line changes to "Ready" and the "NEXT ->" button lights up with a green arrow, click it.
* Click on the "Scan Settings" button, and in the next window select the "extended" database, and click Ok.
* Under "Please select a target to scan:", click My Computer to start the scan.

When the scan is finished, click the "Save as Text" button, and save the file as kavscan.txt to your Desktop. Close the Kaspersky On-line Scanner window. Post the report in your reply, please.

Thanks,
tea

Hi and thanks again,

I can't navigate to any sites I'm afraid - I get the standard "Unable to display webpage" message. I have checked the IP Properties and all looks OK as follows

IP Address 192.168.15.102
Subnet 255.255.255.0
Default Gateway 192.168.15.1
Preferred DNS 211.29.132.12
ALT DNS 198.142.0.51

The browser always tries to connect to 192.168.0.9

The infected PC is on a network and is visible to the other PC and the Other PC (the one I'm working on) can see it.

I'm thinking userinit.exe is the problem - given one of the lines in the hijackthis log which has 192.168.0.9

Thanks again,

GRM01

Hi,

Sorry about that.....let's see about getting connectivity back:

Click Start>Run> Type in (or copy and paste) ipconfig /flushdns and hit enter. You'll get a confirmation that the flush was successful.

FOR CONNECTION PROBLEMS :
Click on Start, Control Panel, select the Network and Internet Connections category or double click on Network Connections, depending on which View you are using. Then right click on your default connection, usually local area connection for cable and dsl, and left click on properties. Double-click on the Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) item. Write down the settings in case you should need to change them back. Select the radio dial that says Obtain DNS servers automatically.
Press OK twice to get out of the properties screen and reboot if it asks. If it does not prompt you to reboot go ahead and reboot manually.

Let me know how you come out.

Hi,

No change from before - still tries to go to 192.168.0.9 and gets the "Internet Explorer cannot display the webpage" message. Plus the PC was no longer visible to the network.

Try a couple of things here :

First, drop McAfee Firewall and see if you can connect then.

If not, then try this:

Download the HostsXpert Here
http://www.funkytoad.com/download/HostsXpert.zip

Unzip HostsXpert to your desktop

Open up the HostsXpert program.

* Make sure that the "make hosts writable?" button in the upper left corner is enabled.
* Click back up Host files
* then click "Restore MS Hosts File"
* close program

Why do you think userinit is the problem?

Let me know how you come out.

Thanks,
tea

Hi,

Maywarebytes reports the following from it's log posted above - hence a userinit issue.

Registry Data Items Infected:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Winlogon\Userinit (Trojan.Agent) -> Data: c:\windows\system32\userinit.exe -> No action taken.
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Winlogon\Userinit (Trojan.Agent) -> Data: system32\userinit.exe -> No action taken.

The hijackthis entry

R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Internet Settings,ProxyServer = 192.168.0.9:3128

looks suspicious to me. 192.168.0.9 is the address IE tries to go to and fails.

When I launch MS Live
Messenger it cannot connect and reports as follows

IP OK
Default Gateway OK
IE's Offline Settings OK
Hosts file OK
DNS OK
Proxy Server NOT OK
Ports NOT OK

Fix that line with HijackThis, then reboot. Let MBAM clean those, if you haven't already.Did you try the other things? I see it said Hosts were okay, but I'd like to reset them to MS Default to be sure.

Can you get a copy of that file and upload it for analysis to be sure it's infected before we nuke it? If so, do this:

Please go to the following site : http://www.threatexpert.com/submit.aspx

In the "file to submit" area, please click the browse button and navigate to the following file :

c:\windows\system32\userinit.exe[/b]

Check the "I agree" box and when your file is uploaded, click submit.

Please post back with the URL of the page that comes up when it's done analyzing the file.

Thanks,
tea

Hi,

An update - The clean PC I'm on does not use a proxy server - so I removed the proxy server registry settings from the infected PC and it now connects to the web OK.

Am now installing kaspersky online scanner.

Thanks again for all your help so far.

Will let you know what happens with kaspersky.

Hven't tried HostsXpert yet.
