Hi, and thanks in advance. My wife accidentally activated something through Facebook, and now I am having all sorts of troubles. I forgot what the initial messages were, but there were a lot of messages saying that I may be infected (with a new official looking warning symbol in the bottom right corner of the toolbar), and new windows kept popping up. One of the first programs I noticed that had been installed on my computer was TinyProxy.exe. I ran my McAfee virus check and cleaned up what I could. But I still had problems. I downloaded and ran Spybot, and then I was having trouble loading Windows on a restart (which I am still having - I can only load through a safe mode). Then I downloaded and ran Malwarebyte's Anti-Malware. But Windows is still not loading properly, and I suspect that there are still plenty of viruses and malwares present. Some of the ones that had been detected include DeepDive, Fake.SecurityAlert, WildTangent, Win32.BHO.je, and Zlob.Downloader.vdt. Below please find my Hijack This log. Please let me know if you need anything else. Thank you!

Hi,

I see you have Viewpoint installed...
Viewpoint Manager is considered as foistware instead of malware since it is installed without users approval but doesn't spy or do anything "bad". This will change from what we know in 2006 read this article: http://www.clickz.com/news/article.php/3561546
I suggest you remove the program now. Go to Start > Settings > Control Panel > Add/Remove Programs and remove the following programs if present.
  • Viewpoint
  • Viewpoint Manager
  • Viewpoint Media Player
Then, * Please visit this webpage for instructions for downloading and running ComboFix:

http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/combofix/how-to-use-combofix

Post the log from ComboFix when you've accomplished that, along with a new HijackThis log.

In case you lost internet access after performing above instructions:

In IE: Tools Menu -> Internet Options -> Connections Tab ->Lan Settings > uncheck "use a proxy server" or reconfigure the Proxy server again in case you have set it previously.
In Firefox in Tools Menu -> Options... -> Advanced Tab -> Network Tab -> "Settings" under Connection.

Thank you very much for your assistance! I deleted the two Viewpoint files that were present.

When I visit the link for ComboFix, it asks me to print out the instructions for running it. However, it seems that I cannot print anymore. I am running in Safe Mode (the computer locks up when loading normally since I first ran Spybot). Is it normal that I can't run normal Windows after deleting viruses and malware? Will Windows run normally after I complete all your steps (both the current ones and the future ones), or will I need to reinstall it in the future?

When I try to print, it says I need to install a printer (it does not recognize any that used to work). When I try to install a printer, it says that the operation could not be completed because the printer spooler service is not running. Is this normal in safe mode? Is there something I can do to fix it?

If there is no way for me to get the printer back up and running, I will have to wait until Monday to print out the instructions at work. Thanks.

Hi,

Don't worry about the printer. That won't work in safe mode anyway. No need to print the instructions out either, since all you have to do is to download Combofix to your desktop and run it.
Then post the logs in your next reply.

Is it normal that I can't run normal Windows after deleting viruses and malware? Will Windows run normally after I complete all your steps (both the current ones and the future ones), or will I need to reinstall it in the future?

That's because of the malware still present and most probably also McAfee being the cause here. It should be fixed afterwards.

My virus protection software (McAfee) did not have a disable feature in the taskbar icon, but I entered the program and manually disabled all the individual features. I hope this was sufficient.

I ran the ComboFix, and as part of the process, it automatically restarted my computer. Unfortunately, it loaded regular Windows, not safemode, and it locked up near the end of the process. However, I think it might have completed running - it said a logfile was saved, but it did not say anything further and did not automatically close the window (probably because the computer locked up). Anyway, below please find the log:

Hi,

I also noticed that my McAfee is not working properly, now. I'm tryingto restore my protection, ans its not letting me. Do I have to uninstall and reinstall this? Thanks.

This is normal since you are in Windows Safe mode.

But I suggest you temporary uninstall McAfee anyway since it may be the main cause of your lockups. Mcafee is known to be a huge resource hog and known to cause lockups anyway, even on clean computers. You can reinstall McAfee afterwards again, once we are done here, or install another Free Antivirus instead.

But first of all, I see you are running Teatimer.
I suggest you to disable it because it can interfere with the changes you'll make on your system.
When everything is done and your log is clean again, you can enable it again.
If teatimer gives you a warning afterwards that some changes were made, allow this instead of blocking it.
How to disable TeaTimer <== click me for instructions.
After you disabled Teatimer, download ResetTeaTimer.bat to your desktop. (In case you use Firefox, rightclick the link and choose "save as").
Doubleclick ResetTeaTimer.bat and let it run.
This will only take a few seconds.

Then,

To uninstall McAfee - in case the uninstaller doesn't work:

* Download and run the McAfee Consumer Products Removal tool (MCPR.exe).
Running the McAfee Consumer Product Removal tool (MCPR.exe) removes all 2005, 2006, and 2007 versions of McAfee consumer products.
  • McAfee Security Center
  • McAfee VirusScan
  • McAfee Personal Firewall Plus
  • McAfee Privacy Service
  • McAfee SpamKiller
  • McAfee Wireless Network Security
  • McAfee SiteAdvisor
  • McAfee Data Backup
  • McAfee Network Manager
  • McAfee Easy Network
  • McAfee AntiSpyware
Download the removal tool from http://download.mcafee.com/products/licens...atches/MCPR.exe
  • Click Save and save the file to any folder on the computer.
  • Navigate to the folder where the file is saved.
  • Double-click MCPR.exe.
  • Click Run. A Command Line window will be displayed, and then close automatically. Wait for a second Command Line window to be displayed.
Note: Do not double-click MCPR.exe again, you may have to wait up to 1 minute for the next window to appear.
After the second window appears, the program will begin the cleanup.
  • Observe the installation, which could take several minutes. The following message will be displayed in the Command Line window:
The machine must reboot to complete the un-installation. Reboot now? [y.n]
  • Press Y on the keyboard.
  • Wait for the computer to restart.
All McAfee products are now removed from your computer.
These McAfee removal instructions can be found at http://ts.mcafeehelp.com/faq3.asp?docid=408302
Keep in mind, this should be done from Windows normal mode.

Then reboot.

After reboot, when in normal mode...

* Open notepad - don't use any other texteditor than notepad or the script will fail.
Copy/paste the text in the quotebox below into notepad:

Save this as txtfile CFScript

Then drag the CFScript into ComboFix.exe as you see in the screenshot below.

I had to remove McAfee from safemode - I can't load normal Windows - it crashes every load. But it did seem to work, and I did it through the add/remove programs.

Here is the ComboFix log:

Wow, I've never seen my computer restart so fast!! I haven't had time to play around too much, but from a quick glance, everything seems to be working great.

Is it safe to reload McAfee now?

Also, what settings do you recommend in terms of internet security (both in IE and in McAfee) to prevent future problems but still allow me to visit the sites I need to visit?

Finally, what applications that you had me download to the desktop can I now delete? Or should I keep these?

Thank you so much for all of your help in this matter. When I first discovered all of these problems, I was fearful that all hope was lost. But your knowledge and aid have been invaluable!

Hi,

Yes, you can reinstall McAfee again, but keep in mind that McAfee is a huge resource hog and because of that, it slows down a lot. That's why I rather recommend another Antivirus instead. Look in my signature below under Antivirus for the ones I recommend.
But if you prefer McAfee and want to keep it, then reinstall it again.

Finally, what applications that you had me download to the desktop can I now delete? Or should I keep these?

You may delete it. No need to keep it.

Glad I could help.

Please read my Prevention page with lots of info and tips how to prevent this in the future.
And if you want to improve speed/system performance after malware removal, take a look here.
Extra note: Make sure your programs are up to date - because older versions may contain Security Leaks. To find out what programs need to be updated, please run the Secunia Software Inspector Scan.

Happy Surfing again!
