Posted 04 December 2008 - 05:43 PM

I have looked at some of the other posts in this topic, and I have something very similar.

1. I cannot update avg software - connection refused error from the "server" (being redirected or blocked).
2. The IE browser gets redirected under some conditions (mostly to helpful sites like symantec.com, avg.com, pctools.com, etc)

In following the Pre-HJT Post Instructions, I have tried to install SpyBot. To do this, I had to put the installer file on the computer from another computer, because I could not get to the web page.

I successfully installed SpyBot. But when I try to start it up, it does not successfully start.

I have also updated the AVG Anti-virus software definitions by locating an update file and putting it on the computer.

Help - please. Where do I start?

Thanks.

PS. I have limited time now, but will be back later in the evening (about 4 hours from now).

Here is the HJT log.

Hello hammerkp,

Posted Image

Try downloading this scanner please:

Please download Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware from one of these places:
http://www.majorgeeks.com/Malwarebytes_Ant...ware_d5756.html
http://www.besttechie.net/tools/mbam-setup.exe

Double Click mbam-setup.exe to install the application.

* Make sure a checkmark is placed next to Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware, then click Finish.
* If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
* Once the program has loaded, select "Perform Quick Scan", then click Scan.
* The scan may take some time to finish,so please be patient.
* When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
* Make sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
* When disinfection is completed, a log will open in Notepad and you may be prompted to Restart.(See Extra Note)
* The log is automatically saved by MBAM and can be viewed by clicking the Logs tab in MBAM.
* Copy&Paste the entire report in your next reply along with a fresh HijackThis log.

Extra Note:
If MBAM encounters a file that is difficult to remove, you will be presented with 1 of 2 prompts, click OK to either and let MBAM proceed with the disinfection process,if asked to restart the computer, please do so immediately.

Thanks,
tea

I could not get to either link that you gave me.

I tried 2 different methods to get there.

1. Click on the link
2. Copy the link into the URL

Both attempts got the same result. The IE browser displayed "The page cannot be displayed" error.

Earlier, I put the mbam-setup.exe file on the infected computer by transferring it by CD-ROM.

When I double click on mbam-setup.exe installer, nothing happens.
I checked in the Task Manager. I see the "mbam-setup.exe" process, but not the application.

Ken.

Hi Ken,

As I thought, so please post the ComboFix report here in the thread when you're ready. You should see a vast improvement.

Same thing happened with ComboFix.exe as happened earlier.

From the infected computer, I could not download the installer file.
So, I transferred the installer to the infected computer via CDROM.

When I try to install, nothing gets to completion.
I see the ComboFix.exe in the Task Manager Process tab, but not in the Applications tab.

And nothing gets installed.

Ken.

Did the second tool I gave you run all right? Please run the first one again and send the result to me in a message. Do you have a pen/flash drive? That would probably be a better way to transfer tools, if possible.

Sorry, I mis-read the last post.

I was able to download and run The RunMe.exe tool.
The PC was restarted when directed.

On restart, the AVG anti-virus software identified C:|WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\TDSSXFUM.DLL as a Trojan Horse downloader.

What do I do with the AVG warning?

I have not done anything with the second mbam-setup.exe installer yet.

By the way, I was transferring installers to the infected computer to ensure nothing is transferred to the clean computer.

............the AVG anti-virus software identified C:|WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\TDSSXFUM.DLL................

This is part of the rootkit, but not all.

By the way, I was transferring installers to the infected computer to ensure nothing is transferred to the clean computer.

I understand that. If you do have a flash drive to transfer ComboFix with, please do. It can be scanned before it goes back to the clean computer again.

First, the computer is behaving much better after running ComboFix.
I can get to www.avg.com.
I am also able to login to this forum from the previously infected computer.

Below is the log from the MBAM quick scan.

I will post the log from the full scan when it completes.

Ken.
