Posted 04 December 2008 - 04:39 PM

I recently started getting these popups in Firefox that showed an IP address for the URL followed by a ton of characters. The popups never really showed anything. It was just a blank page and the status bar said "Done." Ad-aware isn't findning anything and I can't run a virus check at security.symantec.com because I keep getting an error saying Active X isn't enable and it is. Anyway, here are the log and info text files:

I really don't want to have to reinstall windows, but I will if I have to.

Hi,

I understand that you need help in order to get rid of the malware that is present on your system - But you need to help us first..
I notice that you never scanned with an Antivirus previously before starting this thread - because you don't even have an Antivirus installed!
This is somewhat suicidal in today's digital world.
That's why I want you to install one first!!

* Please install Avira Antivirus: http://www.free-av.com/
This is a free Antivirus.

Perform a full scan with Avira and let it delete everything it is finding.
Then reboot.
After reboot, open your Avira and select "reports".
There doubleclick the report from the Full scan you have done. Click the "Report File" button and copy and paste this report in your next reply together with a new HijackThislog.
Then we'll start from there, because it really makes no sense otherwise that we clean this up manually if an Antivirusscan is not present which should be able to deal with most and prevent further reinfection.

Thanks, but somehow I managed to get rid of this thing already.

btw, avira completely bogged down my computer. I had to uninstall it and do everything with ad-aware, avast and hijack this. shortly after I installed avira though it kept spiking my CPU to about 30% every second or so. I'm not sure if the virus had some sort of way of screwing me over when using avira, or if I got a bad copy or what, but I couldn't do anything with it.

Hi,

In your post you said you also have installed Avast in between. Then it explains why you're having problems with Avira since you cannot install more than 1 Antivirus. (not compatible).

Thanks, but somehow I managed to get rid of this thing already.

To be honest, If I see your first log, I can tell you that your computer was/maybe still is severly infected and I KNOW that the scanners you mention don't recognise all malware that was present, so I'm sure there's still malware present and running - even though you don't notice any problems anymore.

But it's up to you... If you really believe that your computer is clean and don't find it necessary to post a new HijackThislog again to doublecheck - then let me know, so I can close this thread.
However, I do recommend you post a new HijackThislog for review though, because I'm pretty sure malware is still present and running.

Your call.

I'm only convinced because I'm not noticing any problems-which means I'm not really.

I'll do another scan and then post more logs as soon as I can...
