Hello, I'm new so I hope I'm following all of the rules...

I use Windows XP Media Center Edition with SP3. It is a Dell Inspiron.

My Firefox web searches were being hijacked in Google and Yahoo. IE and Opera were no better. (Search results looked OK, but their links went to random sales sites.) Common malware removal support sites were being blocked. One search link led me to Antivirus 2009, which I thought looked odd so I immediately CTRL-ALT-DELETE and killed the Firefox process because the Antivirus 2009 page looked like it was actively trying to do something. I don't know if I killed it in time.

Eventually I tried Safe Mode, but it came up without a start menu, and it eventually froze if I pressed the mouse button. I tried this several times. System restore did not appear to work either (but maybe I did it wrong?).

Then I tried Altavista search, and those results were not being hijacked so I could at least find some useful information. I download and ran Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware. It found a TDSS rootkit. The log is below:

I also manually searched for all files with a "tdss" in the name and found one named tdss.dat (I think?). I deleted it too.
Now a registry search for "tdss" shows no matches.

Several subsequent runs of MBAM show no problems. See example log below.

Then I downloaded Kaspersky Internet Security and installed it. It found nothing.

*******************************************************************************
END: RSI LOG.TXT
*******************************************************************************

Then I paused my local Kaspersky and ran the Kaspersky online scanner, as suggested by your site. I kicked it off last night before bed, and when I woke up I had a blue screen with the following message:

*******************************************************************************
BEGIN: Blue screen message
*******************************************************************************

A problem has been detected and Windows has been shut down to prevent damage to your computer.

The problem seems to be caused by the following file: klif.sys

If this is the first time that you've seen this stop error screen, restart your computer. If this screen appears again, follow these steps:

Check to make sure any new hardware or software is properly installed. If this is a new installation, ask your hardware or software manufacturer for any windows updates you might need.

If the problems continue, disable or remove any newly installed hardware or software. Disable BIOS memory operations such as caching or shadowing. If you need to use Safe Mode to remove or disable components, restart your computer, press F8 to select Advanced Startup Options, and then select Safe Mode.

Technical Information:

*** STOP: 0x000000D4 (0xF1678C48, 0x000000FF, 0x00000001, 0x80542675)

klif.sys
Beginning dump of physical memory
Physical memory dump complete.
Contact your system administrator or technical support group for further assistance.

*******************************************************************************
END: Blue screen message
*******************************************************************************

Searching for klif.sys, it looks like a Kaspersky problem.

After manually shutting off the computer and turning it back on, it seemed to come back up fine. I then started a Kaspersky full scan and left for work.

What could have caused the blue screen?

I would appreciate any help in determining whether my computer is still infected and what additional steps I can take to make sure that it is clean and protected.

Thanks!

Chris

I forgot to mention that I tried Safe Mode again (after the TDSS was removed and Kaspersky installed) and it seems to work fine now. Previously Safe Mode was showing the words "Safe Mode" in the four corners of the screen, and showing some version information along the top of the screen, but did not have a start menu or icons on the desktop. Now it has the start menu and icons.)

Hello. I am PropagandaPanda (Panda or PP for short), and I will be helping you with your log.

I apologize for the delay in response. We get overwhelmed with logs at times, but we are trying our best to keep up. If you have since resolved the original problem you were having, we would appreciate you letting us know. If not please perform the following so I can have a look at the current condition of your machine.

You may want to keep the link to this topic in your favourites. Alternatively, you can click the Posted Image button at the top bar of this topic and Track this Topic, where you can choose email notifications. The topics you are tracking are shown here.

Please take note of some guidelines for this fix:
  • Refrain from making any changes to your computer including installing/uninstall programs, deleting files, modifying the registry, and running scanners or tools. Doing so could cause changes to the directions I have to give you and prolong the time required. Further more, you should not be taking any advice relating to this computer from any other source throughout the course of this fix.
  • If you do not understand any step(s) provided, please do not hesitate to ask before continuing. I would much rather clarify instructions or explain them differently than have something important broken.
  • Even if things appear to be better, it might not mean we are finished. Please continue to follow my instructions and reply back until I give you the "all clean". We do not want to clean you part-way, only to have the system re-infect itself.
  • Finally, please reply using the Posted Image button in the lower right hand corner of your screen. Do not start a new topic. The logs that you post should be pasted directly into the reply. Only attach them if requested or if they do not fit into the post.
Download and Run ATFCleaner
Please download ATF Cleaner by Atribune. This program will clear out temporary files before we run OTScanIt. You will likely be logged out of the forum where you are recieving help.

This program is for XP and Windows 2000 only.
  • Double-click ATF-Cleaner.exe to run the program.
  • Under Main Select Files to Delete choose: Select All.
  • Click the Empty Selected button.
  • If you use any other browsers, select them appropriately from the top and empty all items.
Download and Run OTScanIt
Download OTScanIt by OldTimer to your Desktop and double-click on it to extract the files. It will create a folder named OTScanIt on your desktop.
  • Open the OTScanIt folder and double-click on OTScanIt.exe to start the program. If you are running on Vista then right-click the program and choose Run as Administrator.
  • Check the Scan all users box at the top left.
  • Click the Extras button under "Additional Scans".
  • Now click the Run Scan button on the toolbar.
  • When the scan is complete Notepad will open with the report file loaded in it.
  • Click the Format menu and make sure that Wordwrap is not checked. If it is then click on it to uncheck it.
  • Close Notepad (saving the change if necessary).
  • Use the Add Reply button in the forum and Attach the scan back here (do not copy/paste it as it will be too big to fit into the post). It will be located in the OTScanIt folder and named OTScanIt.txt.
Download and Run Scan with GMER
We will use GMER to scan for rootkits.
  • Download gmer.zip and save to your desktop.
  • Unzip/extract the file to its own folder. (Click here for information on how to do this if not sure. Win 2000 users click here.
  • Close all other running programs. There is a small chance this application may crash your computer so save any work you have open.
  • Double-click on Gmer.exe to start the program.
  • Allow the gmer.sys driver to load if asked.
  • If it gives you a warning at program start about rootkit activity and asks if you want to run a scan...click NO.
  • Click the >>>.
  • Click on Settings, then check the first five settings:
    • System Protection and Tracing
    • Processes
    • Save created processes to the log
    • Drivers
    • Save loaded drivers to the log
  • Click OK.
  • You will be prompted to restart your computer. Please do so.
After the reboot, run Gmer again and click on the Rootkit tab.
  • Look at the right hand side (under Files) and uncheck all drives with the exception of your C drive.
  • Make sure all other boxes on the right of the screen are checked, EXCEPT for Show All.
  • Click on the Scan and wait for the scan to finish.
Note: Before scanning, make sure all other running programs are closed and no other actions like a scheduled antivirus scan will occur while this scan completes. Also do not use your computer during the scan. You will know that the scan is done when the Stop buttons turns back to Scan.
  • When completed, click on the Copy button and right-click on your Desktop, choose New>Text document. Once the file is created, open it and right-click again and choose Paste. Save the file as gmer.txt and copy the information in your next reply.
  • Note: If you have any problems, try running GMER in Safe Mode
Important!:Please do not select the Show all checkbox during the scan..

In your next reply include:
-the OTScanIt log (attached)
-the GMER log (pasted directly into your reply)

Please also tell me of any changes you have made to your computer since your topic was started.

If you do not make a reply in 5 days, we will need to close your topic.

With Regards,
The Panda

Important Note to Other Users Reading this Topic: The instructions provided in this topic below this point are for the original topic starter only. Even if you have similar problems or log entries to those given here, please do not follow the directions, especially those involving specific tools and scripts. Hello.

It looks like MalwareBytes was able to remove the infection.

Kapsersky's klif.sys does not allow the Kaspersky Online scan to run. It has similar effects on other scanners. This is normal.

Please remove using Add/Remove Programs these old Java versions:
J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0 Update 6
J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0 Update 8
J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0 Update 10
Java™ 6 Update 2
Java™ 6 Update 3
Java™ 6 Update 5

Post back with a fresh HijackThis log please.

Are there any signs of infection right now?

With Regards,
The Panda

Panda,

I uninstalled the Java items as you suggested.

I re-ran the RSIT scanner, and the log.tx file (HijackThis) is posted below.

I do not see any signs of infection right now. I think it is more paranoia at this point (particularly fear of keyloggers stealing passwords). Are my fears unfounded? I've been using the Kaspersky virtual keyboard for passwords. Is this any safer than using the keyboard? Any other suggestions?

I really appreciate you help.

Hello chriscc.

Logs are clean

I've been using the Kaspersky virtual keyboard for passwords. Is this any safer than using the keyboard? Any other suggestions?

A good keylogger doesn't record keystrokes, but will record the data that is sent out. I don't think it helps much.

Since you were infected before, let's reset the system restore.

Set New System Restore Point
Now you should set a Restore Point to prevent possible reinfection from an old one. Some of the malware you picked up could have been saved in System Restore. Since System Restore is a protected directory, tools cannot access it to delete these bad files, which sometimes can reinfect your system. Setting a new restore point after cleaning your system will help prevent this and enable your computer to "roll-back" to a clean working state.

The easiest and safest way to do this is:
  • Go to Start > Programs > Accessories > System Tools and click System Restore.
  • Choose the radio button marked "\Create a Restore Point on the first screen then click Next. Give the Restore Point a name then click Create.
  • Then, click on Start > Run and type:
    cleanmgr
  • Click OK > More Options tab.
  • Click Clean Up in the System Restore section to remove all previous restore points except the newly created one.
Preventing Malware Infection in the Future
Please take some time to look at the following links, giving some advice and suggestions for preventing future infections: For general slowness problems that you may have, take a look at Slow Computer/browser? It May Not Be Malware. Read How to use the Startup Database to identify and disable uneeded processes and increase the amount of available resources.

Thanks Panda.

I'll follow your suggestions.

I have a couple more questions, if you have the time and interest in answering: I'm curious about how bleepingcomputer.com works. Are you volunteers? How are you funded? I ask because I'd consider helping in any way that might be suitable.

Regards,

chriscc
