Well, thank you to boopme. I spent almost the whole day today and believe I have gotten rid of the original trojan. It is safely quarantined; I have run SAS and the other program you told me to run multiple times.

Also, my automatic updates for windows are working again, although I still haven't been offered SP2. I use Mozilla as a browser if that matters.

The bad news: This all started when I tried to install Spy Hunter. My computer wouldn't allow it to install, in retrospect, probably because of my firewall (the Kerio free version). Now - my firewall is gone and Spy Hunter won't go away. So if I DO still have something trying to "phone home", it's no longer being blocked by the two way firewall I used to have and I am frantically seeking another free two way firewall.

Any suggestions? I've googled on Spy Hunter and gotten ambiguous answers on it, but it's been nothing but trouble for me. And I feel naked without my firewall. Can't buy one on line because I'm not 100% sure I don't have a rootkit - there is an entry in my Avast vault about Sony something and I do watch a lot of movies and listen to music on this machine.

But my original problem is fixed and thank you for a pleasant forum that doesn't laugh at stupid mistakes. At least, not publicly.
