Got some great help here last time, so I'm back.

Dad's computer has been slow & freezing up lately. It's got XP SP3 Media Center Edition and McAfee Total Protection. Threatfire is also installed as extra precaution. I downloaded Malware Bytes and SuperAntiSpyware. They didn't turn up anything horrible except a ton of cookies and Zango adware. The Zango appears to be gone. I deleted all temp internet files, history, & cookies. Ran Dell Diagnostics, checked hardware for errors, & defragmented. Also got rid of some programs that were not being used. I haven't tried a system restore because I don't know how long it's been acting up for (I think it's been awhile).

Today the computer has been worse than ever. Can't do much of anything with IE, it freezes up & sometimes opens up multiple windows, then freezes up. Often it just opens up a blank white window with the toolbars at the top (blank address bar). I can't uninstall or fix IE and I can't upgrade to the new beta.

If I click on various icons on the desktop (even if I right click on them) Nuance PDF installation starts. So something strange is definitely going on. Apparently Tool-NirCmd PUP was blocked & quarantined by both Threatfire & McAfee today.

Thanks for any help,

Hi mmmartie,

Welcome to Bleeping Computers

My name is Tomk_. I would be glad to take a look at your log and help you with solving any malware problems. HijackThis logs can take a while to research, so please be patient and I'd be grateful if you would note the following:
  • I will be working on your Malware issues, this may or may not, solve other issues you have with your machine.
  • The fixes are specific to your problem and should only be used for the issues on this machine.
  • Please continue to review my answers until I tell you your machine appears to be clear. Absence of symptoms does not mean that everything is clear.
  • It's often worth reading through these instructions and printing them for ease of reference.
  • If you don't know or understand something, please don't hesitate to say or ask!! It's better to be sure and safe than sorry.
  • Please reply to this thread. Do not start a new topic.
  • Unfortunately, if I do not hear back from you within 5 days, I will be forced to close your topic. If you still need help after I have closed your topic, feel free to create a new one.
I apologize for the delay in response. We get overwhelmed at times but we are trying our best to keep up.

Nothing is showing. Let's get an online scan. It takes a couple hours to run so be prepared.

Please go to Kaspersky website and perform an online antivirus scan.
  • Read through the requirements and privacy statement and click on Accept button.
  • It will start downloading and installing the scanner and virus definitions. You will be prompted to install an application from Kaspersky. Click Run.
  • When the downloads have finished, click on Settings.
  • Make sure these boxes are checked (ticked). If they are not, please tick them and click on the Save button:
    • Spyware, Adware, Dialers, and other potentially dangerous programs
      Mail databases
  • Click on My Computer under Scan.
  • Once the scan is complete, it will display the results. Click on View Scan Report.
  • You will see a list of infected items there. Click on Save Report As....
  • Save this report to a convenient place. Change the Files of type to Text file (.txt) before clicking on the Save button.
  • Please post this log in your next reply.

Thank you for taking the time to help me.

Like several other scanners, Kaspersky detected no malware! There was nothing in the report.

I just don't understand...I thought something would show up somewhere. I don't know what else would cause some of the problems that have been happening.

Let's run another scan (much quicker than Kaspersky). Once in awhile it picks up an oddball.

Disable resident protections (Antivirus...); you'll re-enable them after the scan

Download Lop S&D < here

Double-click Lop S&D.exe
Choose the language, then choose Option 1 (Search)
Wait till the end of the scan
Post the log which is created: (%SystemDrive%\lopR.txt)

It definately seems that something is going on, However, it doesn't appear to be malware related so there isn't really much I can do for you. I suggest you post in the Windows forum and see if a Tech person can do something for you.

A little cleanup. Files aren't "bad" but not needed at startup. Might speed you up a little.
  • Please open HijackThis and run Do a system scan only
  • Check the boxes next to ONLY the entries listed below(if present):
    • R0 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Local Page =
      R0 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Local Page =
      O2 - BHO: (no name) - {7E853D72-626A-48EC-A868-BA8D5E23E045} - (no file)
      O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [BrMfcWnd] C:\Program Files\Brother\Brmfcmon\BrMfcWnd.exe /AUTORUN
      O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [SetDefPrt] C:\Program Files\Brother\Brmfl06c\BrStDvPt.exe
      O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [Adobe Reader Speed Launcher] "C:\Program Files\Adobe\Reader 8.0\Reader\Reader_sl.exe"
      O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [SSBkgdUpdate] "C:\Program Files\Common Files\Scansoft Shared\SSBkgdUpdate\SSBkgdupdate.exe" -Embedding -boot
      O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [Nuance PDF Professional 5-reminder] "C:\Program Files\Nuance\PDF Professional 5\Ereg\Ereg.exe" -r "C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Nuance\PDF Professional 5\Ereg\Ereg.ini"
      O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [msnmsgr] "C:\Program Files\MSN Messenger\msnmsgr.exe" /background
  • Close all programs except for HijackThis.
  • Click on Fix checked
  • A box will pop up asking you if you wish to fix the selected items. Please choose YES.
  • Once it has fixed them, please exit/close HijackThis.
Log looks good :D

You can delete LOP S&D

The following are standard reccomendations. Utilize what you can. Pat yourself on the back for what you're already doing.

You need to create a new Clean restore point.
Click Start Menu > Run > copy and paste

Press OK. Choose Create a Restore Point then click Next. Name it (something you'll remember) and click Create, when the confirmation screen shows the restore point has been created click Close.

Remove all previous Restore Points
Click Start Menu > Run > copy and paste

At top, click on More Options tab. Click Clean up... button in the System Restore box. Click on Yes button. When finished, click on Cancel button to exit.

Double-click My Computer.
Click the Tools menu, and then click Folder Options.
Click the View tab.
Check "Hide file extensions for known file types."
Under the "Hidden files" folder, Uncheck "Show hidden files and folders."
Check "Hide protected operating system files."
Click Apply, and then click OK.
  • Make your Internet Explorer more secure - This can be done by following these simple instructions:
    • From within Internet Explorer click on the Tools menu and then click on Options.
    • Click once on the Security tab
    • Click once on the Internet icon so it becomes highlighted.
    • Click once on the Custom Level button.
    • Change the Download signed ActiveX controls to Prompt
    • Change the Download unsigned ActiveX controls to Disable
    • Change the Initialize and script ActiveX controls not marked as safe to Disable
    • Change the Installation of desktop items to Prompt
    • Change the Launching programs and files in an IFRAME to Prompt
    • Change the Navigate sub-frames across different domains to Prompt
    • When all these settings have been made, click on the OK button.
    • If it prompts you as to whether or not you want to save the settings, press the Yes button.
  • Next press the Apply button and then the OK to exit the Internet Properties page.

Update your AntiVirus Software - It is imperative that you update your Antivirus software at least once a week
(Even more if you wish). If you do not update your antivirus software then it will not be able to catch any of the new variants that may come out.

Use a Firewall - I can not stress how important it is that you use a Firewall on your computer.
Without a firewall your computer is succeptible to being hacked and taken over.
I am very serious about this and see it happen almost every day with my clients.
Simply using a Firewall in its default configuration can lower your risk greatly.

For a tutorial on Firewalls and a listing of some available ones see the link below:

Understanding and Using Firewalls

Keep Microsoft Windows Updated - This will ensure your computer has always the latest security updates available installed on your computer. The easiest way to do this is to turn on Automatic Updates. Do this by:
  • From your desktop, right-click on My Computer,
  • click on Properties
  • Select the Automatic Updates tab
  • Click on Automatic
  • Click on Apply button
  • Click on OK to exit.
If there are new updates to install, install them immediately, until there are no more critical updates.

Install SpywareBlaster - SpywareBlaster will add a large list of programs and sites into your Internet Explorer
settings that will protect you from running and downloading known malicious programs.

A tutorial on installing & using this product can be found here:

Using SpywareBlaster to protect your computer from Spyware and Malware

Download and install the free version of WinPatrol - This program protects your computer in a variety of ways and will work well with your existing security software.

Update all these programs regularly - Make sure you update all the programs I have listed regularly.
Without regular updates you WILL NOT be protected when new malicious programs are released.

Only run one Anti-Virus and Firewall program.

I would also suggest you read this:

Please respond back that you understand the above and let me know if you have any questions. Otherwise, this thread will be closed Resolved.

Thank you for your help. I have printed off your suggestions; the ones that I can't seem to do now, due to this crazy computer, I will do when everything is back to normal. I will post in the Windows forum.

Thanks again!
