Posted 03 December 2008 - 10:43 PM

Recently my wife accessed a website that I believe had a virus or trojan hidden in the html download. Her AV software (Norton AV) provided a popup that a Trojan attack was stopped, but being suspicious I downloaded and ran some additional tools (SpyBot, MalwareBytes, Super Anti-Spyware, CCleaner, HJT, ComboFix, RSIT, Kaspersky).

Initial scans revealed two suspicious files, a "cuvy42A8.exe" and "rpcc.exe" both living in the Windows/Sys32 folder. I was able to remove these files and they have not come back, nor did any new files appear in the Sys32 folder since their removal.

Since then, all AV tools come up clean (both in normal and Safe Mode), with the exception of MBAM and Kaspersky. MBAM reports 4 Trojan.Agent Registry entries but no infected files, etc. I have run MBAM multiple times, and each time it says it has failed to remove the entries and will do so on reboot. This apparently also fails, leaving me stuck with these 4 entries. Kaspersky shows a Podnuha Rootkit infection.

The computer seems to be running fine, but I am suspicious with all these AV reports of malware being present.

Below are my RSIT logs and Kaspersky report log. I have the MBAM log as well, if desired.

Hoping to get some assistance in cleaning off the wife's PC if there's something hidden. Thank you!

Hello Chunx_A and welcome to BleepingComputer,

1. * Clean your Cache and Cookies in IE:
  • Close all instances of Outlook Express and Internet Explorer
  • Go to Control Panel > Internet Options > General tab
  • Under Browsing History, click Delete.
  • Click Delete Files, Delete cookies and Delete history
  • Click Close below.
* Clean your Cache and Cookies in Firefox (In case you also have Firefox installed):

  • Click Privacy in the menu..
  • Click the Clear now button below.. A new window will popup what to clear.
  • Select all and click the Clear button again.
  • Click OK to close the Options window
* Clean other Temporary files + Recycle bin
  • Go to start > run and type: cleanmgr and click ok.
  • Let it scan your system for files to remove.
  • Make sure Temporary Files, Temporary Internet Files, and Recycle Bin are the only things checked.
  • Press OK to remove them.
2. Please download Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware from Here or Here

Doubleclick mbam-setup.exe to install the application.
  • Make sure a checkmark is placed next to Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware, then click Finish.
  • If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
  • Once the program has loaded, select "Perform Quick Scan", then click Scan.
  • The scan may take some time to finish,so please be patient.
  • When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
  • Make sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
  • When disinfection is completed, a log will open in Notepad and you may be prompted to Restart.(See Extra Note)
  • The log is automatically saved by MBAM and can be viewed by clicking the Logs tab in MBAM.
  • Copy&Paste the entire report in your next reply along with a fresh HijackThis log.
Extra Note:
If MBAM encounters a file that is difficult to remove, you will be presented with 1 of 2 prompts, click OK to either and let MBAM proceed with the disinfection process,if asked to restart the computer, please do so immediatly.

3. Please download ComboFix from one of the locations below, and save it to your Desktop.

Link
Link
Link

Double click the ComboFix icon to run it.
If ComboFix askes you to install the Recovery Console, please do so..
The Windows Recovery Console will allow you to boot up into a special recovery mode, in case your computer has a problem after an attempted removal of malware. This allows us to help you.
Once the Recovery Console is installed, continue with the malware scan.

Note: Make sure not to click ComboFix's window while it's running. That may cause it to stall or freeze.

Please post the log from ComboFix (can also be found as C:\ComboFix.txt) in your next reply.

If you have any questions along the way, STOP and ask them before proceeding !!

Greetings,
Thunder

I have a question before proceding:

I've finished the steps in your above post, stopping at ComboFix. The need for a recovery console concerns me. I have ComboFix and am ready to run it, but I have to ask - what are the chances that I'll actually need to use the recovery console? What is the liklihood that ComboFix will damage my OS so much so that Recovery is required?

This is my wife's PC. She's reluctant to spend the time backing things up onto other media. I've done some for her, but I am sure more needs to be done. Please advise. Anytime you start a PC there's always some risk of data loss, but with ComboFix, the instructions almost make it sound like I am asking for it.

Thanks - standing by to proceed.

Hello Chunx_A,

You have smart lady there, to be reluctant to install anything she's not familiar with.

The truth is, I've used ComboFix over a thousand times by now,
and had only 1 case where, due to user error (not reading the instructions carefully) and an external program running, the PC no longer booted normally.
So you see, changes are extremly slim that anything goes wrong,
however sUBs, the developer of this tool, built in this failsafe anyway (along with some other goodies at our disposal),
to make sure we can revert a system to it's previous state in any case.
Installing the Recovery Console however should be a concern of every user, since it makes repairs due to any other malfunction a lot easier. :)

If however you still feel unsure, then we can use some other steps to clean and check your system.

Greetings,
Thunder

Completion time: 2008-12-12 12:14:03 - machine was rebooted
ComboFix-quarantined-files.txt 2008-12-12 20:14:00

Pre-Run: 9,933,799,424 bytes free
Post-Run: 10,084,478,976 bytes free

207
-------------------------------------------------------------

As you can see, the Trojan.Agent registry values are still present, and they still don't disappear when the computer is rebooted.

During Combo Fix's run, it told me (in the DOS window) that it was deleting some files including the Ie4 error log, and from the Sys 32 folder msxm14.dll and msxm14r.dll. It also deleted the Win/Sys32/System folder. After completing, CF rebooted the PC.

Combo Fix had a hard time after reboot, as this PC's Norton AV auto-restarted on reboot, and initially blocked the finalization of the log preparation process. I was able to disable Norton, and the log finished.

I sure hope you can help with the cleaning of this PC. Thanks again, Thunder!

Hello Chunx_A,

Let's clean up some more :

Open Notepad - don't use any other texteditor than Notepad or the script will fail !
Copy/paste the bold, blue text below into an empty notepad window:http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/t/183917/possible-trojanagent-or-podnuha-rootkit-infection/
Collect::[9]
c:\windows\System32\COMCTL32a.dll
c:\windows\System32\drivers\ymnubwxg.sys
c:\docume~1\IANAND~1\LOCALS~1\Temp\ewdmaudn.sys
File::
c:\windows\SYSTEM32\locate.com
C:\MGtools.exe
C:\MGlogs.zip
Driver::
ymnubwxg
ewdmaudn
Registry::
[-HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\~\Browser Helper Objects\{0922B4A5-AE2B-4381-9F00-CDF0BFEC02C4}]
[-HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\~\Browser Helper Objects\{7C8D7C27-48BB-4DE4-9F9A-4F528CF2434A}]
[-HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\~\Browser Helper Objects\{B14D2498-FEAA-42F8-9D16-87FEA0797BE8}]

Save this as txtfile CFScript

Then drag the CFScript into ComboFix.exe as you see in the screenshot below,
and please, make sure your security programs don't block ComboFix !!.

Posted Image

This will start ComboFix again. Upon reboot, (in case it asks to reboot), post the contents of the Combofix log in your next reply, as well as a fresh HijackThislog.

When CF finishes running, the ComboFix log will open along with a message box, --do not be alarmed. With the above script, ComboFix will capture a file to submit for analysis.

Ensure you are connected to the internet and click OK on the message box. A browser will open.
Simply follow the instructions to copy/paste/send the requested file [9]-Submit_Date_Time.zip.

Are you still having problems ?

Greetings,
Thunder

Will do, but a question first: Why put the MGTools in the ComboFix script? It's an anti-spyware program that another malware removal website recommended. I could just delete it, if you think it's a problem.

Otherwise, I've got the script on the desktop and ready to run.

Also, I've still got RSIT. Is that how you want me to generate the HJT log?

Please advise.

Hello Chunx_A,

It's better to have as few tools as possible on your system while running ComboFix,
to avoid interference and to shorten the run time.

You can run HijackThis independently afterwards.

Hello Chunx_A,

Looks like we've got the last of them

Start HijackThis, close all open windows leaving only HijackThis running. Place a check against the following, if still present :O2 - BHO: (no name) - {FDD3B846-8D59-4ffb-8758-209B6AD74ACC} - (no file)
Click on Fix Checked when finished and exit HijackThis.
Make sure your Internet Explorer is closed when you click Fix Checked!

Then, you can remove all used tools and folders created in the process.
To remove ComboFix :
Go to Start > Run, and copy and paste next command in the field:ComboFix /u
Make sure there's a space between Combofix and /u
Then press Enter.
This will uninstall Combofix, delete its related folders and files, restore your clock settings, hide file extensions, hide the system/hidden files and resets System Restore again.

No more problems ?

Greetings,
Thunder

Thunder,

I've run that latest HJT, deleting the O2 entry as described above. Malware Bytes now comes up clean, as does SpyBot. Good Times!! THANK YOU!

I've uninstalled ComboFix as described above as well.

Before we part ways, I want to get some more info from you, and pick your brain briefly about this PC. My questions:

1. What was the actual infection of this PC? Can we tell from the .zip file and the other things you've detected in HJT, ComoFix, Malware Bytes, etc?

2. Depending on what the wife's PC was infected with, what is the likelihood of Identity Theft from this infection? Can she safely do online shopping with this PC now?

3. I'd now like to remove the Windows Recovery Console so the wife doesn't have to click her way through that each boot-up. What's the process, or is that a bad idea?

4. When I booted up (before the last HJT and uninstall of ComboFix) I saw a brief DOS box with CMD32.exe running. Is that related to the infection, or the cures?

5. Big Question For Last: Back in 2004 the wife clicked on another wrong site, and got the Bargain Buddy Malware. After I removed that, I wanted to update to XP SP2 (and I have the CD for it). But IT coworkers told me that after being infected with any virus or malware on XP, installing SP2 would most likely result in a corrupted OS and the need to wipe the drive and start over. My question is, "is this true, and can I safely go ahead now and install SP2 on this system?" After this ordeal, I'd really like to bring her PC up to SP2, and on to SP3, to give her all the Firewall, phishing filter and other security upgrades offered since SP1A. Please let me know what you think about this, before I go and do something unwise. :)

Thanks again - I learned a few things about computers through this, and hope that I can keep the wife from visiting any other hacked and infected websites (if indeed that's what caused all this).
