Hello all, this is my first post to this site.

The problem:
While surfing on Firefox, new tabs will open taking me to different websites (pro-scanner.net and some others).

What I've done so far:
I currently have zone alarm and avast installed. I rebooted and ran the avast boot time scanner where it found (and I deleted) 6 threats. I opened up Firefox and the problem still persists. I downloaded and ran a HJT scan but I can't seem to find anything that seems out of place. Please help.

HJT Log:
Logfile of Trend Micro HijackThis v2.0.2

I am also in the process of learning how to read and interpret HJT logs. If you could also tell me what line of the log raises the red flag, it would be very helpful.

So far the only things that seem suspicious to me are the files in the system32 folder. Specifically vuzonida.dll, wuganabu.dll, jojekya.dll, and boyeseti.dll.

Hi,

I see you have Viewpoint installed...
Viewpoint Manager is considered as foistware instead of malware since it is installed without users approval but doesn't spy or do anything "bad". This will change from what we know in 2006 read this article: http://www.clickz.com/news/article.php/3561546
I suggest you remove the program now. Go to Start > Settings > Control Panel > Add/Remove Programs and remove the following programs if present.
  • Viewpoint
  • Viewpoint Manager
  • Viewpoint Media Player
Then, * Please visit this webpage for instructions for downloading and running ComboFix:

http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/combofix/how-to-use-combofix

Post the log from ComboFix when you've accomplished that, along with a new HijackThis log.

Thanks so much for your quick reply. The log is posted below. I found that combofix did end up deleting about 8 .dll files from the system32 folder.

Hi,

This looks OK again. As a final cleanup and to adjust some security settings, perform next please...

Open notepad and copy and paste next present in the quotebox below in it:
(don't forget to copy and paste REGEDIT4)

REGEDIT4

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\software\microsoft\security center]
"AntiVirusDisableNotify"=dword:00000000
"UpdatesDisableNotify"=dword:00000000

[-HKEY_CURRENT_USER\software\microsoft\windows\currentversion\explorer\mountpoints2\{2616b90b-2d04-11dd-983f-0007e96d2191}]

[-HKEY_CURRENT_USER\software\microsoft\windows\currentversion\explorer\mountpoints2\{6d0445d8-aae0-11dd-9952-0007e96d2191}]

[-HKEY_CURRENT_USER\software\microsoft\windows\currentversion\explorer\mountpoints2\{7044a7d7-4d52-11dd-9892-0007e96d2191}]

[-HKEY_CURRENT_USER\software\microsoft\windows\currentversion\explorer\mountpoints2\{798167fa-5ac6-11dd-98b3-0007e96d2191}]

[-HKEY_CURRENT_USER\software\microsoft\windows\currentversion\explorer\mountpoints2\{97415c97-2fee-11dd-984a-0007e96d2191}]

Save this as fix.reg Choose to save as *all files and place it on your desktop.
It should look like this: Posted Image
Doubleclick on it and when it asks you if you want to merge the contents to the registry, click yes/ok.
(In case you are unsure how to create a reg file, take a look here with screenshots.)

Then, Your version of Java is outdated and needs to be updated to take advantage of fixes that have eliminated security vulnerabilities.

Thanks a million. Firefox no longer has popups. Can I also delete the Fix.reg file that I created?
As I said before I'm in the process of learning how to read and interpret these logs. The registry values that you asked me to delete were just duplicate entries right?
Again thanks alot for all your help.

Hi,

Yes, you can delete the fix.reg file.

The registry values that you asked me to delete were just duplicate entries right?

No, some entries were deleted because they are referring to a questionable autorun file and one entry was adjusted for better security.

Glad I could help.

Please read my Prevention page with lots of info and tips how to prevent this in the future.
And if you want to improve speed/system performance after malware removal, take a look here.
Extra note: Make sure your programs are up to date - because older versions may contain Security Leaks. To find out what programs need to be updated, please run the Secunia Software Inspector Scan.

Happy Surfing again!
