Hello.

I was on myspace when I started getting random pop-ups, fake alerts to buy some antivirus junk, etc. I did a little search and downloaded Superantispyware. It ran and found viruses named adware.vundo variant, adware. vundo variant/rel, and Trojan. fake-alert/trace. It said it cleaned them out and quarantined, but when I rebooted the problem persisted. I searched some more and found a program named Vundofix.exe. It scanned and found nothing, though the problem was still there. I found this forum and would appreciate some guidance. Please bear with me, as I am not an expert. Here is my HijackThis log:

Hi,

I see you have Viewpoint installed...
Viewpoint Manager is considered as foistware instead of malware since it is installed without users approval but doesn't spy or do anything "bad". This will change from what we know in 2006 read this article: http://www.clickz.com/news/article.php/3561546
I suggest you remove the program now. Go to Start > Settings > Control Panel > Add/Remove Programs and remove the following programs if present.
  • Viewpoint
  • Viewpoint Manager
  • Viewpoint Media Player
Then, * Go to start > run and copy and paste next command in the field:

ComboFix /u

Make sure there's a space between Combofix and /
Then hit enter.

This will uninstall Combofix, delete its related folders and files, reset your clock settings, hide file extensions, hide the system/hidden files and resets System Restore again.

Let me know in your next reply how things are now.

Right now, everything appears to be working properly. I have not gotten a pop-up yet so I can assume it is fixed! Thanks a million.

In the interest of never having to go through this again-any idea where this came from? As I said, I was on myspace when this virus hit. I was not downloading anything. I don't visit "shady" websites or engage in p2p downloading. Any guidance is greatly appreciated. Again, thank you.

Hi,

Unfortunately you may get infected via legitimate sites as well. This indeed happens a lot on social networking sites such as Myspace, Facebook etc..
That's why I recommend to use Firefox as a browser in combination with the noscript addon: https://addons.mozilla.org/nl/firefox/addon/722
So scripts are blocked by default. Only allow the scripts on the pages if you need it.

Glad I could help.

Please read my Prevention page with lots of info and tips how to prevent this in the future.
And if you want to improve speed/system performance after malware removal, take a look here.
Extra note: Make sure your programs are up to date - because older versions may contain Security Leaks. To find out what programs need to be updated, please run the Secunia Software Inspector Scan.

Happy Surfing again!
