This is a last ditch effort to save this windows XP installation before I re-install windows. I've been infected with virtumonde around 6 months ago but I was able to purge it from my system.
Just yesterday my system began doing unusual things.
After installing acronis truimage and rebooting windows requested a password for my username which I've never set up.
I rebooted and booted with "Last known good configuration" option when pressing f8.
Now when windows boots up there is a very long pause waiting for the usernames to come up.
There is also a long pause when clicking on username and its "loading my personal settings..."
Once in windows odd things happen.
The start button and taskbar were hidden which is not how I had it before. Windows from running programs do not show up on the taskbar anymore.
When I try to load Malwarebytes ant-malware I get a runtime error 372 Failed to load control "vbalGrid" from vbalsgrid6.ocx. Your version of vbalsgrid6.ocx might be outdated. Make sure you are using the version of the version of control that was provided with your application.
I cannot un-install programs I get and error "the windows installer Service could not be accessed."
It appears as if something is interfering with windows services but I cannot figure out what.
I cannot cut and paste anything
I cannot drag and drop files using explorer or D-opus.
I have scanned with nod32.
I have scanned with Lavasoft ad-aware.
I have scanned with spybot.
I have scanned with hijackthis and removed suspicious things recommended by http://hijackthis.de/
Everything appears to be OK from the scanners but Windows is still FUBAR.
To start with here is my HJT log file.

Thanks

ZZ

Hello and welcome to Bleeping Computer

We apologize for the delay in responding to your request for help. Here at Bleeping Computer we get overwhelmed at times, and we are trying our best to keep up. Please note that your topic was not intentionally overlooked. Our mission is to help everyone in need, but sometimes it takes just a little longer to get to every request for help.

If you have since resolved the original problem you were having, we would appreciate you letting us know. If not please perform the following steps below so we can have a look at the current condition of your machine. If you have not done so, include a description of your problem, along with any steps you may have performed so far.

Upon completing the steps below a staff member will review and take the steps necessary with you to get your machine back in working order clean and free of malware.

Thanks and again sorry for the delay.

We need to see some information about what is happening in your machine. Please perform the following scan:
  • Download DDS by sUBs from one of the following links. Save it to your desktop.
  • Double click on the DDS icon, allow it to run.
  • A small box will open, with an explanation about the tool. No input is needed, the scan is running.
  • Notepad will open with the results, click no to the Optional_Scan
  • Follow the instructions that pop up for posting the results.
  • Close the program window, and delete the program from your desktop.
Please note: You may have to disable any script protection running if the scan fails to run. After downloading the tool, disconnect from the internet and disable all antivirus protection. Run the scan, enable your A/V and reconnect to the internet. Information on A/V control HERE
