check your event logs for errors or warnings.

If you see an error 51 backup everything.

For comparative purposes...did you try the XP defrag utility?

Hi. once I try the defag it freezes everything. so basically i have to reboot. I am beginning to blame pctools which I have on my computer desktop. as for the events log nothing found so far.

I might uninstall the antivirus and try it that way

OK. i've uninstalled pctools and ran both system defrag and auslogics and they where both fine.
I will have to find a decent antivirus and take it from there.

Nice work, happy computing .

I've used Avira Free, AVG Free, Comodo, and several other AV programs with success. Following link may be usefuL: http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/t/405/antivirus-antimalware-and-antispyware-resources/
