Hi All

My computer is infected with something I can't get rid of. It is very slow/freezes when trying go to different sites. I am logged on here with my work lap top because my desktop freezes trying to open the pages.

I've run AVG and it comes up clean. I ran Spybot and fixed the problems it found but I was unable to download the latest definitions. I downloaded Malwarebytes on my laptop and used a flash drive to install it onto the desktop. I couldn't download the updates. I ran it anyway and fixed the problems it found. I was then able to download the updates and ran it again. It comes up clean. Computer is still slow/freezes. I still can not download the updates for SpyBot. I ran Malwarebytes in safe mode. It's clean. I restarted the computer. Same problems remain.

What's next

Hello are you running XP or another? It may also be helpful to see what MBAM removed. Would you post the infected scan log, please.
The log is automatically saved and can be viewed by clicking the Logs tab in MBAM.
Copy and paste the contents of that report in your next reply.

Lets also run these

Please download ATF Cleaner by Atribune & save it to your desktop.
  • Double-click ATF-Cleaner.exe to run the program.
  • Under Main "Select Files to Delete" choose: Select All.
  • Click the Empty Selected button.
  • If you use Firefox browser click Firefox at the top and choose: Select All
  • Click the Empty Selected button.
If you would like to keep your saved passwords, please click No at the prompt.
  • If you use Opera browser click Opera at the top and choose: Select All
  • Click the Empty Selected button.
If you would like to keep your saved passwords, please click No at the prompt.
  • Click Exit on the Main menu to close the program.
Note: On Vista, "Windows Temp" is disabled. To empty "Windows Temp" ATF-Cleaner must be "Run as an Administrator".

Next scan with SAS
Please download and scan with SUPERAntiSpyware Free
  • Double-click SUPERAntiSypware.exe and use the default settings for installation.
  • An icon will be created on your desktop. Double-click that icon to launch the program.
  • If asked to update the program definitions, click "Yes". If not, update the definitions before scanning by selecting "Check for Updates". (If you encounter any problems while downloading the updates, manually download them from here. Double-click on the hyperlink for Download Installer and save SASDEFINITIONS.EXE to your desktop. Then double-click on SASDEFINITIONS.EXE to install the definitions.)
  • In the Main Menu, click the Preferences... button.
  • Click the "General and Startup" tab, and under Start-up Options, make sure "Start SUPERAntiSpyware when Windows starts" box is unchecked.
  • Click the "Scanning Control" tab, and under Scanner Options, make sure the following are checked (leave all others unchecked):
    • Close browsers before scanning.
    • Scan for tracking cookies.
    • Terminate memory threats before quarantining.
  • Click the "Close" button to leave the control center screen and exit the program.
  • Do not run a scan just yet.
Reboot your computer in "Safe Mode" using the F8 method. To do this, restart your computer and after hearing your computer beep once during startup (but before the Windows icon appears) press the F8 key repeatedly. A menu will appear with several options. Use the arrow keys to navigate and select the option to run Windows in "Safe Mode".

Scan with SUPERAntiSpyware as follows:
  • Launch the program and back on the main screen, under "Scan for Harmful Software" click Scan your computer.
  • On the left, make sure you check C:\Fixed Drive.
  • On the right, under "Complete Scan", choose Perform Complete Scan and click "Next".
  • After the scan is complete, a Scan Summary box will appear with potentially harmful items that were detected. Click "OK".
  • Make sure everything has a checkmark next to it and click "Next".
  • A notification will appear that "Quarantine and Removal is Complete". Click "OK" and then click the "Finish" button to return to the main menu.
  • If asked if you want to reboot, click "Yes" and reboot normally.
  • To retrieve the removal information after reboot, launch SUPERAntispyware again.
    • Click Preferences, then click the Statistics/Logs tab.
    • Under Scanner Logs, double-click SUPERAntiSpyware Scan Log.
    • If there are several logs, click the current dated log and press View log. A text file will open in your default text editor.
    • Please copy and paste the Scan Log results in your next reply.
  • Click Close to exit the program.

Thanks for the quick reply.

I've tried everything suggested. Superantispyware found a bunch of stuff and removed it. Still the same problems. I'm still using my laptop to post because I can't get on to this site on the desktop.

My computer info is in my signature.

Hi,

OK. I'm stuck.I have the older version of mbam on the desktop but I can't download the updates. I installed and updated mbam on my laptop but I don't know how to get the updated version from the laptop to the desktop. I have a flash drive but it seems I am only copying the shortcut and when I try to open it on the desktop is says,"the data base could not be located. would you like to download an updated copy?"

How do I update?

If you encounter any problems while downloading the updates, manually download them from HERE and just double-click on mbam-rules.exe to install. Alternatively, you can update through MBAM's interface from a clean computer, copy the definitions (rules.ref) located in C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Malwarebytes\Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware from that system to a usb stick or CD and then copy it to the infected machine.

Thanks for your patients

I'm still having trouble updating. I've tried updating directly on the infected computer. It gets about 1/3 of the way done and stops responding. I've waited over 45 minutes for it to finish. The link in your earlier post gets me the version I just ran. I updated on the clean computer and found the new definitions - C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Malwarebytes\Malwarebytes' . I copied them on my flash drive and installed the file onto the desktop of the infected computer but I can't open it. Is this right? The clean computer uses windows XP. My desktop uses windows vista. I can't find the same folder I copied from in vista. I open the c drive but there isn't an folder marked "documents and settings" like in XP.

What do I do now?

Never mind I found it and am scaning now.

Mike

Hi,

Well since last night I remembered that my duaghter had downloaded a game the day before we started having problems. I uninstalled that game and restored my computer to the day before the download. I then updated mbam and ran a scan.

Unfortunately you may have restored yourself to an infected Restore point . Lets update and run the SAS and Mbam scans till we can get back to all 0's in the logs. Then we will prevent that.

I thought so as soon as I saw the log. Next time I get a good idea I'll ask first.
