Hello,
I'm starting with and following the instructions in the topic "Preparation Guide For Use Before Posting a Hijack This Log".
I have been infected by Antivirus Pro 2009. It is listed in Task Manager Processes, there is a "Privacy Alert" warning balloon for Antivirus Pro 2009. Windows Defender keeps finding, and not removing, win32/FakeRean. My IE and Firefox browsers are hijacked. I can get to My Yahoo home page and surf Yahoo but cannot get to anywhere else, including bleepingcomputer.com. So I am using an uninfected notebook to post on the forum and download to a flashdrive what I need to fix my PC. Because my browser is hijacked I was unable to use the Kaspersky scan. I did successfully run RSIT.exe by downloading it to my notebook and transfering it to my infected PC with the flashdrive.

Thank you for your help.

Here are the two RSIT reports:

Hello!
My name is Sam and I will be helping you.

I will do my best to communicate clearly to you so that we can resolve your issues as quickly as possible. In order to see what's going on with your computer I will ask for you to post various logs from the tools that we will use to fix your computer. Please communicate freely with me about how your computer is reacting and behaving as we work through this process.

Please download SDFix and save it to your Desktop.

Double click SDFix.exe and it will extract the files to %systemdrive%
(Drive that contains the Windows Directory, typically C:\SDFix)

Please then reboot your computer in Safe Mode by doing the following :
  • Restart your computer
  • After hearing your computer beep once during startup, but before the Windows icon appears, tap the F8 key continually;
  • Instead of Windows loading as normal, the Advanced Options Menu should appear;
  • Select the first option, to run Windows in Safe Mode, then press Enter.
  • Choose your usual account.
  • Open the extracted SDFix folder and double click RunThis.bat to start the script.
  • Type Y to begin the cleanup process.
  • It will remove any Trojan Services and Registry Entries that it finds then prompt you to press any key to Reboot.
  • Press any Key and it will restart the PC.
  • When the PC restarts the Fixtool will run again and complete the removal process then display Finished, press any key to end the script and load your desktop icons.
  • Once the desktop icons load the SDFix report will open on screen and also save into the SDFix folder as Report.txt
(Report.txt will also be copied to Clipboard ready for posting back on the forum).
  • Finally paste the contents of the Report.txt back here in your next reply.

Hi Sam,
Thank you for helping me!
I downloaded SDFix onto my notebook, copied it to the flashdrive and copied it to the infected PC's desktop. But I cannot get it to open on the PC by double clicking or using the right click/context menu "Open". SDFix does open properly on the uninfected notebook.

More on inability to open SDFix on the infected PC.
SDFix.exe shows in Task Manager Processes.
I rebooted but it did not make a difference.

The infection that you have is now blocking the tools that we use to remove it. So we're going to have to try to work around that.

Rename SDFix.exe to gotcha.exe and then try to run it again.

I renamed SDFix.exe to gotcha.exe and installed it sucessfully.

Rebooted and got to Windows Advanced Options Menu, but it acts like it is freezing. Unable to move arrows with arrow keys. Unable to select "Open Normally" using Enter key. I let it sit and work for 10 min or so, several times. No luck getting the arrow keys to work.

Shut off pc using switch. Tried shutting it off with switch while booting. Then turn it on hoping it would start in Safe Mode because it did not completely boot. This did not work. Tried several times.

Cannot get to Safe Mode.

Also, the other day when this first occurred, I learned the pc will not boot from the XP Installation disc so you can run Repair. I can open the disk in Windows, however. I can open Bios. Bios is functional meaning I can move around Bios using the arrow and other keys. I can change the Boot Sequence.

Let's try this.
Download SafeBootKeyRepair.exe by sUBs and save to your desktop.
  • Double-click on it and follow the instructions.
  • When finished, see if you can access safe mode.

Hi Sam,

First off, I noticing the PC is running slower and slower.

I ran Safeboot Key Repair. It sat for several minutes with instruction: "Please wait...". No

other screens or instructions appeared until suddenly it produced the Safeboot_Repair.txt

which I have pasted below.

I rebooted and got to Windows Advanced Options Menu, but it still acts like it is freezing.
Arrow keys are still not working when in Windows Advanced Options Menu so I can't get to
Safe Mode.

The programmers behind this stuff are really nasty people. Good Grief!
Thank you for helping me with this Sam. It is definately way, way above my pay grade!

Here's the Safeboot Repair report:

Ok, let's change gears here a little bit.

Please download ComboFix from one of these locations:

Link 1
Link 2
Link 3

Important!
You should NOT use Combofix unless you have been instructed to do so by a Malware Removal Expert.
It is intended by its creator to be used under the guidance and supervision of an Malware Removal Expert, not for private use.
Using this tool incorrectly could lead to disastrous problems with your operating system such as preventing it from ever starting again.

Make sure that you save ComboFix.exe to your Desktop
  • Disable your AntiVirus and AntiSpyware applications, usually via a right click on the System Tray icon. They may otherwise interfere with our tools

  • Double click on ComboFix.exe & follow the prompts.
If Combofix will not run, rename it to cf.exe

  • As part of it's process, ComboFix will check to see if the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed. With malware infections being as they are today, it's strongly recommended to have this pre-installed on your machine before doing any malware removal. It will allow you to boot up into a special recovery/repair mode that will allow us to more easily help you should your computer have a problem after an attempted removal of malware.

  • Follow the prompts to allow ComboFix to download and install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console, and when prompted, agree to the End-User License Agreement to install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console.
**Please note: If the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is already installed, ComboFix will continue it's malware removal procedures.

Once the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed using ComboFix, you should see the following message:

Click on Yes, to continue scanning for malware.

When finished, it shall produce a log for you. Please include the C:\ComboFix.txt in your next reply.
Posted Image If I have helped you in any way, please consider a donation to help me continue the fight against malware.

Failing to respond back to the person that is giving up their own time to help you not only is insensitive and disrespectful, but it guarantees that you will never receive help from me again. Please thank your helpers and there will always be help here when you need it!

Can't open Combofix from the desktop. Renamed to cf.exe and still could not open it.
What do these bad guys do, read the forums to learn the fixes and then program to block the fixes?

Sam,
Combofix ran and a dialogue box called "Rootkit !!" appeared saying Combofix has detected the presence of rootkit activity and needs to reboot the machine.
Should I reboot?

That's exactly what they do.

Yes, please reboot.

I plugged in my internet (cable) connection as I had unplugged it when I got the infection.
I disabled McAfee (I thought) and uninstalled Search and Destroy.

I rebooted and this happened:

The install windows recovery console appeared. The mouse was very irratic behaving.

Pressed Enter key to install recovery console.
Got this message: "Internal error. Failed to enumerate download path. aborting...shall continue scanning for malware".
Auto scan commenced (desktop icons and taskbar not showing during auto scan).

McAffe displayed a PUP warning that disappeared quickly because the system rebooted. The PUP warning asking to accept or not something that began with REM//ADM. I could not get all of it written down before it rebooted. I did not take any action on the PUP warning.

I don't understand why McAfee caught the PUP as I had disabled McAfee as instructed in the Combofix instructions.

The pc rebooted and the window showing is tittled: "Find3M". "Preparing Log Report. Do not run any programs until ComboFix has finished.

The Find3M finished and produced a log and McAfee PUP warning showed again:

Name of PUP: RemAdm-ProcLaunch!171. Location: C:\cf\psexec.cfexe

What should I do about this PUP?

I checked my Internet connection and it is working. Should I run combofix again, now that my connection is definately working?

Here is the log file:

Mcafee is detecting Combofix, so don't worry about that for now. Combofix made excellent progress, so let's keep going with it.

Copy and paste ALL the following text in the Quote box below into Notepad.
Click on File(in the menu at the top)>Save as../Save as Type: 'All Files' /File name: CFScript to your desktop.

Folder::
c:\program files\AntivirusPro2009

File::
c:\windows\evub._sy
c:\documents and settings\CraigS\Application Data\bytywyzyf.exe
c:\windows\gagud.vbs
c:\documents and settings\All Users\Application Data\otolyvora.dat
c:\windows\zowuxurezy._dl
c:\windows\xypyhoha.pif
c:\windows\ojude.exe
c:\windows\system32\keho.scr
c:\documents and settings\CraigS\Application Data\wukotoza.exe

Registry::
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run]
"Antivirus Pro 2009"=-
Prior to running Combofix.exe you should disable your antivirus program and disconnect from the internet.

Now drag then drop the CFScript file onto ComboFix.exe as seen in the image below.

This will start ComboFix again.
After reboot, (in case it asks to reboot), post the contents of Combofix.txt in your next reply.

Please download Malwarebytes Anti-Malware and save it to your desktop.
alternate download link 1
alternate download link 2
  • Make sure you are connected to the Internet.
  • Double-click on Download_mbam-setup.exe to install the application.
  • When the installation begins, follow the prompts and do not make any changes to default settings.
  • When installation has finished, make sure you leave both of these checked:
    • Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware
    • Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware
  • Then click Finish.
  • MBAM will automatically start and you will be asked to update the program before performing a scan. If an update is found, the program will automatically update itself. Press the OK button to close that box and continue. If you encounter any problems while downloading the updates, manually download them from here and just double-click on mbam-rules.exe to install.
  • On the Scanner tab:
    • Make sure the "Perform Quick Scan" option is selected.
    • Then click on the Scan button.
  • If asked to select the drives to scan, leave all the drives selected and click on the Start Scan button.
  • The scan will begin and "Scan in progress" will show at the top. It may take some time to complete so please be patient.
  • When the scan is finished, a message box will say "The scan completed successfully. Click 'Show Results' to display all objects found".
  • Click OK to close the message box and continue with the removal process.
  • Back at the main Scanner screen, click on the Show Results button to see a list of any malware that was found.
  • Make sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
  • When removal is completed, a log report will open in Notepad and you may be prompted to restart your computer. (see Note below)
  • The log is automatically saved and can be viewed by clicking the Logs tab in MBAM.
  • Copy and paste the contents of that report in your next reply and exit MBAM.
Note: If MBAM encounters a file that is difficult to remove, you will be presented with 1 of 2 prompts. Click OK to either and let MBAM proceed with the disinfection process. If asked to restart the computer, please do so immediately. Failure to reboot will prevent MBAM from removing all the malware.

Failing to respond back to the person that is giving up their own time to help you not only is insensitive and disrespectful, but it guarantees that you will never receive help from me again. Please thank your helpers and there will always be help here when you need it!
