Hello,

About 1 month ago after my computer was rebooted, I got a weird message that a virus had been detected and it asked me to download virus software (which I did not do). For about two days, various popups appeared, continuously telling me I had a virus, and I thought partly that my Avast antivirus program was initiating the virus detection. After reading quite a bit on various forums, it seemed I was infected with smitfraud and after running avast, adaware, spybot search and destroy many times which would apparently detect several trojan horses and said they were gone; however, they were not. Finally I downloaded Smitfraud and this seemed to do the trick.

I was fine for about 3 weeks. But now, everytime I run spybot search and destroy, adaware, and sometimes when Avast does a scan, one or more of the programs are detecting multiple virtumonde viruses. Plus I am getting popups spontaneously, some of which are explicit sites. The popups can occur in Internet explorer, Firefox, and even Safari. I have recently removed all of my java programs because I read Java programs can be contributory. So I think I am infected with virtumonde. Each time I run one or more of the above programs, it says they are removed but the virtumonde virus resurfaces. I have also tried vundofix and virtumundobegone without success.

I recently came across this site which I wish I would have seen sooner. I am running XP and not Vista.

I appreciate any and all of your help in advance. Thank You!

Hi,

I see you are running Teatimer.
I suggest you to disable it because it can interfere with the changes you'll make on your system.
When everything is done and your log is clean again, you can enable it again.
If teatimer gives you a warning afterwards that some changes were made, allow this instead of blocking it.
How to disable TeaTimer <== click me for instructions.
After you disabled Teatimer, download ResetTeaTimer.bat to your desktop. (In case you use Firefox, rightclick the link and choose "save as").
Doubleclick ResetTeaTimer.bat and let it run.
This will only take a few seconds.

Then, I see you have Viewpoint installed...
Viewpoint Manager is considered as foistware instead of malware since it is installed without users approval but doesn't spy or do anything "bad". This will change from what we know in 2006 read this article: http://www.clickz.com/news/article.php/3561546
I suggest you remove the program now. Go to Start > Settings > Control Panel > Add/Remove Programs and remove the following programs if present.
  • Viewpoint
  • Viewpoint Manager
  • Viewpoint Media Player
Then, * Please visit this webpage for instructions for downloading and running ComboFix:

http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/combofix/how-to-use-combofix

Post the log from ComboFix when you've accomplished that, along with a new HijackThis log.
Extra note, please disable Avast Antivirus since it may interfere with Combofix.

Thank you for your help. Several issues below if you wouldn't mind delving into:

A) First, I had trouble running combofix, as it would not launch at all despite several tries. I even tried in safe mode. I had to reboot twice. After the second reboot and in safemode it finally worked, although it froze at the end, and would not rpovide a logfile. I ran it again and the logfile reflected both instances of it running. I will attach it below.

 After the reboot of combofix, and now each time I reboot when my computer come up I get two error messages as follows:
1) "Error loading c:\windows\system32\zihimubi.dll The specified module could not be found"
2) "Error loading c:\windows\system32\malesifo.dll The specified module could not be found"

C) I have Ca Yahoo Anti-Spy as part of my yahoo toolbar. (I'm not sure if it is worthwhile or not, what do you think?) Anyway, each time I run it, along with lots of ads it detects, it seems to detect 2 different things, which I remove; however they both always return:
1) BiFrost "Backdoor"
2) KaZaA "P2P"

I remove these and when I exit internet explorer and pull it up again, after running the program it detects them again. I cannot seem to remove them for good.

D) I have noticed that I seem to have seen "Bolivar" somewhere in one of my antivirus or antispyware programs detected; supposedly removed, but always returning. Not sure what to do here.

E) I noticed that combofix removed several infected files. Earlier today, I had backed up lots of files and copied them onto my external hard drive as I contemplated reformatting the hard drive. Do I need to worry that my external hard drive is also compromised?

Log of 2 runs of combofix below:

Hi,

To answer your questions..

Don't worry about that for now. We still have to delete some malware related leftovers here which should take care of that. Also, I see that Teatimer was still enabled during the Combofix run, so that may explain why you got those errors afterwards since Teatimer blocks registry changes again. That's why, please make sure Teatimer is disabled. Your latest HijackThislog doesn't "match" the log from Combofix, so that's why i think Teatimer was the cause here.

I have never really trusted the CA Yahoo Antispy anyway - loads of false positives and bad detections. Kazaa isn't necessarily bad though... and the "Bifrost" could be a false positive as well. We'll look into that later.

D) I have noticed that I seem to have seen "Bolivar" somewhere in one of my antivirus or antispyware programs detected; supposedly removed, but always returning. Not sure what to do here.

We'll take care of that as well with the following steps.

E) I noticed that combofix removed several infected files. Earlier today, I had backed up lots of files and copied them onto my external hard drive as I contemplated reformatting the hard drive. Do I need to worry that my external hard drive is also compromised?

I don't know what you have backed up. If you only backed up programs and personal files and settings, there's nothing to worry about. If you have backed up the entire drive, then malware will be present there as well. So in that case, delete that backup.

Do next please... * Open notepad - don't use any other texteditor than notepad or the script will fail.
Copy/paste the text in the quotebox below into notepad:

File::
c:\windows\f49f4d98.dat
c:\windows\f49f4daa.dat
c:\program files\temp01
c:\windows\system32\fcdddcbbe7_r.dll
Folder::
C:\VundoFix Backups
Driver::

Registry::
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\software\microsoft\security center]
"UpdatesDisableNotify"=dword:00000000

"ropiruhuse"=-
"CPMa363c740"=-
[-HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Winlogon\Notify\mljgg]

Save this as txtfile CFScript

Then drag the CFScript into ComboFix.exe as you see in the screenshot below.

This will start ComboFix again. After reboot, (in case it asks to reboot), post the contents of Combofix.txt in your next reply together with a new HijackThislog.

Once again thank you.

I did everything you mentioned.

Quick question, when I loaded combofix this time, the program indicated that a new version was available and it asked if I'd like to update which I clicked yes. It tried to download; however, indicated that it "failed" and would use the prior version. Does this mean anything?

Hi,

It tried to download; however, indicated that it "failed" and would use the prior version. Does this mean anything?

Don't worry about that - We already removed the malware with Combofix anyway now.

Just some leftovers here...

* Start HijackThis, close all open windows leaving only HijackThis running. Place a check against each of the following:

O2 - BHO: (no name) - {761497BB-D6F0-462C-B6EB-D4DAF1D92D43} - (no file)
O3 - Toolbar: (no name) - {0BF43445-2F28-4351-9252-17FE6E806AA0} - (no file)

* Click on Fix Checked when finished and exit HijackThis.
Make sure your Internet Explorer is closed when you click Fix Checked!

Then, * Go to start > run and copy and paste next command in the field:

ComboFix /u

Make sure there's a space between Combofix and /
Then hit enter.

This will uninstall Combofix, delete its related folders and files, reset your clock settings, hide file extensions, hide the system/hidden files and resets System Restore again.

Let me know in your next reply how things are now.

Hi miekiemoes,

Once again thank you, you do excellent work.

Things seem back to normal. Everything seems to be running smoothly.

A few questions:

1) For protection (as you may already know), I run Avast, Spybot search and destroy, and adaware. I also have windows firewall only, which I don't know if I need another firewall. At any rate, is all of this protection sufficient; do you recommend anything additional or should I change anything?

2) Should I re-enable teatimer?

3) Any idea which sites programs caused any/all of the malware?

4) I deleted the backup on my external drive per your recommendation. Is there any way I can have you check that drive for malware to ensure there is no cross contamination?

Thanks again. You saved me from reformatting my hard drive and/or purchasing a new computer.

Hi,

To answer your questions..

1) For protection (as you may already know), I run Avast, Spybot search and destroy, and adaware. I also have windows firewall only, which I don't know if I need another firewall. At any rate, is all of this protection sufficient; do you recommend anything additional or should I change anything?

That's sufficient, but you may want to read my Prevention page with lots of info and tips how to prevent this in the future.

And if you want to improve speed/system performance after malware removal, take a look here.
Extra note: Make sure your programs are up to date - because older versions may contain Security Leaks. To find out what programs need to be updated, please run the Secunia Software Inspector Scan.

2) Should I re-enable teatimer?

Yes, If you know how Teatimer works and can deal with it. After all, Teatimer only alerts you of changes in the registry whether it's legitimate or not. So you may not block everything.

3) Any idea which sites programs caused any/all of the malware?

There are thousands of them. In 80% of the cases, malware is getting installed via cracks / keygens / illegal software and other illegal sites.
The other infection you were dealing with was installed via Facebook - See here for more info: http://www.kaspersky.com/news?id=207575670 and http://www.pcworld.com/businesscenter/arti...are_attack.html

4) I deleted the backup on my external drive per your recommendation. Is there any way I can have you check that drive for malware to ensure there is no cross contamination?

No worries about that. Even though you backup files where malicious files were present there as well, it won't do anything because it's not executed. It's a bit the same as deleting a malicious file and send it to your dustbin. It won't do anything there as well. It just sits there. Unless you restore the backup and put back the malicious files to your hard drive. And even then, to get reinfected, you'll need to execute the malicious files again, because since the related registry keys were already deleted as well, it won't run anyway, even though you restored the files.
And, in your case, you already deleted that backup, so there's really nothing to worry about it anymore.

Happy Surfing again!

Thanks for the quick response!

a few more questions:

1) Should I install comodo firewall? I notice it also has virus protection and really only need the firewall protection. I think it would slow my machine down if I had both Avast and Comodo running simultaneously.

2) I had deleted all of my copies of Java. Is it ok to download the latest version?

You are a lifesaver!

Hi,

In case you want to install Comodo, then uncheck the option to install the Antivirus during install. Also uncheck to install the Comodo Toolbar, because this one is powered by Ask.com and not recommended.
Extra note, Comodo is for more advanced users and it also display alerts everytime a registry change was made - so this means, during the installation of a certain program or Windows update, it will display alerts all the time. make sure you check to allow it there, because that's a common mistake many make when they use a firewall and block all alerts.
If Comodo is too advanced for you, I suggest the Sunbelt Firewall instead: http://www.sunbeltsoftware.com/Home-Home-O...sonal-Firewall/

Yes, it's ok to download and install the latest java version

Hello:

I was so thankful to you who helped me a few days ago to rid my computer of malware. I ran spybot today and the program detected the following:

Virtumonde: [SBI $1E12D746] User settings (Registry key, nothing done)
HKEY_USERS\S-1-5-21-3148218525-2428216343-939698376-1006\Software\Microsoft\fias4013

I want to ensure that this is just a remant; however, it probably needs to be removed correct?

Let me know what you think

I will attach a new HJ log below:

Hi,

I was so thankful to you who helped me a few days ago to rid my computer of malware. I ran spybot today and the program detected the following:

Virtumonde: [SBI $1E12D746] User settings (Registry key, nothing done)
HKEY_USERS\S-1-5-21-3148218525-2428216343-939698376-1006\Software\Microsoft\fias4013

I want to ensure that this is just a remant; however, it probably needs to be removed correct?

That's indeed a leftover in the registry and won't do anything. If Spybot won't remove it, then remove it by doing next instead:

Open notepad and copy and paste next present in the quotebox below in it:
(don't forget to copy and paste REGEDIT4)

REGEDIT4

[-HKEY_USERS\S-1-5-21-3148218525-2428216343-939698376-1006\Software\Microsoft\fias4013]

Save this as fix.reg Choose to save as *all files and place it on your desktop.
It should look like this: Posted Image
Doubleclick on it and when it asks you if you want to merge the contents to the registry, click yes/ok.
(In case you are unsure how to create a reg file, take a look here with screenshots.)
