HijackThis Log: Please help Diagnose - Win32 Virus Problem

Hello all,

I suppose I should preface this by giving you all the lowdown on my situation. A few days ago, my younger brother noticed that there was some sort of virus on our computer. I have been trying to deal with it, thought I was successful, but have now discovered another Trojan running around and am coming to this forum for help. I'll start at the beginning, where I first started dealing with the problem.

I immediately ran the anti-virus program I have on my computer, Nod32. It didn't pick anything up, so I went out and downloaded Avast! and ran it. It found a rootkit and around eight Trojans, all of which I quarantined and then deleted. All problems ceased. Still nervous, I downloaded RootKit Revealer and Sophos. Sophos didn't pick up anything, and RootKit Revealer's results didn't make any sense to me. I went to school the next day and talked to a friend about it. He advised me to boot in SafeMode and scan, which I did. I found nothing, and thus figured I had the problem licked.

Now, I'm going to stop for a second and tell you what virus I believe I had... I believe that I had a Win32 FakeAlert Trojan, because that is what my computer exhibited the symptoms of. Thus, I had searched for information about this virus, and discovered that is had a brastk.exe file among other things in my folders. I couldn't find it, which also led me to believe I had dealt with the problem. So that's that.

Now, today, four days after I had finished worrying, my little brother had another Trojan Horse alert jump up on him. He called me up, and I told Avast! to stop the download. I then scheduled a Boot-Time Scan, and let it do it's thing. It pulled up one infected file, which I punted into the Chest, or quarantine. It's name is Win32: Trojan-gen, and it was found in C:\Windows\System 32. So, I've left the file in the Chest, and am now searching for solutions. I discovered HiJackThis, and this forum, and decided to give it a go. So, I just ran HiJack This, and I'm going to post the log here:

Would somebody kindly tell me how I can deal with my problem? I'm not amazing with computers, but if I get instructions I feel confident that I can maneuver around and figure out how to fix this with aid.

Please note that your topic was not intentionally overlooked. Our mission is to help everyone in need, but sometimes it takes just a little longer to get to every request for help.

If you have since resolved the original problem you were having, we would appreciate you letting us know. If not please perform the following steps below so we can have a look at the current condition of your machine. If you have not done so, include a description of your problem, along with any steps you may have performed so far.

Upon completing the steps below a staff member will review and take the steps necessary with you to get your machine back in working order clean and free of malware.

We need to see some information about what is happening in your machine. Please perform the following scan:
  • Download DDS by sUBs from one of the following links. Save it to your desktop.
  • Double click on the DDS icon, allow it to run.
  • A small box will open, with an explaination about the tool. No input is needed, the scan is running.
  • Notepad will open with the results, click no to the Optional_Scan
  • Follow the instructions that pop up for posting the results.
  • Close the program window, and delete the program from your desktop.
Please note: You may have to disable any script protection running if the scan fails to run. After downloading the tool, disconnect from the internet and disable all antivirus protection. Run the scan, enable your A/V and reconnect to the internet. Information on A/V control HERE
