Hello bwest and welcome to BleepingComputer.

Download and install the trial version of Ewido Security Suite.
  • Launch Ewido by double-clicking the desktop icon.
  • The program will prompt you to update; click the OK button.
  • The program will now go to the main screen.
  • On the left hand side of the main screen click update.
  • Click on Start.
The update will start and a progress bar will show the updates being installed.
Once the updates are installed close Ewido.

Open Notepad, (Start button, click on Run, type in Notepad, and click OK) copy & pastes the following block of text into Notepad.

@ECHO OFF
cd %windir%
Nail.exe /FULLREMOVE
sc config SvcProc start= disabled
sc stop SvcProc
sc delete SvcProc
attrib -s -r -h nail.exe
attrib -s -r -h svcproc.exe
del nail.exe
del svcproc.exe
cd %windir%\system32
attrib -s -r -h DrPMon.dll
del DrPMon.dll
exit

Click on 'File', then 'Save as'
Select 'Save as type:' as All Files,
Save the file to the desktop as remove.bat. Close Notepad.

Next, reboot into Safe Mode.

Once in Safe Mode, double-click on remove.bat. A window should open and close very quickly --- this is normal.

Then run Ewido, and run a full scan. Save the log, I'll need to see it.

Start HJT and click on the SCAN button. Put a check mark in front of the following lines if they still show:

R1 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Default_Search_URL = http://red.clientapps.yahoo.com/customize/...//www.yahoo.com
R0 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Search,CustomizeSearch =

F2 - REG:system.ini: Shell=Explorer.exe C:\WINDOWS\Nail.exe

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [picsvr] C:\WINDOWS\system32\picsvr\picsvr.exe
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [tsvcin] C:\WINDOWS\System32\n20050308.EXE
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [jtcpek] c:\windows\system32\eojaexf.exe
O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [Cxukicp] C:\WINDOWS\system32\??stem32\dvdplay.exe

O20 - Winlogon Notify: Syncmgr - C:\WINDOWS\system32\gpnml3511.dll

O23 - Service: System Startup Service (SvcProc) - Unknown owner - C:\WINDOWS\svcproc.exe

Close all open windows except for HijackThis and click Fix Checked.

Open Windows Explorer (Windows key+e), navigate to and delete the following files and folders (Don't be concerned if they can not be found):

C:\WINDOWS\System32\n20050308.EXE <--Files
c:\windows\system32\eojaexf.exe
C:\WINDOWS\svcproc.exe

C:\WINDOWS\system32\picsvr\ <--Folder

Restart your computer in normal mode and please post a new HijackThis log, as well as the log from the Ewido scan.

I did the hijack this log and then left to go out of town before I had a chance to do what the reply suggested. While I was gone, a co-worker used this computer and ended up shutting it down because it kept freezing up. Upon my return, when I log on with my username, I get my wallpaper, but that is all. No start menu, desktop icons, or anything else. I have to turn the power off at the surge protector and reboot through scandisk to get it back on. I can log on with the other username on this computer. On that username, I am getting some of the same stuff, redirected navigation, auto navigation when I wasn't working online, etc. Should I go ahead and follow the directions on my hijack this log reply, or run a new one and resubmit, with the specs for this user? HELP!!

Let's see if we can get your desktop back first.

From a user account that works, download smitfraud.reg from http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/files/reg/smitfraud.reg. Save it (or copy it) to your C: drive so that it is located at "C:\smitfraud.reg".

Boot your machine as far as it will go into your account.

Hit and hold the control key. then hit and hold the alt key, then hit the delete key (Ctrl-alt-del). The task manager should open. On the top menu of Taskmanager, click on File, then New Task (Run...), and enter C:\smitfraud.reg. Click OK. It should ask if it is OK to add the information to the registry - click Yes.

Still from task manager, click on Shut down | Restart. Log into your account and see if your desktiop is back.

(fingers crossed....)

Betsy, were you able to download and install the file I directed you to? If not, or if it didn't help, please post an HJT log from the working account.

Is this machine running WindowsXP HOME or PRO? Does the machine have a floppy drive? Are there files in your unreachable account that are important to recover, or would it work to set up a new account for you and abandon the old one?

I didi manage to get my desktop back by following the steps you suggested. Thanks! Then I went through the steps from your previous posting. In response to some of your questions: WindowsXP Pro, it does have a floppy drive, as well as 2 CD drives (original drive and an added burner). I am adding my new Hijack This log and the Ewido scan log. Evidently, I still have a problem, as I have been redirected to 4 sites while typing this message. Thank you so much for all of your help thus far. I have been pulling my hair out with this deal! I am thrilled to have found a help site that is acurate and helpful!

Great that you got the desktop back. If that simple fix hadn't worked, it could have gotten 'interesting' There is still some serious malware in the log, so the popups are not surprising. But all of this should be cleanable.

Open the Control Panel then double click on Add/Remove Programs. Look for the following and uninstall them if found (most will not be there):

- MyWebSearch
- MyWay Search Bar
- My Way Speedbar
- Search Assistant
- TopText
- TopText ILookup
- HotText
- ContextPro
- Ezula
- AdDestroyer
- Web Offer

Configure Windows to enable viewing of Hidden and System files.

Reboot into Safe Mode.

Start HJT and click on the SCAN button. Put a check mark in front of the following lines if they still show:

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [MyWebSearch Email Plugin] C:\PROGRA~1\MYWEBS~1\bar\3.bin\mwsoemon.exe
O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [eZmmod] C:\PROGRA~1\ezula\mmod.exe
O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [eZWO] C:\PROGRA~1\Web Offer\wo.exe
O4 - Startup: AdDestroyer.lnk = C:\Program Files\AdDestroyer\AdDestroyer.exe
O4 - Global Startup: KODAK Software Updater.lnk = C:\Program Files\KODAK\KODAK Software Updater\7288971\Program\backWeb-7288971.exe

O20 - Winlogon Notify: H323TSP - C:\WINDOWS\system32\lvns0957e.dll
O20 - Winlogon Notify: Hints - C:\WINDOWS\system32\s288lclu1fq8.dll

With ALL OTHER WINDOWS CLOSED, click on Fix Checked.

Open Windows Explorer (Windows key+e), navigate to and delete the following files and folders (Don't be concerned if they can not be found):

C:\WINDOWS\system32\lvns0957e.dll <--Files
C:\WINDOWS\system32\s288lclu1fq8.dll

C:\PROGRA~1\MYWEBS~1\ <--Folders
C:\PROGRA~1\ezula\
C:\PROGRA~1\Web Offer\
C:\Program Files\AdDestroyer\

Reboot normally.

Ewido found some Look2Me files, let's check to see if any of this infection remains.
Download L2mfix from one of these two locations:

http://www.atribune.org/downloads/l2mfix.exe
http://www.downloads.subratam.org/l2mfix.exe

Save the file to your desktop and double click l2mfix.exe. Click the Install button to extract the files and follow the prompts, then open the newly added l2mfix folder on your desktop. Double click l2mfix.bat and select option #1 for Run Find Log by typing 1 and then pressing enter. This will scan your computer and it may appear nothing is happening, then, after a minute or 2, notepad will open with a log. Copy the contents of that log and paste it into this thread.

IMPORTANT: Do NOT run option #2 OR any other files in the l2mfix folder until you are asked to do so!

Post the l2mfix log along with a fresh HJT log.

Yes, still some L2M hiding in there.

Close any programs you have open since this step requires a reboot.

From the l2mfix folder on your desktop, double click l2mfix.bat and select option #2 for Run Fix by typing 2 and then pressing enter, then press any key to reboot your computer. After a reboot, your desktop and icons will appear, then disappear (this is normal). L2mfix will continue to scan your computer and when it's finished, notepad will open with a log. Copy the contents of that log and paste it back into this thread, along with a new hijackthis log.

IMPORTANT: Do NOT run any other files in the l2mfix folder unless you are asked to do so!

End of the school year; lots to do so I'm having a hard time finding a few minutes to work on this. Sorry. I di the Run Fix (#2) and a new HJT log.

End of the school year; lots to do so I'm having a hard time finding a few minutes to work on this. Sorry.

If you're a student, good luck! If you're a teacher, Thank you! I follow incomplete fix threads for at least two weeks, so there's no problem if it takes a few days or so for you to respond.

Now, as for the logs on your account... They're CLEAN! You did a super job. How are things running?

It may be a good idea to take a look at the other account(s) on the machine. But that is up to you. If you'd like to do that, please post a HijackThis log from the next acount. If not, let me know that too and I'll give you my closing speech.

I am actually the librarian/media specialist at a middle school. So, you're welcome. It's a tough job sometimes, but I love it! The only other user profiles on this machine are one from the previous librarian's teenage son (?) and the administrative profile. His profile and mine are the only two that show up on startup. The admin option only shows up when I reboot in safe mode. Should I delete his profile and then run a log for the admin. user?

Thanks again for all of your help!! I have been ready to shove this thing off the desk and tell the tech dept that it died! The fact that it holds my nearly 10,000 media records for the library has saved it from that fate!

Betsy

If the second account (tyler's?) is inactive, you can go ahead and remove it. Let's see an HJT log from the admin account.

Rebooted in safe mode and ran the following log on the admin profile. See what you think.

This log looks clean too.

Keep HijackThis along with it's backup folder for a bit just in case there arises a need for the backup files it has created. The rest of the tools we downloaded and files we created can be uninstalled or deleted. If we have enabled viewing of Hidden and System files, go back and re-hide these files.

If this is a Windows XP system: After you have used your machine a while, and are confident that all is well, we can do a little final cleanup.

Purge Restore points:

XP System Restore periodically creates a partial system backup. It is quite likely that some of the now removed malware has been 'backed up' in those files.

Disable System Restore by following the instructions here,
Reboot,
Re-enble System Restore by following the instructions here.

Run Disk Cleanup

Click on the Start button and then on Run. Type in cleanmgr then click on OK. Be sure the (C:) drive is selected and click OK. It may take a bit for "Compress old files" to complete. Check all the boxes and click on OK, then OK again.

Alternately, a more thorough Disk Cleanup utility can be downloaded:
http://downloads.stevengould.org/cleanup/CleanUp40.exe

Now that you are clean, please follow these steps in order to keep your computer safe and secure:

How did I get infected?, With steps so it does not happen again!
Simple and easy ways to keep your computer safe and secure on the Internet
