I got hit with Trojan.Vundo.H yesterday... after using SEVERAL different anti-malware programs I think I might've finally cleansed myself of it. It hasn't popped up in a few hours, but that wouldn't be the first time since this computer nightmare began. However, I did notice one thing:

Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware 1.30

Windows 5.1.2600 Service Pack 2

No matter what I do, I can't get rid of that issue in the bold. It's connected to my computer trying to start up "heremade.dll" at startup, one of the DLL files that was quarantined and deleted earlier by Malwarebytes, and now everytime I start up my computer I get the error message that it can't start up heremade.dll. Trying to uncheck the startup start of heremade.dll in msconfig defaults back to checking it back on, and even going into regedit to try and manually remove the Trojan.Agent registry fails as it regenerates. It may not be a major issue, or it could be a reason that Vundo might show back up again. Any help with this matter is greatly appreciated.

Hello Comradebot,

Sorry for the delay. We have many logs backed up.

I see Viewpoint installed.
Viewpoint Manager is considered as foistware instead of malware since it is installed without users approval but doesn't spy or do anything "bad".

This will change from what we know in 2006 read this article: http://www.clickz.com/news/article.php/3561546

I suggest you remove the program now, if you did not install it.

Go to Start > Settings > Control Panel > Add/Remove Programs and remove the following programs if present.

Viewpoint
Viewpoint Manager
Viewpoint Media Player

If you uninstalled, please navigate to and delete the following folders
C:\Program Files\Viewpoint

Your Java is out of date. Older versions have vulnerabilities that malware can use to infect your system. Please follow these steps to remove older version Java components and update.

Updating Java:
  • Download the latest version of Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 6 Update 10.
  • Scroll down to where it says "Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 6 Update 10".
  • Click the "Download" button to the right.
  • Check the box that says: "Accept License Agreement".
  • The page will refresh.
  • Click on the link to download Windows Offline Installation, Multi-language jre-6u10-windows-i586.exe and save to your desktop.
  • Close any programs you may have running - especially your web browser.
  • Go to Start > Control Panel double-click on Add/Remove programs and remove all older versions of Java.
Examples of older versions in Add or Remove Programs:
Java 2 Runtime Environment, SE v1.4.2
    J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0
    J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0 Update 6
  • Check any item with Java Runtime Environment (JRE or J2SE) in the name.
  • Click the Remove or Change/Remove button.
  • Repeat as many times as necessary to remove each Java versions.
  • Reboot your computer once all Java components are removed.
  • Then from your desktop double-click on jre-6u10-windows-i586-p.exe to install the newest version.

Please disable any running anti-virus program before running Kaspersky Online Scanner.
If you are unsure how to do this, see this topic: http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/t/114351/how-to-temporarily-disable-your-anti-virus-firewall-and-anti-malware-programs/
Close any open browsers

Please do a scan with Kaspersky Online Scanner

You can refer to this animation by sundavis.

Note: If you are using Windows Vista, open your browser by right-clicking on its icon and select 'Run as administrator' to perform this scan.

Click on the Accept button and install any components it needs.
  • The program will install and then begin downloading the latest definition files.
  • After the files have been downloaded on the left side of the page in the Scan section select My Computer.
  • This will start the program and scan your system.
  • The scan will take a while, so be patient and let it run.
  • Once the scan is complete, click on View scan report
  • Now, click on the Save Report as button.
  • In the drop down box labeled Files of type change the type to Text file.
  • Save the file to your desktop.
  • Copy and paste that information in your next post.
This scanner will only scan. It does not remove any malware it finds.

Download and Run RSIT
  • Download random's system information tool (RSIT) by random/random from here and save it to your desktop.
  • Double click on RSIT.exe to run RSIT.
  • Select Files and Folders created in last 1 month

Is your Norton Anvtivirus outdated? If so, please update it. If it has expired, then let me know and we can install a free antivirus.

You are still infected, so we will run ComboFix.

You should NOT use Combofix unless you have been instructed to do so by a Malware Removal Expert.
It is intended by its creator to be used under the guidance and supervision of an Malware Removal Expert, not for private use.

Using this tool incorrectly could lead to disastrous problems with your operating system such as preventing it from ever starting again.

You need to disable your Antivirus and Spybot Teatimer before running ComboFix, as they will prevent it from running.

Please visit this webpage for instructions for downloading and running ComboFix:
http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/combofix/how-to-use-combofix

To work properly, you must install ComboFix on the Desktop.

When following the instructions install the Windows XP Recovery Console if you are using XP.

We will run ComboFix©.

Please read  Combofix's Disclaimer.
Further, ComboFix logs are not permitted outside the HijackThis forums and then only when requested by a HJT Team member.

You need to disable your Antivirus and Spybot Teatimer before running ComboFix, as they will prevent it from running.

To disable Norton Antivirus:
Please navigate to the system tray on the bottom right hand corner and look for a Posted Image sign.
  • right-click it -> chose "Disable Auto-Protect."
  • select a duration of 5 hours (this assures no interference with the cleanup of your pc)
  • click "Ok."
  • a popup will warn that protection will now be disabled and the sign will now look like this: Posted Image
You succesfully disabled the Norton Antivirus Guard.

Note: If you already have a copy of ComboFix on your system it is essential that you delete it before downloading this copy.

<== IMPORTANT
It is a simple procedure that will only take a few moments of your time. It is our safety net.

You DO NOT need to have the Windows CD to install Recovery Console!

Once installed, you should see a blue screen prompt that says:

The Recovery Console was successfully installed.

We need Recovery Console because malware damages a lot and causes an instable system - and because of that, it may happen that your computer won't be able to boot anymore. With the Recovery Console installed, there are extra options present to repair whatever malware damaged.
Also, even though you're not infected, the presence of the Recovery Console is a useful feature in case a computer won't boot anymore because of several other reasons. Read  here   what you can do with the Recovery Console.

Extra note: After you have installed the Recovery Console - if you reboot your computer, right after reboot, you'll see the option for the Recovery Console now as well.
Don't select to run the Recovery Console as we don't need it.
By default, your main OS is selected there. The screen stays for 2 seconds and then it proceeds to load Windows.

[color="red"]A caution -

Have no other programs running. Your Task Bar should be clear of any program entries including your Browser.
Do not run Combofix more than once.
Do not touch your mouse/keyboard until the scan has completed, as this may cause the process to stall or your computer to lock. The scan will temporarily disable your desktop, and if interrupted may leave your desktop disabled. If this occurs, please reboot to restore the desktop. Even when ComboFix appears to be doing nothing, look at your Drive light. If it is flashing, Combofix is still at work.

Post the [b]ComboFix log

1. Yes, Norton is expired

2. You COMPLETELY lost me on the whole Recovery Console thing, and I'm now terrified that I'm about to fry my computer.

Hi Comradebot,

1. Yes, Norton is expired

And thats the reason you are now infected.

You need to install an antivirus program as soon as you can and run a complete scan of the computer.

I recommend you download the free

Avast or
AntiVir or
AVG antivirus

Products from all three vendors received the Virus Bulletin's VB100% award and certification for virus detection from ICSA Labs.

Never install more than one antivirus scanner or firewall on your system! Several together can give you problems and decrease the reliability of it seriously!

AVAST Home Edition User Guide
http://www.avast.com/eng/download-avast-home.html

Alvira AntiVir User Manual
http://www.free-av.com/en/documentation/index.html

AVG antivirus User Manual
http://free.avg.com/ww.download?prd=afe#tba3

After your install and run the antivirus, please post a fresh Hijackthis log.

2. You COMPLETELY lost me on the whole Recovery Console thing, and I'm now terrified that I'm about to fry my computer.

After you install and run an antivirus and post a fresh Hiajackthis log I will post another way to run Combofix that is more easier for you to follow. Not to worry. :)

ComboFix is a powerful tool and is NOT to run on your own. It is safe when run under supervision of a malware professional.

Okay, I figured out the Recovery Console and how to run Combofix. Go me.
Either I'm as smart as people keep telling me I am and I figured out how to insure I didn't kill my computer, or I'm some hybrid of foolhardy and lucky. I'm leaning towards the latter. HOWEVER, that damned registry? It's GONE!!!!!!!!!!!!

And I'll download Avast, since it reminds me of pirates... and how doesn't love pirates?

And after I install/update/scan with Avast, I'll post its results and another HJT log, but honestly Mr. Sifu (after the ants?), I think you've managed to help me cure this insufferable trojan.

Hi Comradebot,

Close/disable all anti virus and anti malware programs so they do not interfere with the running of ComboFix.

If you are unsure how to do this, see this topic: http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/t/114351/how-to-temporarily-disable-your-anti-virus-firewall-and-anti-malware-programs/

Click Start, then Run and type Notepad and click OK.
Open notepad - don't use any other text editor than notepad or the script will fail.
Copy/paste the text in the code box below into notepad:

File::
c:\windows\system32\jituwuwa.dll.tmp
c:\windows\system32\disidaji.dll.tmp
c:\windows\system32\danuzihi.dll.tmp

Registry::
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\software\microsoft\security center]
"UpdatesDisableNotify"=dword:00000000

Name the Notepad file CFScript.txt and Save it to your desktop.

IMPORTANT: The above script was written specifically for this infection on this person's computer. It is NOT to be used on another computer, as it may cause damage that could result in a format!

Then drag the CFScript into ComboFix.exe as you see in the screenshot below.

This will start ComboFix again. After reboot, (in case it asks to reboot), post the contents of Combofix.txt in your next reply together with a new HijackThis log.
