I'm not sure if it virus related so I posted the log anyway just in case... all I know is recently whenever I try to download anything... it usually stops after a certain amount of time (no more than a minute or two)... only if the files arent that big (usually around 5MB or under) will the downloads usually work... anything of size... the downloads usually stop after a short period of time...

We have two deskptops hooked up to a Belkin Wireless G router and a modem.....

Hello and welcome to Bleeping Computer

We apologize for the delay in responding to your request for help. Here at Bleeping Computer we get overwhelmed at times, and we are trying our best to keep up. Please note that your topic was not intentionally overlooked. Our mission is to help everyone in need, but sometimes it takes just a little longer to get to every request for help.

If you have since resolved the original problem you were having, we would appreciate you letting us know. If not please perform the following steps below so we can have a look at the current condition of your machine. If you have not done so, include a description of your problem, along with any steps you may have performed so far.

Upon completing the steps below a staff member will review and take the steps necessary with you to get your machine back in working order clean and free of malware.

Thanks and again sorry for the delay.

We need to see some information about what is happening in your machine. Please perform the following scan:
  • Download DDS by sUBs from one of the following links. Save it to your desktop.
  • Double click on the DDS icon, allow it to run.
  • A small box will open, with an explaination about the tool. No input is needed, the scan is running.
  • Notepad will open with the results, click no to the Optional_Scan
  • Follow the instructions that pop up for posting the results.
  • Close the program window, and delete the program from your desktop.
Please note: You may have to disable any script protection running if the scan fails to run. After downloading the tool, disconnect from the internet and disable all antivirus protection. Run the scan, enable your A/V and reconnect to the internet. Information on A/V control HERE

Hi there,

sorry for the slight delay. With Christmas and all, its been a bit chaotic. Hope you had a good Christmas by the way.

Your log(s) show that you are using so called peer-to-peer or file-sharing programmes (in your case Ares, Bearshare, Bitorrent, LimeWire). These programmes allow to share files between users as the name(s) suggest. In today's world the cyber crime has come to an enormous dimension and any means is used to infect personal computers to make use of their stored data or machine power for further propagation of the malware files. A popular means is the use of file-sharing tools as a tremendous amount of prospective victims can be reached through it.

It is therefore possible to be infected by downloading manipulated files via peer-to-peer tools and thus suggested to be used with intense care. Some further readings on this subject, along the included links, are as follows: "File-Sharing, otherwise known as Peer To Peer" and "Risks of File-Sharing Technology."

It is also important to note that sharing entertainment files and proprietary software infringes the copyright laws in many countries over the world and you are putting yourself at risk of being indicted through organisations watching over the rights of the authors of such files (i.e. the RIAA for music files, or the MPAA for movie files in the USA) or the authors of the files themselves.

Naturally there are also legal ways to use these services, such as downloading Linux distributions or office suites such as "Open Office."

Viewpoint Manager is considered as foistware instead of malware since it is installed without users approval but doesn't spy or do anything "bad". This changed from what we know in 2006 read this article: http://www.clickz.com/news/article.php/3561546

I suggest you remove the program now. Click on start > run > and then paste the following into the "open" field: appwiz.cpl and press OK. From within Add or Remove Programs uninstall the following if they exist: Viewpoint, Viewpoint Manager, Viewpoint Media Player.

I can see some of your infection already. To do a bit more digging, please do the following:

Step #1

* Clean your Cache and Cookies in InternetExplorer:
  • Close all instances of Outlook Express and Internet Explorer
  • Go to Control Panel > Internet Options > General tab
  • Click the "Delete Cookies" button
  • Next to it, Click the "Delete Files" button
  • When prompted, place a check in: "Delete all offline content", click OK
* Clean your Cache and Cookies in Firefox (In case you also have Firefox installed):
  • Go to Tools > Options.
  • Click Privacy in the menu on the left side of the Options window.
  • Click the Clear button located to the right of each option (History, Cookies, Cache).
  • Click OK to close the Options window
Alternatively, you can clear all information stored while browsing by clicking Clear All.
A confirmation dialog box will be shown before clearing the information.
* Clean other Temporary files + Recycle bin
  • Go to start > run and type: cleanmgr and click ok.
  • Let it scan your system for files to remove.
  • Make sure Temporary Files, Temporary Internet Files, and Recycle Bin are the only things checked.
  • Press OK to remove them.
Step #2

Your Java is out of date. Older versions have vulnerabilities that malicious sites can use to exploit and infect your system. Please follow these steps to remove older version Java components and update:
  • Download the latest version of Java Runtime Environment (JRE) Version 6 and save it to your desktop.
  • Scroll down to where it says "Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 6 Update 11...allows end-users to run Java applications".
  • Click the "Download" button to the right.
  • Select your Platform: "Windows".
  • Select your Language: "Multi-language".
  • Read the License Agreement, and then check the box that says: "Accept License Agreement".
  • Click Continue and the page will refresh.
  • Click on the link to download Windows Offline Installation and save the file to your desktop.
  • Close any programs you may have running - especially your web browser.
  • Go to Start > Settings > Control Panel, double-click on Add/Remove Programs and remove all older versions of Java.
  • Check (highlight) any item with Java Runtime Environment (JRE or J2SE) in the name.
  • Click the Remove or Change/Remove button.
  • Repeat as many times as necessary to remove each Java versions.
  • Reboot your computer once all Java components are removed.
  • Then from your desktop double-click on jre-6u11-windows-i586-p.exe to install the newest version.
Step #3

Download OTViewIt to your desktop.
  • Close all windows and double click OTViewIt
  • Place a tick in the Scan all Users box
  • In the File Age drop down box select 90 days
  • Click Run Scan and let the program run uninterrupted
  • On completion it will produce two logs on the Desktop, post the OTViewIt.txt and Extras.txt logs in your next post.
Thanks for posting back with the required logs.

YoHi.

I did everything you posted in your previous post ... but when I tried to run OTViewIt, the program would scan and then it would incur some type of error and the scan would stop....

Hi there,

could you provide the actual error message or a screenshot of the error? That would help analyse the problem and if necessary contact the developer. Thanks!

Once we got that, could you try running this programme instead of OTViewIT:
  • Please download random's system information tool (RSIT) by random/random from here and save it to your desktop.
  • Double click on RSIT.exe to run RSIT.
  • Click Continue at the disclaimer screen.
  • Once it has finished, two logs will open. Please post the contents of both log.txt (<<will be maximized) and info.txt (<<will be minimized)
Thanks!

Hi Chillin662,

sorry for the very long delay. Unfortunately I was sick over the better part of my extended weekend  .

Step #1

I do not recommend that you have more than one anti virus product installed and running on your computer at a time. The reason for this is that if both products have their automatic (Real-Time) protection switched on, then those products which do not encrypt the virus strings within them can cause other anti virus products to cause "false alarms". It can also lead to a clash as both products fight for access to files which are opened again this is the resident/automatic protection. In general terms, the two programs may conflict and cause:
  • False Alarms: When the anti virus software tells you that your PC has a virus when it actually doesn't.
  • System Performance Problems: Your system may lock up due to both software products attempting to access the same file at the same time.
Therefore please go to add/remove in the control panel and remove either Defender Pro Internet Security 6.0 or AVG8 - if you remove Defender Pro Internet Security 6.0 please understand you will have to install a new Firewall as the Defender Pro Internet Security 6.0 one will have been uninstalled also.

Step #2

I want you to back up the registry, because we are going to make a few changes to it.
To export the registry to a ".reg" file, please follow these steps: (for a complete tutorial, you can also click here).

Backup your Registry with ERUNT
  • Please use the following link and scroll down to ERUNT and download it (with the installer)
    http://aumha.org/freeware/freeware.php
  • Use the setup program to install ERUNT on your computer
  • Click Erunt.exe to backup your registry to the folder of your choice.
Now a secure backup copy has been made, copy the entire contents inside the CODE box below into Notepad.

Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00

[-HKEY_CURRENT_USER\software\microsoft\windows\currentversion\explorer\mountpoints2\J]
[-HKEY_CURRENT_USER\software\microsoft\windows\currentversion\explorer\mountpoints2\K]

Then click File > Save and save as fix.reg (save as type: All files) to the Desktop.
Go to the Desktop and double-click fix.reg. When prompted to merge its contents to the registry, click the Yes button. You may remove the file afterwards.

Step #3

You have Adware on your machine, along with Java versions which are not needed and leave you open to attacks. The adware on your machine can be explained to have the following features: "display ads or can be used for malicious purposes like gathering info on your surfing habits. It also has the functionality to download and install further malicious files from remote servers."

For more information, please see here:

http://www.systemlookup.com/O23/4083-iWinGamesInstaller_exe.html
http://www.threatexpert.com/report.aspx?uid=5a923622-d929-45aa-89c3-94261dd31588

Click on start > run > and then paste the following into the "open" field: appwiz.cpl and press OK. From within Add or Remove Programs uninstall the following if they exist: iWinGames

Then check to see if the following file still exists: "C:\Program Files\iWin Games\iWinGamesInstaller.exe"
When found, please delete it.

Please copy and paste the following text into Notepad:

sc stop iWinGamesInstaller
sc delete iWinGamesInstaller
del services.bat

Save this as "services.bat" Choose to save as *all files and place it on your Desktop.
Double-click services.bat. Soon it should disappear from your Desktop; this is fine.

Step #3

Please go to Eset Onlinescan (NOD32)
(You need to use InternetExplorer or enable IEView in Firefox)
  • You will then see the Terms of Use, tick the check-box infront of YES, I accept the Terms of Use
  • Now click Start
  • Should you face a Security Warning that asks if you want to install and run a file called "OnlineScanner.cab", click Yes
  • Click Start (the Onlinescanner will now prepare itself for running on your pc)
  • To do a full-scan, tick: "Remove found threats" and "Scan potentially unwanted applications"
  • Press Scan
  • The Onlinescan will now start and scan your pc (this could take a while)
  • When the scan has finished, it will show a screen with two tabs "overview" and "details" and the option to get information or buy software, just close the window
  • Click Start >> Run... >> type: C:\Program Files\EsetOnlineScanner\log.txt
  • The Scanresults will now open in Notepad
    • Click into the text area, right-click and chose "select all" (or use ctrl+a)
    • Right-click again and chose "copy" (or ctrl+c)
    • Close Notepad
  • Navigate to this thread and post your log along with anything else requested from us, by right-clicking and "paste" (or ctrl+v) in the text area of the reply post you just created.
Note for Vista Users: Eset is compatible but Internet Explorer must be run as Administrator. To do this, right-click on the IE icon in the Start Menu or Quick Launch Bar on the Taskbar and select "Run as Administrator" from the context menu.)

Thanks for posting back all required logs.
