Hi All,

I am new to the group and am about to go crazy trying to figure out why I keep getting the "Setup.exe has encountered a problem and needs to close" when trying to install the newest maps that I just purchased and downloaded from Garmin for my GPS unit. My Garmin StreetPilot c550 attaches to my PC via USB and the connection is good as I was able to update the system software as well as install some other add-ons. The problem I am having is installing the new current Map that I purchased for $70.00 and downloaded. The downloaded file is self-extracting and is 2 gig prior to extracting. The file extracts O.K. and then up completion of the extraction, it immediately goes into the setup phase, then asks me for my product (which I enter) and then after it accepts the product key and starts the install, I get the dreaded "Setup.exe......." message. Any ideas as to what might be causing it??

Thanks,

Matt

Look in the Event Viewer and see what errors are showing up at the time that this is happening. Each error will have its own date and time shown.

Start> right click on My Computer> Manage> Event Viewer.

On the right side of the page you will see the options Applications, Security, and Systems, double click on Systems. There are eight columns on this page, the three that you will want are Type, Date, Time, and Event.

The errors will appear in the Type column, they are red dots with a white X inside of them.

Warnings will appear as a yellow trinangle with an exclamation mark inside.

When you see an error, double click on it and see what the description is.

Please post the error code/s found in the Event column and the descriptions back in this topic.

Family and loved ones will always be a priority in my daily life.  You never know when one will leave you.

dc3,

I very much appreciate the reply. These events do not show up under system, but rather under "Application" events. Event Codes are "1000"

Have you checked for any updates for the Garmin?

In all honesty, if I just spent $70 I'd be all over their support site

I called their tech support today and it does not appear to be a known issue with install. I am going over to a buddy's house tonight to use his PC to download and install from and see if I get the same error message. If I do, then most likely problem is with their file; if I don't then problem is likely to be my machine.

Well, went to my buddy's house and downloaded the file onto his machine and exracted the file and it installed the new map to my Garmin without a hitch. The source of the problem is definitley my PC.
