Hello GeoffADSL,

We need to disable your Windows Defender Real-time Protection as it may interfere with the fixes that we need to make.
  • Open Windows Defender.
  • Click on Tools, General Settings.
  • Scroll down and uncheck Turn on real-time protection (recommended).
  • After you uncheck this, click on the Save button and close Windows Defender.
After all of the fixes are complete it is very important that you enable Real-time Protection again.

Please download Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware from Here or Here

Double Click mbam-setup.exe to install the application.
Make sure a checkmark is placed next to Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware, then click Finish.
If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
Once the program has loaded, select "Perform Full Scan", then click Scan.
The scan may take some time to finish, so please be patient.
When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
Make sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
When disinfection is completed, a log will open in Notepad and you may be prompted to Restart. (See Extra Note)
The log is automatically saved by MBAM and can be viewed by clicking the Logs tab in MBAM.

Copy and Paste the entire Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware report in your next reply along with a fresh HijackThis log.

Extra Note:
If MBAM encounters a file that is difficult to remove, you will be presented with 1 of 2 prompts, click OK to either and let MBAM proceed with the disinfection process, if asked to restart the computer, please do so immediatly.

If you encounter this message:"c:\program files\malwarebytes' Anti-Malware\mbamext.dll Unable to register the dll/ocx: RegSvr32 failed with exit code 0x5" Click on ignore mbamext.dll

Hi there,
thanks for the advice - however I've reformatted the hard drive already in frustration and in process of re-installing data files.
Will advise if anything presents itself on the new installation.
As an aside, I had run Malwarebytes AntiMalware (up to and including database version 1429) many times while waiting for advice - no suspicious files found.
This in both normal mode and in safe mode.
The same from Spyware Doctor and Windows Defender itself.
Avast has run 3 full system scans, and nothing discovered there either.

In the end, it just got too annoying so a clean slate approach was adopted.
I'd be interested in any general advice however - and on the failure of all anti-virus/anti-malware scanners to detect anything.

You choice of a reformat and reload was a little extreme, and is usually reserved as a the last resort; however, but in some rare cases it is necessary.

The infection you had on your computer could have been removed quite easily with some of our tools.

As for the anti-virus/anti-malware not detecting anything, you have only run several of them. They (the antivirus and antimalware tools) do not detect all the malware that is out there, only some of it. If there was a perfect antivirus and antimalware tool then we would all have it.
We have many other ways we can see malware besides running antivirus and antimalware tools.
