Hi

I am in the process of builing a new pc. I had an older one I bought from a freind (mother board and cpu and ram) I couldnt get it to work( he had it not in use for a while).
So he felt bad and bought me a brand new MB and gave me another cpu

Well I finally put it all together last night and am having big problems. just like before. the monitor doesnt show a screen. its just black. I heard the hard drive and the dvd light comes on but nothing shows.

Its athalon 2 gig with 1 gig memory and a ati 9200 radeon video card

Ive tried with 3 montiors including the one I am useing now. and I get nothing.

Any Ideas?

Thanks

Dear Delw,

At this point it could be anything.

Please tell us more about the case, power supply, OS, hard drives and such?

When building a new computer with old/new parts you can run into many issues.

Even if you build a computer with all new parts you will run into issues.

Give us step by step detail and we will step by step lead you to a great computer.

Pretty much everything is new, case everything.

I disconnected everything except the vid card mem and cpu. boooted up and nothing, including all jumpers to the case Power led hdd led etc. only leaving power swtich on.

went into the shop and grabbed 5 vga video cards 3 I know for sure work.

Nothing, the monitors are not getting sigals.
tried a differnet case and power supply nothing.
tried another cpu nothing

So now I am pretty lost.

I dont think 2 mother boards could be bad. but maybe they could the first one was used the second is brand new.

both cpus are used. both athalons one is a 2gig and the other a 1.2 gig.
the 1 gig mem chip is used however I should still get the screen to come up with a bad mem chip.

I am just curious of someone else has had a similar problem

I tried my daughters compac monitor as well and I dont get a signal from the pc to monitor light stays yellow.

I am wondering if there is a jumper or something I am missing

That depends on how bad it is. If the RAM stick is completely cactus you wont get anything on the screen because the mobo will halt having failed to initialise.

Swap that out with something else to see.

Dear Delw,

This is a connection problem or something is not new. Are you using new cables as well?

I had a problem with my HD's with bad cables.

In my building quests I have found that it is something easy that I missed.

I had a problem with my power supply once that sent me around the world, only to find out it did not have enough wattage.

Compatibility is the thorn in all computer builders side.

Tell me more about your mother board? Your power supply? Your cables?

Have you used ESD precautions?

Relax. You are like me, want it now! We will find the problem.

Let us help you,
