... that is, I've looked at Help, regular and advanced, and still get ...
"Sorry, an error occurred. If you are unsure on how to use a feature, or don't know why you got this error message, try looking through the help files for more information."

For advanced search I've used "key phrase in quotes" yet still get that message. I ask because I've seen BC's coverage of a topic I want via search engines, but if I login normally, search returns that error.

Specific topic of using sfc.exe to Repair System Files.

(I'm not asking for link, but how to find it using Search.) I assume there's a way, that I'm overlooking something simple, or perhaps some indexing needs to be turned on at your site. But if you can find the syntax to work, I'd appreciate seeing an orientation topic I can refer to from time to time.

Welcome to BC
The Search function for the board's software is lame at best.
I have better luck searching Google with the term I want and add Bleeping Computer in the searchbox

For example, if you want to do a google search for "taco" on "Bleepingcomputer.com";

enter in the google search box... taco site:bleepingcomputer.com
