Can you boot in safe mode? If you are not sure how to boot in Safe Mode there is a tutorial here: Safe Mode
If you can bring up a command window (Start>Run) and type "sfc /scannow" without quotes. This will check for corruptions in system files. Yo may be asked for the path to the Windows XP CD (if you have XP). If you have the CD put it in your CDROM drive. If you don't have the CD look for the folder C:\i386 and point sfc there. If you don't have an i386 folder then so far as i know you're out of luck with sfc.
