Posted 19 November 2008 - 08:06 AM

Surfing the net I clicked on a link and suddenly my computer just shut down as if I had done it myself. After booting up again I did a virus scan and found BITDEFENDER 1400 threats related to rootkits. Now after having scanned maybe 10 times it is saying 1900. Scary. It appears that BITDEFENDER only un-hides these items but cannot do anything with them. My computer still does odd things. Sometimes it does not load all programs at startup, sometimes it wont shut down, sometimes I get an error message with an IE script error, asking if I want to continue to run scripts on this page. I did a scan with a Rescue CD from BITDEFENDER as well it came up with nothing. I went through the steps that you asked before posting this file.Thankyou very much for your help

Would there be anyone who could please take a look at this hijack log. My computer is doing the strangest things. Today it suddenly started to configure a bluetooth network, then it shut down again. It also displays a error message asking if I want to run scripts on the main page of Explorer. I have tried to clean it and suddenly it has started to say that there are 1400 something files that cannot be scanned as they are protected by password. I am quite worried as I am not in my country and cannot close down my bank account. Regards Mustardseed

PS I just saw that it says I should not bump the message I am not sure if that is what I am doing by posting again, if so then sorry I guess I screwed up then. I am just about ready to toss this thing overboard.

Hello, Mustardseed
I took care of those other two errant threads :)

 to BleepingComputer.com

My name is Billy O'Neal and I will be helping you. (Billy or Bill is fine, if you like.)
Please give me some time to look over your computer's log(s).
Please take note of the following:
  • In the meantime, please refrain from making any changes to your computer.
  • Also, even if things appear to be running better, there is no guarantee that everything is finished. Please continue to check this forum post in order to ensure we get your system completely clean. We do not want to clean you part-way up, only to have the system re-infect itself. :)
  • If you do not understand any step(s) provided, please do not hesitate to ask before continuing. I would much rather clarify instructions or explain them differently than have something important broken.
  • Finally, please reply using the Posted Image button in the lower left hand corner of your screen.
We need to run a Scan with DDS
  • Please download DDS, and save it to your desktop, from one of the following mirrors:
  • Disable any type of "Script Blockers" or "Script Protection" installed on your system.
  • Double click Posted Image on your desktop.
  • If prompted by any script blocking tools, please allow any actions taken by DDS.
  • When prompted to preform an Optional Scan, please select Posted Image
  • Two reports will open. Please reply with the generated reports:
    • DDS.txt <-- Copy and paste into your next post
    • Attach.txt <-- Attach to your next post
We need to scan for rootkits with GMER
  • Please download gmer.zip and save to your desktop.
  • Unzip/extract the file to its own folder. (Click here for information on how to do this if not sure. Win 2000 users click here.)
  • When you have done this, disconnect from the Internet and close all running programs.
Note: There is a small chance this application may crash your computer so save any work you have open.
  • Double-click on Gmer.exe to start the program.
  • Allow the gmer.sys driver to load if asked.
  • If it gives you a warning at program start about rootkit activity and asks if you want to run a scan...click NO.
  • Click on "Settings", then check the first five settings:
    • System Protection and Tracing
    • Processes
    • Save created processes to the log
    • Drivers
    • Save loaded drivers to the log
  • You will be prompted to restart your computer. Please do so.
  • Run Gmer again and click on the Rootkit tab.
  • Look at the right hand side (under Files) and uncheck all drives with the exception of your C drive.
  • Make sure all other boxes on the right of the screen are checked, EXCEPT for "Show All".
Important! Please do not select the "Show all" checkbox during the scan.
  • Click on the "Scan" and wait for the scan to finish.

The Gmer file is too big to be attached or copied so I have tried to compress it with that program that has some books as the logo here it is. I think that works and hope it is good enough that way. Thanks again Billy I REALLY appreciate your help.

Hello, Mustardseed
We need to execute an OTMoveIt3 script
  • Please download OTMoveIt3 by OldTimer and save it to your desktop.
  • Double click the Posted Image icon on your desktop.
  • Paste the following code under the Posted Image area. Do not include the word "Code".
    :files
    C:\RRbackups
  • Push the large Posted Image button.
  • OTMI3 may ask to reboot the machine. Please do so if asked.
  • Copy/Paste the contents under the Posted Image line here in your next reply.
  • If you are unable to copy/paste from this window (as will be the case if the machine was rebooted), open Notepad (Start->All Programs->Accessories->Notepad), click File->Open, in the File Name box enter *.log and press the Enter key, navigate to the C:\_OTMoveIt\MovedFiles folder, and open the newest .log file present, and copy/paste the contents of that document back here in your next post.
In your next reply, please include the following:
  • OTMoveIt3's Log

There is no log. As I did the above the display on the right side said the move had failed. After the reboot I got this in notepad:

========== FILES ==========
Folder move failed. C:\RRbackups scheduled to be moved on reboot.

OTMoveIt3 by OldTimer - Version 1.0.7.1 log created on 11272008_124846

Files moved on Reboot...
Folder move failed. C:\RRbackups scheduled to be moved on reboot.

Just now I tried again and the display on the right under results says:

========== FILES ==========
Folder move failed. C:\RRbackups scheduled to be moved on reboot.

OTMoveIt3 by OldTimer - Version 1.0.7.1 log created on 11272008_125913

Hello, Mustardseed
Alright.. please take another log with GMER.

I rewrote my instructions for running it because people were having trouble following the old ones. Please let me know if these are better.

We need to scan for Rootkits with GMER
  • Please download GMER from one of the following mirrors:
  • Close any and all open programs, as this process may crash your computer.
  • Unzip the downloaded file to your desktop.
  • Double click Posted Image on your desktop.
  • Allow the gmer.sys driver to load if asked.
  • You may see this window. If you do, click No.
    Posted Image
  • Click on Posted Image and wait for the scan to finish.
  • If you see a rootkit warning window, click OK.
  • Push Posted Image and save the logfile to your desktop.
  • Copy and Paste the contents of that file in your next post.
In your next reply, please include the following:
  • GMER's Log

Billy , you have NO idea of what a relief your posts are. I actually understand what you want me to do because you use visuals rather than explanations. It is very easy and straight forward. If I can follow the instructions ANYONE can.

Hello, Mustardseed
Well thank you :D

Your Java is out of date. Older versions have vulnerabilities that malicious sites can use to exploit and infect your system. Please follow these steps to remove older version Java components and update:
  • Download the latest version of Java Runtime Environment (JRE) Version 6 and save it to your desktop.
  • Scroll down to where it says "Java Runtime Environment (JRE)6 Update 10...allows end-users to run Java applications".
  • Click the "Download" button to the right.
  • Select your Platform: "Windows" (OR if you are on a x64 system, "Windows x64")
  • Select your Language: "Multi-Language".
  • Read the License Agreement, and then check the box that says: "Accept License Agreement".
  • Click Continue and the page will refresh.
  • Click on the link to download Windows Offline Installation and save the file to your desktop.
  • Close any programs you may have running - especially your web browser.
  • Go to Start > Settings > Control Panel, double-click on Add/Remove Programs (Or "Uninstall a Program" on Vista) and remove all older versions of Java.
  • Check (highlight) any item with Java Runtime Environment (JRE or J2SE) in the name.
  • Click the Remove or Change/Remove button.
  • Follow the onscreen instructions for the Java uninstaller.
  • Repeat as many times as necessary to remove each Java version.
  • Reboot your computer once all Java components are removed.
  • Then from your desktop double-click on jre-6u10-windows-i586-p.exe (Or jre-6u10-windows-x64.exe for x64 systems)
  • Follow the on screen instructions to install the latest Java version.
I would like us to use ESET (NOD32)'s Online Scanner
  • Please go to ESET OnlineScan (NOD32)
  • You will then see the Terms of Use, tick the check-box infront of YES, I accept the Terms of Use
  • Now click Start
  • Should you face a Security Warning that asks if you want to install and run a file called "OnlineScanner.cab", click Yes
  • Click Start
    • Note: (the Onlinescanner will now prepare itself for running on your pc)
  • To do a full-scan, tick: "Remove found threats" and "Scan potentially unwanted applications"
  • Press Scan
  • The Onlinescan will now start and scan your pc (this could take a while)
  • When the scan has finished, it will show a screen with two tabs "overview" and "details" and the option to get information or buy software, just close the window
  • Click Start >> Run... >> type: C:\Program Files\EsetOnlineScanner\log.txt
  • The Scanresults will now open in Notepad
  • Click into the text area, right-click and chose "select all" (or use +A)
  • Right-click again and chose "Copy" (or +C)
  • Close/Exit Notepad
  • Navigate to this thread and post your log along with anything else requested from us, by right-clicking and "paste" (or ctrl+v) in the text area of the reply post you just created.
Note: For Vista Users: Eset is compatible but Internet Explorer must be run as Administrator. To do this, right-click on the IE icon in the Start Menu or Quick Launch Bar on the Taskbar and select "Run as Administrator" from the context menu.)

You Need to Update Windows (And other Microsoft Software)
Often holes are found in Internet Explorer or Windows itself that require patching. Sometimes these holes will allow an attacker unrestricted access to your computer.

If you are using Windows XP or earlier
Visit the Microsoft Update Website and follow the on screen instructions to setup Microsoft Update. Also follow the instructions to update your system. Please REBOOT and repeat this process until there are no more updates to install!!

If you are using Windows Vista
  • Click the "Start Menu" (or Windows Orb)
  • Click "All Programs"
  • Click "Windows Update"
  • On the left, choose "Change Settings"
  • Ensure that the checkbox "Use Microsoft Update" at the bottom of the window is checked.
  • Press OK and accept the UAC prompt.
Note: You shouldn't need to check this checkbox every single time you update, only the first time.
  • Click "Check for Updates" in the upper left corner.
  • Follow the instructions to install the latest updates.
  • Reboot and repeat the "Check for Updates" until there are no more critical updates to install
In your next reply, please include the following:
  • ESET OnlineScan's Log
  • A New HiJack This log

A few observations Billy. When I was running the scan my Bitdefender also seemed to scan as if it was using bitdefender. During that process Bitdefender found a virus a trojan.Generic.25342. It appears in the Bitdefender log under this name.

Earlier I had turned off the windows update as the service pack 3 had given me some problems making the computer run very slow. I have now turned on the update. I think I also might have had the java blocked with my firewall. Should I empty all the rules in the firewall and start again. I can send you a screen shot if you think I might have something blocked that should not be blocked. Here are the logs:

Hello, Mustardseed
I'm honestly not sure what's causing your other problems, though I suspect it is caused by BitDefender itself. The other logs you've posted have been clean.

How are things running?

We have to remove some entries in HiJack This
  • Please re-open HiJackThis and choose do a system scan only. Check the boxes next to ONLY the entries listed below:
    O4 - Global Startup: Bluetooth.lnk = ?
    O4 - Global Startup: PGPtray.lnk = ?
    O20 - Winlogon Notify: ACNotify - ACNotify.dll (file missing)
    O20 - Winlogon Notify: MsMsgSrv - MsMsgSrv.DLL (file missing)
  • Close all windows other than HiJackThis, including browsers, so that nothing other than HijackThis is open, then click Fix Checked. A box will pop up asking you if you wish to fix the selected items. Please choose YES. Once it has fixed them, please exit/close HijackThis.
We need to repair some of windows' internal registration settings
  • Please download Dial-A-Fix from one of the following mirrors:
  • Extract the zip file to your desktop.
  • Double click Dial-a-Fix.exe to start the program.
  • Press the green double checkmark box (Looks like this: Posted Image)
  • UNcheck "Empty Temp Folders", as well as "Adjust Time/Date" in the prep section. The prep section should then look like this:

  • When the window looks like this, press the GO button in the bottom of the window.

  • Exit/Close Dial-A-Fix
Now please try windows update again and let me know how it goes (Dial a fix may help that)
