I was recently infected with the smitfraud virus, and used a guide from another forum on this site to restore my desktop to normal. However, I am still getting annoying icons on my desktop that keep reappearing, and am continually re-directed to extremely offensive websites. I have been unable to determine the problem, so here is my log, and if you guys find anything out of the ordinary, please let me know.

My Log:

Print out these instructions and then close all windows including Internet Explorer.

Then I want you to fix some of those entries. Please do the following:

Please make sure that you can view all hidden files. Instructions on how to do this can be found here:

How to see hidden files in Windows

Run Hijackthis again, click scan, and Put a checkmark next to each of these. Then click the Fix button:

R0 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Start Page = http://www.newgenlook.info/ad/ad0058/

Reboot your computer and post a new log.

Download http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/files/pfind.php

Extract pfind.zip to your c:\ folder.

Reboot your computer into Safe Mode

Then open c:\pfind and double-click on pfind.bat. When it is done, reboot and post the contents of c:\pfind.txt as a reply to this topic.

Looks clean to me. Can you stop using this program and see if the popups go away? There were rumours of a illegitimate version floating around.

No, I was having these problems before I installed BitTorrent. It is looking like I am gonna have to wipe the drive and start from scratch.

No we are not done yet.

Download Silentrunners.zip from http://www.silentrunners.org/

Run the SilentRunners.vbs file. If your antivirus has a script blocker, you will get a warning asking if you want to allow SilentRunners.vbs to run. It might say something like "Malicious Script Warning". This script is not malicious so you are safe in allowing it to run.

When it has finished it will produce a Startup Programs text file. Copy and paste that text file here in your next reply.
