Atmpvc.dll trojan problem

Hey, today Norton AntiVirus started popping up a virus alert whenever I open IE. It says there's a trojan in the file C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\ATMPVC.DLL. It can't fix or remove the file, and neither did AdAware nor SpyBot. Can anyone please help me with this?

Hello trekman47 and welcome to the BC forums. After reviewing your log I see a few items that require our attention. Please print these directions and then proceed with the following steps in order.

Step #1

Download CCleaner and install it but do not run it yet.

Download and install ewido security suite. Update the program and then close it. Do not run it yet.

Step #2

Open Notepad and copy/paste the text in the quotebox below into the new document:

Save the document to your desktop as delfiles.bat and close Notepad.

Step #3

Start in Safe Mode Using the F8 method:
  • Restart the computer.
  • As soon as the BIOS is loaded begin tapping the F8 key until the boot menu appears.
  • Use the arrow keys to select the Safe Mode menu item.
  • Press the Enter key.
Step #4

Start HijackThis and click the Scan button to perform a scan. Look for the following items and click in the checkbox in front of each item to select it:O2 - BHO: C:\WINDOWS\system32\miamores.dll - {0393FE81-0BBD-4BCE-B4F2-C643AA7D77DD} - C:\WINDOWS\system32\miamores.dll

Now close ALL open windows except HijackThis and click the Fix Checked button to finish the repair.

Step #5

Start ewido and click the Scanner button and then click the Start button. Let it run to completion and fix everything it finds.

Step #6

Locate the delfiles.bat file on your desktop and double-click on it to run it.

Step #7

Start CCleaner and click on the Run Cleaner button in the lower right-hand corner. When it is finished close CCleaner.

Step #8

OK. Reboot your computer normally, start HijackThis and perform a new scan. Use the Add Reply button to post your new log file back here along with details of any problems you encountered performing the above steps and I will review it when it comes in.

I am curious about another file so I would like you to have it scanned. Go to the Jotti's malware scan page and use the buttons at the top of the page to browse to this file on your hard drive and submit it for a scan:E:\Setup.exe
Several scanning engines will be used to check the file for any threats. Please post the results of the scans back here.

Thanks for the assistance, OT.

The first 4 steps went smoothly (although i ran HijackThis a second time and noticed that the line 'O20 - ... ... \atmpvc.dll' was still there after fixing it).
Step 5 got about 90% through before the program died and i got one of those windows dialogs asking if i wanted to send an error report. I ran the scan again and it finished and said to restart to complete, so i restarted back into Safe Mode.
When I ran Step 6, i noticed 3 lines in the DOS window before it closed, and at least one was 'file not found'
After that, CCleaner ran fine, I restarted normally, and Norton no longer pops up a trojan warning when I open IE.


The new HJT scan is at the bottom of this post. I noticed that there are still the two lines containing 'atmpvc.dll'; I don't know if this is okay (they have been fixed), or if they shouldn't be there anymore.

Regarding your last concern (E:\Setup.exe), my E: drive is the optical CD/DVD drive, so I don't know what that's doing there.

Hi trekman47. Looking better. Now let's clean up the rest.

Step #1

We need to disable TeaTimer so it does not interfere with the fixes we are about to do.
  • Run Spybot-S&D
  • Go to the Mode menu, and make sure Advanced Mode is selected
  • On the left hand side, choose Tools -> Resident
  • Uncheck Resident TeaTimer and OK any prompts
  • Restart your computer.
Step #2

Start HijackThis and click the Scan button to perform a scan. Look for the following items and click in the checkbox in front of each item to select it:O2 - BHO: (no name) - {0393FE81-0BBD-4BCE-B4F2-C643AA7D77DD} - (no file)

Now close ALL open windows except HijackThis and click the Fix Checked button to finish the repair.

Step #3

Download Cwshredder.exe and save it to a folder of its own. Start the program and click on the Check for Update button. If an update is available then download and install it.

Run CWShredder
  • Double-click on CWShredder.exe.
  • Click "Fix ->" and click "OK" at the prompt.
  • CWShredder will scan and clean your system of CWS files.
  • Click "Next->" and then "Exit".
Step #4

OK. Reboot your computer normally, start HijackThis and perform a new scan. Use the Add Reply button to post your new log file back here along with details of any problems you encountered performing the above steps and I will review it when it comes in.

I didn't see the report from the E:\Setup.exe file so I'm not sure if that needs to be removed or not. Post the results of that scan so I can determine if it needs to be removed or not.

Hi

There is no E:\Setup.exe file; my E:\ drive is the CD drive, so there's nothing there to scan.

Okay, I have a Major problem now: the first 3 steps ran fine, but when I tried to restart in step 4, nothing happened. I couldn't restart, shutdown, logout. The desktop IE, recycle bin, and my computer links didn't open anything and just created shortcuts to themselves. On the start menu, there is no longer the Internet or email links at the top, the My documents and Favourites links don't open, and the my computer link is renamed "folder".

I finally tried a reset, and the computer started up and got up to the Blue Windows XP startup screen right before the Welcome Screen (the one with the usernames). It doesn't get past this point, even in Safe Mode, although the mouse still moves.

If it helps, in step 3 there were no updates, and the cwshredder removed one file; i think the filename ended with ...xplugin, though i'm not completely sure.

Please help ASAP :thumbsup:

Hi trekman47. We've got something hiding in the system that we will need to deal with, but first we have to get the system back up and running. Let's try to perform a System Restore. Doing this can get the system back up but it will alos replace any infections that are stored there so we will have to deal with that once it is restored.

To get into SR we can do that from a Command Prompt. Boot up your computer by doing the following:

Start in Safe Mode with Command Prompt Using the F8 method:
  • Restart the computer.
  • As soon as the BIOS is loaded begin tapping the F8 key until the boot menu appears.
  • Use the arrow keys to select the Safe Mode with Command Prompt menu item.
  • Press the Enter key.
At the command prompt type the following and press the Enter key%systemroot%\system32\restore\rstrui.exe
Follow the on-screen prompts to choose a Restore Point and wait for the restore to complete. Then reboot your computer normally, start HijackThis and perform a new scan. Use the Add Reply button to post your new log file back here along with details of any problems you encountered performing the above steps and I will review it when it comes in.

Hi OT.
No luck, I try to start in Safe Mode with Command Prompt like you indicate, but I never get to the command prompt; again it doesn't get past the blue Windows XP startup screen (it's the one with two darker blue bands along the top and bottom, lighter blue in the centre, and the Windows XP name and symbol off-centre to the right).

I did notice an option on the boot menu for "Last Known Good Configuration," should I try that instead? Or is there another way to do a System Restore? (I don't know if it helps, but I have an XP Home upgrade CD; however, XP Pro is installed on the computer and I don't have access to the XP Pro CD). It's my family's computer, and I don't think many of the files are backed up, so I'd like to minimize data loss if possible.

Hi trekman47. Yes, go ahead and try the 'Last Known Good Configuration'. I don't know if that will work in this case or not but it's worth a show. The other option is to do a repair install but you will need the XP disk for the verison that is on the machine (the XP Home upgrade will not do a repair install for an XP Pro installation).

Let me know what happens.

No, the 'Last Known Good Configuration' didn't work, it got to the same screen as the other tries. I'm trying to get my hands on the XP Pro disk; if I can't get it, or if it doesn't work, do I have any options other than a complete wipe?

Hi trekman47. Yes there is a way to do this and use your XP Home CD. It will require a couple of reboots into the Recovery Console and Safe Mode Command Prompt. By following these directions we can get to the point where we can recover using the System Restore. However, by doing this it will also replace all of the infections and we will have to start all over again.

Hi trekman47. Actually this should be Ok because if you notice all of the infected files are gone already. We just have to remove the listings from the registry and run a couple of good scans to check.

Ok, let's get started. Please print these directions and tehn proceed with the follwoing steps in order.

Step #1

We need to disable TeaTimer so it does not interfere with the fixes we are about to do.
  • Run Spybot-S&D
  • Go to the Mode menu, and make sure Advanced Mode is selected
  • On the left hand side, choose Tools -> Resident
  • Uncheck Resident TeaTimer and OK any prompts
  • Restart your computer.
Step #2

Start HijackThis and click the Scan button to perform a scan. Look for the following items and click in the checkbox in front of each item to select it:O2 - BHO: (no name) - {0393FE81-0BBD-4BCE-B4F2-C643AA7D77DD} - (no file)
O2 - BHO: (no name) - {10BC40B5-5019-4A47-B033-308CA16D4959} - (no file)
O2 - BHO: (no name) - {1559C6FD-8BDE-476E-98C7-871E59193FCE} - (no file)
O2 - BHO: C:\WINDOWS\system32\atmpvc.dll - {7DBA5E61-9C51-4365-ACD2-DE684E133F8C} - C:\WINDOWS\system32\atmpvc.dll (file missing)
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [zzzHPSETUP] E:\Setup.exe
O15 - Trusted Zone: *.coolwebsearch.com
O15 - Trusted Zone: *.searchmeup.com
O20 - Winlogon Notify: eventss - C:\WINDOWS\system32\atmpvc.dll (file missing)

Now close ALL open windows except HijackThis and click the Fix Checked button to finish the repair.

Step #3

Please run at least 2 of the following on-line virus scans:Trend Micro Housecall
BitDefender On-Line Virus Scan
Panda ActiveScan
eTrust Antivirus Web Scanner
Make sure that you choose "fix" or "clean".

Step #4

AdAware SE

Download, install, update, configure and run a scan with Ad-aware SE:
  • Download and Install AdAware SE Personal, keeping the default options. However, some of the settings will need to be changed before your first scan.
  • Close ALL windows except Ad-Aware SE.
  • Click on the‘world’ icon at the top right of the Ad-Aware SE window and let AdAware SE update the reference list for the adware and malware.
  • Once the update is finished click on the ‘Gear’ icon (second from the left at the top of the window) to access the preferences/settings window:
    • In the ‘General’ window make sure the following are selected in green:
      • Under Safety:
        • Automatically save log-file
      • Automatically quarantine objects prior to removal
      • Safe Mode (always request confirmation)
    • Under Definitions:
      • Prompt to update outdated definitions - set the number of days
  • Click on the ‘Scanning’ button on the left and select in green:
    • Under Driver, Folders & Files:
      • Scan Within Archives
    • Under Select drives & folders to scan:
      • choose all hard drives
    • Under Memory & Registry: all green
      • Scan Active Processes
      • Scan Registry
      • Deep Scan Registry
      • Scan my IE favorites for banned URL’s
      • Scan my Hosts file
  • Click on the ‘Advanced’ button on the left and select in green:
    • Under Shell Integration:
      • Move deleted files to recycle bin
    • Under Logfile Detail Level: all green
      • include addtional object information
      • DESELECT - include negligible objects information
      • include environment information
    • Under Alternate Data Streams:
      • Don't log streams smaller than 0 bytes
      • Don't log ADS with the following names: CA_INOCULATEIT
  • Click the ‘Tweak’ button and select in green:
    • Under ‘Scanning Engine’:
      • Unload recognized processes during scanning
      • Scan registry for all users instead of current user only
    • Under ‘Cleaning Engine’:
      • Let Windows remove files in use at next reboot
    • Under Log Files:
      • Include basic Ad-aware SE settings in logfile
      • Include additional Ad-aware SE settings in logfile
      • Please do not check: Include Module list in logfile
  • Click on ‘Proceed’ to save the settings.
  • Click ‘Start’
  • Choose 'Perform Full System Scan'
  • DESELECT "Search for negligible risk entries", as negligible risk entries (MRU's) are not considered to be a threat.
  • Click ‘Next’ and Ad-Aware SE will scan your hard drive(s) with the options you have selected and clean automatically.
  • If Ad-Aware SE finds bad entries, you will receive a list of what it found in the window
  • Save the log file when it asks and then click ‘Finish’
  • REBOOT to complete the removal of what Ad-Aware SE found.
Step #5

Let's re-enable TeaTimer again:
  • Run Spybot-S&D
  • Go to the Mode menu, and make sure Advanced Mode is selected
  • On the left hand side, choose Tools -> Resident
  • Check Resident TeaTimer and OK any prompts
  • Restart your computer.
Step #6

Reboot your computer normally, start HijackThis and perform a new scan. Use the Add Reply button to post your new log file back here along with details of any problems you encountered performing the above steps and I will review it when it comes in.
