For some reason, I keep getting a norton anti-virus pop-up saying that I have a "Bloodhound_Exploit_20" (this may be slightly incorrect) virus that can't be fixed. I have run Norton Antivirus, Ad-Aware, and Spybot. As I have used this forum before, I know that I should run HJT, so here is my log:

Hello dcbardes and welcome to the BC forums. After reviewing your log I see a few items that require our attention. Please print these directions and then proceed with the following steps in order.

Step #1

Download CCleaner and install it but do not run it yet.

Step #2

I recommend that you uninstall Spyware Cleaner. It is considered as a rougue applicaiton that uses false positives and aggresive advertizing as a goad to purchase.

Remove installed programs using Add or Remove Programs in the Control Panel:
  • Click Start.
  • Click Control Panel.
  • Double-click Add or Remove Programs.
  • Look in the Currently installed programs box for each program listed below and if it is there:
  • Click on it to select it.
  • Click Change (or Change/Remove) button.
  • If you are prompted to confirm the removal of the program, click Yes.
Spyware Cleaner
Step #3

Start in Safe Mode Using the F8 method:
  • Restart the computer.
  • As soon as the BIOS is loaded begin tapping the F8 key until the boot menu appears.
  • Use the arrow keys to select the Safe Mode menu item.
  • Press the Enter key.
Step #4

Start HijackThis and click the Scan button to perform a scan. Look for the following items and click in the checkbox in front of each item to select it:O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [Wpos] C:\Documents and Settings\angela\Application Data\cmwt.exe
O16 - DPF: {15AD6789-CDB4-47E1-A9DA-992EE8E6BAD6} - http://static.windupdates.com/cab/MediaAcc.../bridge-c27.cab

Now close ALL open windows except HijackThis and click the Fix Checked button to finish the repair.

Step #5

We need to make sure all hidden files are showing so please:
  • Click Start.
  • Open My Computer.
  • Select the Tools menu and click Folder Options.
  • Select the View tab.
  • Under the Hidden files and folders heading select Show hidden files and folders.
  • Uncheck the Hide file extensions for known types option.
  • Uncheck the Hide protected operating system files (recommended) option.
  • Click Yes to confirm.
  • Click OK.
Find the following files/folders and delete them (don't worry if they are already gone):C:\Documents and Settings\angela\Application Data\cmwt.exe
C:\Documents and Settings\angela\Desktop\Spy Stuff\PKTMP003.exe
C:\Program Files\Spyware Cleaner\ <--folder

Step #6

Start CCleaner and click on the Run Cleaner button in the lower right-hand corner. When it is finished close CCleaner.

Step #7

Reboot normally and run at least 2 of the following on-line virus scans:Trend Micro Housecall
BitDefender On-Line Virus Scan
Panda ActiveScan
eTrust Antivirus Web Scanner
Make sure that you choose "fix" or "clean".

Step #8

OK. Reboot your computer normally, start HijackThis and perform a new scan. Use the Add Reply button to post your new log file back here along with details of any problems you encountered performing the above steps and I will review it when it comes in.

For some reason, all of the online virus scans stopped responding after about ten minutes. Are there any other programs that I should delete?

Hi dcbardes. It takes some time for any of them to run and there will not be activity oging on all of the time so it might just be that the programs were processing information when it seemed like they were idle.Or it could be that one of the infected files was trying to stop the scan. Hard to say at this point.

It still looks like there is an infection here so I want to check for some hidden files that would not show up in a HijackThis log.

Download rkfiles.zip and unzip it to its own permanent folder.

Important! Reboot in SAFE MODE !!

Start in Safe Mode Using the F8 method:
  • Restart the computer in Safe Mode.
  • As soon as the BIOS is loaded begin tapping the F8 key until the Advanced Options menu appears.
  • Use the arrow keys to select the Safe Mode menu item.
  • Press the Enter key.
Locate the rkfiles.bat file and double-click it to run it. It will start scanning your computer and could take a little while so be patient. When the DOS window closes, reboot back to normal mode.

Post the contents of C:\log.txt back here and I will review it when it comes in.

Everytime I try to download the rkzip thing, this error message comes up:
"The dynamic link library tsad.dll could not be found in the specified path . . ."
What does this mean? And then, "access to the specified file is denied."

Locate regfix.reg on your Desktop and double-click on it. You will receive a prompt similar to: "Do you wish to merge the information into the registry?". Answer Yes and wait for a message to appear similar to Merged Successfully.

Restart your computer.

Click Start>Run, type cmd into the Open editbox and click the Ok button.

In the command prompt window type each of the following commands and press the Enter key after each one:cd\program files\flexpack\debug

Thank you for your help OT.
I did everything you said to fix the TimeSink infection, but then when I tried to do the rkfiles.zip I received this error message again:

"The dynamic link library tsad.dll could not be found in the specified path
C:\PROGRA~\PKWARE\PKZIPW;.;C:\WINNT\system32;C:\WINNT\system;C:\WINNT;C:\WINNT\system32;C:\WINNT;C:\WINNT\System32\Wbem;C:\Program Files\Common Files\STOPzilla!"

Also, everytime I log on to the computer, I receive this error message:

"Error loading C:\Program Files\WildTangent\Apps\CDA\cdaEngine0400.dll
The specified module could not be found."

Do you know why I cannot run this rkfiles? Is there something more wrong with my computer?

You can disregard the previous message that I posted. For some reason, my unzip program wasn't working correctly, but it's fine now. I will post this log soon.

Hi dcbardes. Yes, there's a file hiding there. Follow these steps to remove it:

Step #1

Download the Pocket Killbox and unzip the contents of KillBox.zip to your desktop.

Step #3

Double-click on KillBox.exe to launch the program.

Highlight the lines below and press the Ctrl key and the C key at the same time to copy them to the clipboard:C:\WINNT\system32\tvmk1ez.dll
Now go to the Killbox application and click on the File menu and then the Paste from Clipboard menu item. In the Full Path of File to Delete box you should see the first file. If you dropdown that box you should see the rest of them. Make sure that they are all there.

Click on the Delete on Reboot option and then click on the red circle with a white 'X' in to to delete the files. Killbox will tell you that all listed files will be deleted on next reboot, click YES. When it asks if you would like to Reboot now, click YES. If you get a "PendingFileRenameOperations Registry Data has been Removed by External Process!" message then just restart manually.

You system will reboot now.

After rebooting, you could get alot of error messages when applications start because these files were linked to Explorer.exe. That is normal.

Step #4

Now open Internet Explorer and go to the eTrust Antivirus Web Scanner and perform a scan. This will repair the applicaiton errors that you are receiving and clean up the rest of the infection.

Step #5

Important! Reboot in SAFE MODE !!

Start in Safe Mode Using the F8 method:
  • Restart the computer in Safe Mode.
  • As soon as BIOS is loaded begin tapping the F8 key until the Advanced Options menu appears.
  • Use the arrow keys to select the Safe Mode menu item.
  • Press the Enter key.
Locate the rkfiles.bat file and double-click it to run it. It will start scanning your computer and could take a little while so be patient. When the DOS window closes, reboot back to normal mode.

Post the contents of the new C:\log.txt file back here in the next step.

Step #7

OK. Reboot your computer normally, start HijackThis and perform a new scan. Use the Add Reply button to post your new log file and a new log from rkfiles.bat back here along with details of any problems you encountered performing the above steps and I will review it when it comes in.

We have a couple of last steps to perform and then you're all set.

First, let's reset your hidden/system files and folders. System files are hidden for a reason and we don't want to have them openly available and susceptible to accidental deletion.* Click Start.
* Open My Computer.
* Select the Tools menu and click Folder Options.
* Select the View tab.
* Under the Hidden files and folders heading UNSELECT Show hidden files and folders.
* CHECK the Hide protected operating system files (recommended) option.
* Click Yes to confirm.
* Click OK.
Next, let's clean your restore points and set a new one:

Reset and Re-enable your System Restore to remove infected files that have been backed up by Windows. The files in System Restore are protected to prevent any programs from changing those files. This is the only way to clean these files: (You will lose all previous restore points which are likely to be infected)1. Turn off System Restore.On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
Check Turn off System Restore.
Click Apply, and then click OK.
2. Restart your computer.

3. Turn ON System Restore.On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
UN-Check Turn off System Restore.
Click Apply, and then click OK.
[/list]System Restore will now be active again.

Now that you are clean, to help protect your computer in the future I recommend that you get the following free programs:
  • SpywareBlaster to help prevent spyware from installing in the first place.
  • SpywareGuard to catch and block spyware before it can execute.
  • IESpy-Ad to block access to malicious websites so you cannot be redirected to them from an infected site or email.
You should also have a good firewall. Here are 3 free ones available for personal use:and a good antivirus like the one you are currently using. It is critical to have both a firewall and an anti-virus application and to keep them updated.

To keep your operating system up to date visit monthly. And to keep your system clean run these free malware scanners
weekly, and be aware of what emails you open and websites you visit.

Thank you so much OT. Everything is working just fine, except I couldn't do the System Restore because Windows 2000 Professional doesn't have system restore. I downloaded the three spy programs and the sygate firewall.
