I have run Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and quarantined everything that it found. I have also run Avast and it picks up 3 files that are infected with Win32:Adware-Gen and Win32:FakeAlert-AJ. The files that Avast finds infected are in C:System Volume Informationrestore....... and also C:WindowsInstaller606d9e.msiIcon.Icon.exe

I am not able to get rid of these using Avast. Avast won't allow me to do anything besides ignore them. How do I go about getting rid of these? Any help would be greatly appreciated!

here is the latest HJT log....should have included this in original post

Hello thecuz24,

Sorry for the delay.

Before we do anything:

In the upper right hand corner of the topic you will see a button called Options. If you click on this in the drop-down menu you can choose Track this topic. By doing this and then choosing Immediate E-Mail notification and then clicking on Proceed you will be advised when we respond the your topic and facilitate the cleaning of your machine.

After 5 days if a topic is not replied to we assume it has been abandoned and it is closed.

Firstly

The ones AVAST finds in Restore won't hurt you computer unless you use the Restore function. Otherwise they will just stay there until they are dropped off sometime down the track. Having said that, we do need to have a look at what's going on to make sure there is nothing else there.

Note: We always clean out System Restore once we have your machine clean in any event.

Now, it's been a few days so lets get an up to date look at things.
  • Please download random's system information tool (RSIT) by random/random from here.
  • It is important that is saved to your desktop.
  • Double click on RSIT.exe to run RSIT.
  • Click Continue at the disclaimer screen.
  • Once it has finished, two logs will open. Please post the contents of both log.txt (<<will be maximized) and info.txt (<<will be minimized)

Manners are the basis of a civilized society and make everyone's lives just a little happier. They cost nothing but they are worth so much.

Hello again thecuz24,

Nothing too bad there that I can see.

In this post we will look at removing suspect programs and run a scan to look for possible hidden bad ones.

Viewpoint Manager is considered as foistware instead of malware since it is mostly installed without users approval. This changed from what we know in 2006 read this article:

http://www.clickz.com/news/article.php/3561546

SpywareBot shows up in your uninstall list.

SpywareBot is a suspect anti-spyware application that deceptively leverages the Spybot Search and Destroy name, and provides users no End User License Agreement.

If features in SpywareWarrior's list of Rogue anti-spyware see link below.

http://www.spywarewarrior.com/rogue_anti-s...re.htm#products

I recommend removal of these programs. Click on Start > Control Panel > Add or Remove Programs uninstall the following if they exist:
  • Viewpoint
  • Viewpoint Manager
  • Viewpoint Media Player
  • Spywarebot

Next

Kaspersky works with Internet Explorer and Firefox 3. It uses Java Runtime Environment (JRE) Java 1.6.0_7 or later.

Your version of Java does not comply, please download JavaRa to your desktop and unzip it to its own folder
  • Run JavaRa.exe, pick the language of your choice and click Select. Then click Remove Older Versions.
  • Accept any prompts.
  • Open JavaRa.exe again and select Search For Updates.
  • Select Update Using Sun Java's Website then click Search and click on the Open Webpage button. Download and install the latest Java Runtime Environment (JRE) version for your computer.
Now go to Kaspersky website and perform an online antivirus scan.
  • Read through the requirements and privacy statement and click on Accept button.
  • It will start downloading and installing the scanner and virus definitions. You will be prompted to install an application from Kaspersky. Click Run.
  • When the downloads have finished, click on Settings.
  • Make sure these boxes are checked (ticked). If they are not, please tick them and click on the Save button:
    • Spyware, Adware, Dialers, and other potentially dangerous programs
      Archives
      Mail databases
  • Click on My Computer under Scan.
  • Once the scan is complete, it will display the results. Click on View Scan Report.
  • You will see a list of infected items there. Click on Save Report As....
  • Save this report to a convenient place. Change the Files of type to Text file (.txt) before clicking on the Save button.
Copy and paste that information in your next post.

So when you return please post
  • Kaspersky scan results
  • a fresh HijackThis log

Ok, well I am having a few problems with the last set of instructions you gave me.

- I was able to remove all the viewpoint programs you listed, but the Spyware Bot I am not able to remove. I have been trying for like a month to get that thing off my computer and when I try to remove it my computer freezes and then a message pops up that says "Fatal error during installation". Any ideas?

- Second, when i try to download the Java(JRE) through Sun Download Manager to install it, the download gets disconnected from the server every 10 seconds until it reached the maximum number of retries and then it just stops.

Thanks again for all your help.

OK Malwarebytes should remove this.

Second, when i try to download the Java(JRE) through Sun Download Manager to install it, the download gets disconnected from the server every 10 seconds until it reached the maximum number of retries and then it just stops.

Try downloading without using the Sun Download Manager option.

Firstly though

You have used Malwarebytes before. If you still have it on your machine please update and run. Post the scan report back here.

If you no-longer have Malwarebytes please download from Here or Here

Double Click mbam-setup.exe to install the application.
  • Make sure a checkmark is placed next to Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware, then click Finish.
  • If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
  • Once the program has loaded, select "Perform Quick Scan", then click Scan.
  • The scan may take some time to finish,so please be patient.
  • When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
  • Make sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
  • When disinfection is completed, a log will open in Notepad and you may be prompted to Restart.(See Extra Note)
  • The log is automatically saved by MBAM and can be viewed by clicking the Logs tab in MBAM.
  • Copy&Paste the entire report in your next reply.
Extra Note:
If MBAM encounters a file that is difficult to remove, you will be presented with 1 of 2 prompts, click OK to either and let MBAM proceed with the disinfection process,if asked to restart the computer, please do so immediatly.

Next

Providing removal of Spyware Bot with MBAM was successful try the Java update and Kaspersky scan.

Note: Don't hesitate to ask any questions if you run into more difficulty.

When you return please post
  • Malwarebytes report
  • Kaspersky scan results

Ok.....no luck with the Malwarebytes on the Spyware Bot. When I first ran the Malwarebytes scan several weeks ago it found many infected items. There were a list of items that applied to Spyware Bot, but it appeared to just be the log files. I quarantined and deleted them. The new scan I just ran picked up nothing, but Spyware Bot is still listed in my Add/Remove Programs. Maybe there is something else I can use to get rid of that.

- I was able to download the Java and I ran a Kaspersky scan. The log to that and the Malwarebytes scan are below. How do I go about getting rid of what Kaspersky finds?

Hi thecuz24,

How do I go about getting rid of what Kaspersky finds?

We will attend to that now.

Please download the OTMoveIt3 by OldTimer.
  • Save it to your desktop.
  • Please double-click OTMoveIt3.exe to run it. (Note: If you are running on Vista, right-click on the file and choose Run As Administrator).
  • Copy the lines in the codebox below to the clipboard by highlighting ALL of them and pressing CTRL + C (or, after highlighting, right-click and choose Copy):

    :processes
    explorer.exe
    :files
    C:\Documents and Settings\Owner\Shared\01 Track 1 (fergalicious).wma
    C:\Documents and Settings\Owner\Shared\mr.carter.mp3
C:\Documents and Settings\Owner\Shared\[[ make it rain edited 02.wma
    :commands
    [emptytemp]
    [start explorer]
    [Reboot]
  • Return to OTMoveIt3, right click in the "Paste Instructions for Items to be Moved" window (under the yellow bar) and choose Paste.
  • Click the red Moveit! button.
  • Copy everything in the Results window (under the green bar) to the clipboard by highlighting ALL of them and pressing CTRL + C (or, after highlighting, right-click and choose copy), and paste it in your next reply.
  • Close OTMoveIt3
Note: If a file or folder cannot be moved immediately you may be asked to reboot the machine to finish the move process. If you are asked to reboot the machine choose Yes. In this case, after the reboot, open Notepad (Start->All Programs->Accessories->Notepad), click File->Open, in the File Name box enter *.log and press the Enter key, navigate to the C:\_OTMoveIt\MovedFiles folder, and open the newest .log file present, and copy/paste the contents of that document back here in your next post.

Now

Please re-open HijackThis
  • Click on the Config button
  • Click on Misc Tools button
  • Click on the Open Uninstall Manager button
  • find SpywareBot on the list and click on it
  • Click the Delete this entry button
  • after that click on Save List...button and save to a place of your choosing
When you press Save button a notepad will open with the contents of that file. Simply copy and paste the contents back here.

Finally in this post

Please run Kaspersky on line scan again.

So when you come back please post
  • OTMoveIt3 log
  • HijackThis uninstall list
  • Kaspersky scan results
  • and a fresh HijackThis log
Note: It is likely the reports will not fit on one post. Just use as many posts as you need, that's fine.

Alrighty....I did the OTMoveIt and the Uninstall on HijackThis for Spyware Bot. When I did the OTMoveIt, my Avast Antivirus came up 3 times detecting those 3 files that were infected and I just clicked no action. I hope that was the right move.

- Below are the OTMoveIt Log and HiJackThis Uninstall List. I will go and do the last few steps now.....

Hi thecuz24,

Thanks for that, all going according to plan.

I know that Kaspersky can take a while (sometimes a long while), look forward to seeing it's scan results and the HijackThis log when they are ready.

Hello thecuz24,

Your machine looks clean to me. The only ones Kaspersky found are related to the tools we used and we will deal with them in this post.

Before we do though, just a note of caution. You have the P2P program Limewire on your computer. P2P file sharing programs inevitably lead to infection. To avoid future infection you might consider uninstalling it.

We have a couple of last steps to perform and then you're all set.

Please go here to download OTCleanIt.

Run this program to remove the tools we have been using.

You will be asked to reboot the machine to finish the Cleanup process choose Yes.

MBAM can be uninstalled via control panel add/remove but it may be a useful tool to keep

Next, we need to clean your restore points and set a new one:

Reset and Re-enable your System Restore to remove infected files that have been backed up by Windows. The files in System Restore are protected to prevent any programs from changing those files. This is the only way to clean these files: (You will lose all previous restore points which are likely to be infected)1. Turn off System Restore. On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
Check Turn off System Restore.
Click Apply, and then click OK.
2. Restart your computer.

3. Turn ON System Restore. On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
UN-Check Turn off System Restore.
Click Apply, and then click OK.
[/list]System Restore will now be active again.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

A reminder now: Remember to turn back on any anti-malware programs you may have turned off during the cleaning process.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Now that you are clean here are some things I think are worth having a look at:

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Be sure and give the Temp folders a cleaning out now and then. This helps with security and your computer will run more efficiently. I clean mine once a week. For ease of use, you might consider the following free program:--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

A great way to check that your Microsoft and Java have the latest updates is to go to Software Inspector at Secunia.

I do this weekly. Not only do they tell you which programs need updating but they give you the link to follow.

To bolster your security go to Secunia.com to ensure essential programs are up to date.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Make Internet Explorer more secure
  • Click Start > Run
  • Type Inetcpl.cpl & click OK
  • Click on the Security tab
  • Click Reset all zones to default level
  • Make sure the Internet Zone is selected & Click Custom level
  • In the ActiveX section, set the first two options ("Download signed and unsigned ActiveX controls) to "Prompt", and ("Initialize and Script ActiveX controls not marked as safe") to "Disable".a
  • Next Click OK, then Apply button and then OK to exit the Internet Properties page.
* MVPS Hosts file replaces your current HOSTS file with one containing well known ad sites and other bad sites. Basically, this prevents your computer from connecting to those sites by redirecting them to 127.0.0.1 which is your local computer, meaning it will be difficult to infect yourself in the future.

* Consider using an alternate browser. Mozilla's Firefox browser is excellant; it is much more secure than Internet Explorer, immune to almost all known browser hijackers, and also has the best built-in pop up blocker (Note: this as an added benefit!) that I have seen. Firefox is my default browser but I retain Internet Explorer as well so that I can access the very few sites that require it.

Firefox may be downloaded from Here

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Startuplite is a tool to help you stop some programs not needed when you start your computer from loading. They will begin automatically only when needed.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

To help protect your computer in the future here are some free programs you can look at:
  • SUPERAntiSpyware Free for Home Users to detect and remove spyware.
  • IESpy-Ad to block access to malicious websites so you cannot be redirected to them from an infected site or email.

You should also have a good firewall. Choose one of these that are free for personal use:
  • Comodo Note:Comodo Firewall is no longer available as a stand-alone download and you should choose firewall only during installation.
  • PC Tools Firewall Plus

If your Microsoft Update is not working automatically. Keep your operating system up to date by visiting
  • Microsoft Windows Update
monthly. And to keep your system clean run these free malware scannersweekly, and be aware of what emails you open and websites you visit.

To learn more about how to protect yourself while on the internet read this article by Tony Klein: So how did I get infected in the first place?

Have a safe and happy computing day!

hey i did those last couple steps and wanted to thank you for all your help. I do have one more question/concern however.

- Spyware Bot is still listed in Add/Remove Programs, but now there is no button to remove it now. It only gives the size of the program and how often its used. Also, it is listed in my control panel which I think is a little fishy since it is the only program in the control panel. Just let me know if I can remove that somehow.

Thanks again for all your help. I'll definitely be back in the future with any other problems.

Hi thecuz24,

- Spyware Bot is still listed in Add/Remove Programs, but now there is no button to remove it now. It only gives the size of the program and how often its used. Also, it is listed in my control panel which I think is a little fishy since it is the only program in the control panel. Just let me know if I can remove that somehow.

I think this is a non-functioning icon, left behind after the uninstall of the Spyware Bot software.

Control Panel items can be registered as a namespace, or it can be implemented in a DLL (with .CPL extension) that exports the CPlApplet function.

To remove the invalid icon from the Control Panel

Determining the corresponding .CPL file name

To determine the corresponding .CPL file for an invalid or non-functioning Control Panel item, use these steps:
  • Click Start > Control Panel
  • Right-click the invalid icon and choose Create Shortcut
  • Click Yes when you see the following dialog:

Windows cannot create a shortcut here.
Do you want the shortcut to be placed on the desktop instead?

  • In the Desktop, right-click the newly created shortcut and choose Properties
  • Click the Change Icon button. You'll then see the actual CPL file name in the resulting dialog.
  • Using the CPL file name, you should be able to trace the respective application. If that application has already been uninstalled, then you may simply delete the .CPL file.
Next

Now lets try using HijackThis again to get rid of that phantom name in the Add or Remove Programs list

1. Start HijackThis
2. Click on the Config button
3. Click on the Misc Tools button
4. Click on the Open Uninstall Manager button.

You will now be presented with a screen similar to the one below:

Posted Image

5. Highlight SpywareBot and choose Delete this entry.

Reboot your machine.

Come back and tell whether these steps have solved the problem.

Hello again

None of these steps seem to have worked. When I created the desktop icon and went to properties, change icon, i got the following message:

- Windows cannot find the file C:\ProgramFiles\SpywareBot\SpywareBot.exe

In the Hijackthis uninstall manager I had already removed SpywareBot from that list per your earlier instructions. As a result SpywareBot was not listed when I went back to the Uninstall manager.
