Got a Dell Inspiron 1501 on my bench that only gives me a black background and a mouse pointer when I logon. The usual CTRL + ALT + Delete does absolutely nothing. Occasionally I get a McAfee splash screen at startup. Tried system restore via a vista install disk, and no luck with safe mode either. Any insight is much appreciated. Also I cannot get into any account, so stuff that can be done outside of vista please

Have you tried Startup Repair? http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/tutorials/repair-windows-with-windows-startup-repair/
Have you done a diagnostic of the hard drive?
Can you access the loading of drivers outside of Windows? If so, try disabling the graphics drivers for the video card (not the built in Windows graphics drivers) and McAfee (just a hunch on my part).
Have you tried a repair install of Vista? http://www.vistax64.com/tutorials/88236-re...tall-vista.html
Worst case, slave the hard drive to another system and recover the data - then wipe and reinstall Vista.
My browser caused a flood of traffic, sio my IP address was banned. Hope to fix it soon. Will get back to posting as soon as Im able.
