INFORMATION: My computer is running very slow, all of a sudden. And the CPU usage is far too often at 100%.

PREPARATION:
------------
I have performed all the prep for listing my Hijack Log on Bleeping Computers by Quietman Post #1. (http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/u/26513/quietman7/) ... except for two processes
I cannot run:
o System File Checker(SFC). It's error msg says that my Windows XP disk is older than my
current OS, so it stops.
o Ad-Aware. It runs for up to six hours but always sticks at some point and cannot complete.
Otherwise I have performed every prep process listed by Quietman.

Hello. I am PropagandaPanda (Panda or PP for short), and I will be helping you with your log.

I apologize for the delay in response. We get overwhelmed with logs at times, but we are trying our best to keep up. If you have since resolved the original problem you were having, we would appreciate you letting us know. If you still need help, post a new HijackThis log.

You may want to keep the link to this topic in your favourites. Alternatively, you can click the Posted Image button at the top bar of this topic and Track this Topic, where you can choose email notifications. The topics you are tracking are shown here.

Please take note of some guidelines for this fix:
  • Refrain from making any changes to your computer including installing/uninstall programs, deleting files, modifying the registry, and running scanners or tools. Doing so could cause changes to the directions I have to give you and prolong the time required. Further more, you should not be taking any advice relating to this computer from any other source throughout the course of this fix.
  • If you do not understand any step(s) provided, please do not hesitate to ask before continuing. I would much rather clarify instructions or explain them differently than have something important broken.
  • Even if things appear to be better, it might not mean we are finished. Please continue to follow my instructions and reply back until I give you the "all clean". We do not want to clean you part-way, only to have the system re-infect itself.
  • Finally, please reply using the Posted Image button in the lower right hand corner of your screen. Do not start a new topic. The logs that you post should be pasted directly into the reply. Only attach them if requested or if they do not fit into the post.
Run Scan with Kaspersky
Please do a scan with Kaspersky Online Scanner. If for some reason you cannot complete this scan, skip it.

This scan is for Internet Explorer Only.

If you are using Windows Vista, open your browser by right-clicking on its icon and select Run as administrator to perform this scan.

  • Please disable your realtime protection software before proceeding. Refer to this page if you are unsure how.
  • Open the Kaspersky Scanner page.
  • Click on Accept and install any components it needs.
  • The program will install and then begin downloading the latest definition files.
  • After the files have been downloaded on the left side of the page in the Scan section select My Computer
  • This will start the program and scan your system.
  • The scan will take a while, so be patient and let it run.
  • Once the scan is complete, click on View scan report
  • Now, click on the Save Report as button.
  • Save the file to your desktop.
  • Copy and paste that information in your next post.
You can refer to this animation by sundavis.

This scanner will only scan. It does not remove any malware it finds.

Save Uninstall List with HijackThis
  • Double click the HijackThis icon on your desktop.
  • If you see a while screen, click Main Menu at the middle bottom of the window, otherwise move onto the next step.
  • Click Open the Misc Tools section.
  • Under System tools, select Uninstall Manager....
  • Near the bottom right, click Save list... and save uninstall_list.txt onto your desktop.
  • Close out of HijackThis.
  • Post back with uninstall_list.txt.

Post back with:
-the Kaspersky log (if you are unable to run this, skip it)
-the uninstall list
-a new HijackThis log

Please also tell me of any changes you have made to your computer since your topic was started.

If you do not make a reply in 5 days, we will need to close your topic.

With Regards,
The Panda

Important Note to Other Users Reading this Topic: The instructions provided in this topic below this point are for the original topic starter only. Even if you have similar problems or log entries to those given here, please do not follow the directions, especially those involving specific tools and scripts. Doing so can result in serious damage to your computer. Instead, please start your own topic. Feel free to link to any relevant topics as needed.

Hey Panda-

I welcome your help and shall follow your directions as though you had writ them in stone and your name was Moses.

I am going to do the Kaspersky online scan now, but you should know that I use Firefox except when I'm up on Microsoft Updates or PC Pitstop.

I cannot thank you enough for taking up my problem, and

may you win the lottery,

Mucklucks

Panda,

Here is the report I posted on November 16. Below are the Kaspersky Report & the Hijackthis Log. (I had also run MBAM, which found no problems.)

Thanks for sticking around, Mucklucks

Hello.

Is your computer still that slow?

How much ran do you have?

Please get an uninstall list as I described in my first post to you.

In the Task Manager, please check which process is taking up the CPU.

WIth Regards,
The Panda

How much RAM do I have:
-----------------------
RAM = 1GB. (With Carbonite OFF (see next item) the Available RAM: 508MB, Tot Virtual Mem: 2GB, Available Virtual: 1.96, Page File: 3.9GB)

Task Manager CPU usage:
-----------------------
The process taking up most of my CPU is the back-up service: "CarboniteService". Even though I have set it to only perform daily from 1:00am-8:00am, it is now (at 11:45am, Friday) running, and the CPU is running at 99% and 100%.

(Now I shall turn it off and show you what happens.) Using Task Manager to 'End process', I have turned off Caronite. Immediately the CPU usage drops to between 2% and 7%. Pretty obvious what is slowing my system, isn't it? I must contact Carbonite Support and present the problem to them, yes?

Hello.

Trust me on this one: the support teams do next to nothing about "your program makes my computer slow"

Let's try setting that service to Manual, so it doesn't start every boot.

Click on your Start Menu>Run>type "services.msc" The service manager will open.
Double click "CarboniteService". Stop the service. Change the startup type to "Manual" and click "Apply".
Restart your computer.

Tell me how it goes.

With Regards,
The Panda

Well, Panda, you were right. Making Carbonite manual fixes my startup CPU usage problem. CPU now runs on startup at 2-8% (after AVG has got itself open and stable.) What now? Should I manually turn on Carbonite daily or...?

Also, what about those old, old malwares that Kaspersky online found in my email archives?

I await your orders and/or suggestions,

Best wishes,

Mucklucks

Hello Mucklucks .

 orders? It's your computer here. I can't "order" you to do anything.

What now? Should I manually turn on Carbonite daily or...?

I'm pretty sure the program has put itself in the scheduled jobs folder. Most backup programs do.

Please check in this folder for a ".job" entry related to Carbonite:
C:\WINDOWS\Tasks

If there is not one there, we can create one.

Also, what about those old, old malwares that Kaspersky online found in my email archives?

If you do not have anything vital in those archives, I would empty those out. Antiviruses like AVG can usually detect email viruses and stop you from even opening the emails well.

With Regards,
The Panda

To The Panda,

In answer to your question, there is nothing in c:\windows\task. It is empty.

In Control Panel - Scheduled Tasks - there are 3 entries: Ad-aware2007, Spybot, and AppleSoftwareUpdate. No Carbonite.

Since I closed CarboniteService.exe in TaskManager earlier today it has not been running, but it is still listed in Processes in Task Manager using 00 of CPU. I shall check it after 1:00am in two hours to see if it is obeying my instructions to run between 1:00am - 8:00am daily. I shall let you know after I've checked it.

What BTW is c:\wondows\SchedLgU.txt? Spybot keeps wanting to delete any changes in it, and I've been clicking Delete (not allowing change) since I don't allow any changes of anything while you are working with me. I've read that SchedLgU.txt can be dangerous. Do you know if that is so?

Good night!

Mucklucks

Hi to The Panda~

Okay, I shall obey and allow SchedLgU.txt to write changes from now on (and I'll order Spybot to allow it too.)

Now here's my report on what occurred in the early morning hours with Carbonite and CPU usage. As 1:00am approached, I kept my eyes peeled on the computer until ... until I fell dead asleep. Hey, some observer, right?

To make up for my sins, this morning at 7:00am I went to my computer and checked it out. I've mentioned that I had scheduled Carbonite (in it's own scheduler) to operate only between 1:00am and 8:00am daily, so at 7:00am today I looked to see what was happening. Here is my report for you:

Carbonite was running. The CPU usage was constantly between 96%-100% for the solid half hour that I watched it. Any other apps I tried to use were of course desperately slow. (Task Manager took a full minute to open; Word 2003 took 3+ minutes by stopwatch to get itself opened.) I have attached a GIF to this note. It shows the Task Manager's Performance Graph clocked at one second intervals. I wanted to show you what's driving me bananas.

Below are readings of the three processes with the heaviest usage that were running before 8:00am this morning:

Heavy Use Processes CPU RANGE Mem Usage
-------------------- ----------------- -------------
avgscanx.exe ...00...67...50...99 66,060K
dfrgNTFS.exe ...00...45...32...56 2,508K
carboniteservice.exe ...00...42...88...99 20,204K

BTW, when Carbonite is running, during its scheduled hours, and I stop it (by using the Task Manager's "End Task") within seconds it is up and running again, and it has re-appeared in the Processes List.

Since shortly after 8:00am this morning Carbonite has not been running. Neither has AVG.

So since morning my CPU usage is running around 2% - 7%. Oh the joy!

All of this is a bit confusing to me. Two computers belonging to family members run the same programs I do without problems. And I used to do have no terrible slow-downs on my own computer. Ah, well, perhaps you will suggest something more I can do.

May you enjoy these fine fall days, and

May you win the Lottery,

Mucklucks
