Hello BleepingComputer!

I am (unfortunately) a repeat customer. Thanks to your gracious help the first time around (last April/May) my PC was running smoothly until something happened about a month ago. I'm not sure if I visited the wrong website or what, but my McAfee started picking up Trojans and I noticed that my PC seems a bit more sluggish and I often get the "Blue Screen of Death" about 2 or 3 hours after booting up. I'm not sure if it's related but I also cannot fully run my Windows automatic updates. It says "failed" after I try on 4 of the updates. One more thing...every time I boot up, I get this DOS-looking window spring up with the title "lipmjehg.exe" and after a few seconds the message "Program too big to fit into memory" appears in the window and then it disappears. I never had that before or least never noticed it. Here is my HijackThis log. Any help is well appreciated! Thank you for your help!

Hi slick8421,

Welcome to Bleeping Computers

My name is Tomk_. I would be glad to take a look at your log and help you with solving any malware problems. HijackThis logs can take a while to research, so please be patient and I'd be grateful if you would note the following:
  • I will be working on your Malware issues, this may or may not, solve other issues you have with your machine.
  • The fixes are specific to your problem and should only be used for the issues on this machine.
  • Please continue to review my answers until I tell you your machine appears to be clear. Absence of symptoms does not mean that everything is clear.
  • It's often worth reading through these instructions and printing them for ease of reference.
  • If you don't know or understand something, please don't hesitate to say or ask!! It's better to be sure and safe than sorry.
  • Please reply to this thread. Do not start a new topic.
  • Unfortunately, if I do not hear back from you within 5 days, I will be forced to close your topic. If you still need help after I have closed your topic, feel free to create a new one.
I apologize for the delay in response. We get overwhelmed at times but we are trying our best to keep up.
If you have since resolved the original problem you were having, we would appreciate your letting us know. If not, please post a new HijackThis log so that we can have a look at the current condition of your machine.

Hello Tomk_,

No problem on the delay. I appreciate the response. Since I can still work ok, please take as long as you need.

Actually, things seem to have cleared up a little. I kept running virus scans on McAfee as well as Spybot and Ad-Aware and that seemed to have helped a bit. I no longer get the trojans and haven't seen the blue screen in about a week (knock on wood!). I was able to complete the Windows automatic updates. As far as the "lipmjehg.exe" thing, I found it on the startup list and just unchecked it. Haven't seen it since which is nice.

Anyway, here's my new log. The only thing I'm concerned about is it still seems like my PC is running a bit slower than before. It could be my connection or something on my end but I'd appreciate it if you could take a look at this log and see if there's anything worth noting. Thank you again for your time and help!

slick8421,

I see that Viewpoint is installed. Viewpoint, Viewpoint Manager, Viewpoint Media Player are Viewpoint components which are installed as a side effect of installing other software, most notably AOL and AOL Instant Messenger (AIM). Viewpoint Manager is responsible for managing and updating Viewpoint Media Player’s components. You can disable this using the Viewpoint Manager Control Panel found in the Windows Control Panel menu. By selecting Disable auto-updating for the Viewpoint Manager -- the player will no longer attempt to check for updates. Anything that is installed without your consent is suspect. Read what Viewpoint says and make your own decision.

To provide a satisfying consumer experience and to operate effectively, the Viewpoint Media Player periodically sends information to servers at Viewpoint. Each installation of the Viewpoint Media Player is identifiable to Viewpoint via a Customer Unique Identifier (CUID), an alphanumeric identifier embedded in the Viewpoint Media Player. The Viewpoint Media Player randomly generates the CUID during installation and uses it to indicate a unique installation of the product. A CUID is never connected to a user's name, email address, or other personal contact information. CUIDs are used for the sole purpose of filtering redundant information. Each of these information exchanges occurs anonymously.

Viewpoint Manager is considered as foistware instead of malware since it is often installed without user's approval but doesn't spy or do anything "bad". This may change, read Viewpoint to Plunge Into Adware
It is STRONGLY recommended that you remove the Viewpoint products; however, decide for yourself. To uninstall the Viewpoint components (Viewpoint, Viewpoint Manager, Viewpoint Media Player):
  • Click Start, then Settings, then click Control Panel.
  • In Control Panel, double-click Add or Remove Programs.
  • In Add or Remove Programs, Remove the Viewpoint component
  • Do the same for each Viewpoint component.

While TeaTimer is an excellent tool for the prevention of spyware, it can sometimes prevent HijackThis from fixing certain things.
Please disable TeaTimer for now until you are clean. TeaTimer can be re-activated once your HijackThis log is clean.
  • Open Spybot Search & Destroy.
  • In the Mode menu click Advanced mode if not already selected.
  • Choose Yes at the Warning prompt.
  • Expand the Tools menu.
  • Click Resident.
  • Uncheck the Resident "TeaTimer" (Protection of overall system settings) active. box.
  • In the File menu click Exit to exit Spybot Search & Destroy.
  • Please open HijackThis and run Do a system scan only
  • Check the boxes next to ONLY the entries listed below(if present):
    • O2 - BHO: (no name) - `@?49E9F-C8D7-4D59-B87D-784B7D6BE0B3} - (no file)
      O2 - BHO: (no name) - ?A?78D38-C3F9-4EFB-9B51-7695ECA05670} - (no file)

      O2 - BHO: (no name) - ????4-4C02-4ABF-8ECC-5164760863C6} - (no file)
  • Close all programs except for HijackThis.
  • Click on Fix checked
  • A box will pop up asking you if you wish to fix the selected items. Please choose YES.
  • Once it has fixed them, please exit/close HijackThis.

Please download ATF Cleaner by Atribune.
Download - ATF Cleaner
Double-click ATF-Cleaner.exe to run the program.
Under Main choose: Select All
Click the Empty Selected button.

(If you use FireFox or the Opera browser
To keep saved passwords, click No at the prompt.)

It's normal after running ATF cleaner that the PC will be slower to boot the first time or two.

Then

Please download Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware to your desktop.
  • Double-click mbam-setup.exe and follow the prompts to install the program.
  • At the end, be sure a checkmark is placed next to Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware, then click Finish.
  • If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
  • Once the program has loaded, select Perform quick scan, then click Scan.
  • When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
  • Be sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
  • When completed, a log will open in Notepad. Please save it to a convenient location and post the results.
  • Note: If you receive a notice that some of the items couldn't be removed, that they have been added to the delete on reboot list, please reboot (shut down your computer then restart it).
Also "copy/paste" a new HijackThis log file into this thread.

Also please describe how your computer behaves at the moment.

Hello Tomk_,

Thank you for the quick reply. I have chosen to remove all the Viewpoint applications and the TeaTimer was already unchecked when I went into Spybot. I have run the ATF Cleaner and Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and I'll post the log of that scan followed by the new HijackThis log. My computer rebooted as usual and it seemed to be moving a little quicker at least in the few things I've done until this point. Here are the logs:

slick8421,

Let's dig a little deeper.

Download ComboFix from one of these locations:

Link 1
Link 2
Link 3

* IMPORTANT !!! Save ComboFix.exe to your Desktop

  • Disable your AntiVirus and AntiSpyware applications, usually via a right click on the System Tray icon. They may otherwise interfere with our tools. If you have difficulty properly disabling your protective programs, refer to this link --> http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/t/114351/how-to-temporarily-disable-your-anti-virus-firewall-and-anti-malware-programs/

  • Double click on ComboFix.exe & follow the prompts.

  • As part of it's process, ComboFix will check to see if the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed. With malware infections being as they are today, it's strongly recommended to have this pre-installed on your machine before doing any malware removal. It will allow you to boot up into a special recovery/repair mode that will allow us to more easily help you should your computer have a problem after an attempted removal of malware.

  • Follow the prompts to allow ComboFix to download and install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console, and when prompted, agree to the End-User License Agreement to install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console.
**Please note: If the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is already installed, ComboFix will continue it's malware removal procedures.

Once the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed using ComboFix, you should see the following message:

Click on Yes, to continue scanning for malware.

When finished, it shall produce a log for you. Please include the C:\ComboFix.txt in your next reply.

Notes:

1. Do not mouse-click Combofix's window while it is running. That may cause it to stall.
2. Do not "re-run" Combofix. If you have a problem, reply back for further instructions.
3. ComboFix may reset a number of Internet Explorer's settings, including making I-E the default browser.
4. Combofix prevents autorun of ALL CD, floppy and USB devices to assist with malware removal & increase security. If this is an issue or makes it difficult for you -- please tell your helper.
5. CF disconnects your machine from the internet. The connection is automatically restored before CF completes its run. If CF runs into difficulty and terminates prematurely, the connection can be manually restored by restarting your machine.

Tomk_,

I didn't/couldn't find the option to 'Exit' my McAfee when I right-clicked systray. Instead, I went in and disabled everything manually.

I ran Combofix.exe and it prompted me to install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console, which I did. It looked like Combofix ran ok and then the PC rebooted on it's own. Upon booting up, a new Combofix window came up titled 'Find3M' and inside the window reading "Preparing Log Report, Do not run any programs until Combofix has finished" with a blinking cursor. It looked like my hard drive was working for about 5 minutes after that window came up and then stopped working with the window still up, no change. I've waited for 2 hours with no change.

Should it take this long? I'm hesitant to close that window without your instruction.

Again, I appreciate any help. Thank you!

slick8421,

Please try rebooting and see what happens. If ComboFix doesn't automatically provide you with a log (which it probably won't) then try this:

Please:
  • Right click on START on the left end of your Windows toolbar (lower left corner of your screen)
  • Click on Explore
  • Click on Local Disk (C:) in the left-hand window pane
  • Look for ComboFix.txt in the right-hand window pane and right click on it
  • Put your cursor (arrow) on Open With
  • Move your cursor to the new menu that opens and click on Choose Program...
  • Click on Notepad
When file opens, Copy/Paste text here

slick8421,

It appears Combofix didn't finish. Let's run it a different way.

Go to Posted Image -> Run -> copy/paste the following single line command in the runbox & click OK

"%userprofile%\desktop\combofix.exe" /killall

Azureus
You have Azureus, a P2P/file sharing programs installed on your computer. P2P applications like it are the largest source of malware we see. You'll be doing yourself a favor by removing it.

References for the risk of these programs can be found in these links:
http://www.microsoft.com/windows/ie/commun...protection.mspx
http://www.techweb.com/wire/160500554
http://www.internetworldstats.com/articles/art053.htm://http://www.techweb.com/wire/1605005...cles/art053.htm
See Clean/Infected P2P Programs here

I would recommend that you uninstall Azureus, however that choice is up to you. If you choose to remove these programs, you can do so via Control Panel >> Add or Remove Programs.

If you wish to keep it, please do not use it until your computer is cleaned.

Disable your protection programs as we did before.

COMBOFIX-Script
  • Please open Notepad (Start -> Run -> type notepad in the Open field -> OK) and copy and paste the text present inside the code box below:

    KILLALL::

    File::
    c:\windows\system32\ConTest.dll
    c:\windows\system32\ascbalon.dll
    c:\windows\system32\CreateLog.dll
    c:\windows\LIPMJEHG.exe

    Driver::

  • Very Important! Temporarily disable your anti-virus, script blocking and any anti-malware real-time protection before following the steps below. They can interfere with ComboFix or remove some of its embedded files which may cause "unpredictable results".
  • Referring to the screenshot above, drag CFScript.txt into ComboFix.exe.
  • ComboFix will now run a scan on your system. It may reboot your system when it finishes. This is normal.
  • When finished, it shall produce a log for you. Copy and paste the contents of the log in your next reply.
CAUTION: Do not mouse-click ComboFix's window while it is running. That may cause it to stall.

Then

Please go to [url="http://www.kaspersky.com/kos/eng/partner/default/kavwebscan.html"]Kaspersky website and perform an online antivirus scan.
  • Read through the requirements and privacy statement and click on Accept button.
  • It will start downloading and installing the scanner and virus definitions. You will be prompted to install an application from Kaspersky. Click Run.
  • When the downloads have finished, click on Settings.
  • Make sure these boxes are checked (ticked). If they are not, please tick them and click on the Save button:
    • Spyware, Adware, Dialers, and other potentially dangerous programs
      Archives
      Mail databases
  • Click on My Computer under Scan.
  • Once the scan is complete, it will display the results. Click on View Scan Report.
  • You will see a list of infected items there. Click on Save Report As....
  • Save this report to a convenient place. Change the Files of type to Text file (.txt) before clicking on the Save button.
  • Please post this log in your next reply.
In your next reply please provide:
  • ComboFix.txt
  • Kaspersky report
  • New HijackThis log taken after everything else completed

Hello Tomk_,

Ok, I removed the Viewpoint products earlier and didn't see them in my Add/Remove Programs anywhere. I also got rid of Azureus. I did everything as per your instructions. Here are the results in the order you listed:

slick8421,

It looks like we've gotten everything except for those strange O2 remnants. Let's try again.
      O2 - BHO: (no name) - ??68ED8-4CFF-4115-88A6-6EBB8AF19000} - (no file)
      O2 - BHO: (no name) - ??J - (no file)
      O2 - BHO: (no name) - ????B-68BC-4B02-94D6-2FC0DE4A7897} - (no file)
      O2 - BHO: (no name) - ????4-4C02-4ABF-8ECC-5164760863C6} - (no file)
  • Close all programs except for HijackThis.
  • Click on Fix checked
  • A box will pop up asking you if you wish to fix the selected items. Please choose YES.
  • Once it has fixed them, please exit/close HijackThis.
Then please post a new HijackThis log.

Tomk_,

Thank you so much for all of your help! Everything seems to be running much more smoothly now. I do have one question however...I've googled and yahooed that Lipmjehg.exe file and come up with nothing. Have you all ever dealt with it before? If so, what is it? Just curious. Here's the new log:
