Hi all.

My original topic started in the "Am I infected" forum http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/t/175337/spyware-infection/

I've been told to now post here a HijackThis log to check if I still have a problem. I might have a virus that steals personal information from my computer.

Below is the log. Thanks

Hi,

There are some steps here that we have to do first before we start with removal. 1st step is to make sure your computer is properly protected. In your case it's not since you are running an outdated version of AVG.
Also, Ewido is outdated as well since it's now a part of the recent version of AVG. So I suggest you uninstall both (via add&remove options) and reboot afterwards.

Then install the latest version of AVG: http://free.avg.com/download-avg-anti-virus-free-edition
Update the databases and perform a full scan with it. Let it remove everything it is finding.
Then reboot once again afterwards to let it delete the malware that was previously in use.

Also, I see remnants of Norton present here, because it was not properly uninstalled previously, most probably because you manually deleted it instead.

* To fully remove Norton AntiVirus or other Symantec related products, select the product you want to uninstall from this list in order to download the removal tool.
Please read the instructions first before you use it.

For older versions of Norton (2000, 2001, 2002), choose this link.

Also read the next article in case you're having problems with uninstalling Norton if above instructions didn't work, or noticed problems after uninstalling Norton: http://basconotw.mvps.org/SymRem.htm

Hi miekiemoes.

I removed the old version of AVG and also Ewido and ran a scan with the new version of AVG. Do you want me to post another HiJack This?

I have not yet removed Norton. How would I know what version I have? I know I bought my computer in the summer of 2004.

Thanks

Hi,

Please remove Norton First. For the Norton removal tool, it doesn't really matter what version you select, because it's the same removal tool anyway. So in your case, just select version 2004 or 2005 or 2006 etc..

Once you've ran it, reboot and then, after reboot, perform a full scan with your new AVG and let it delete everything it is finding.
Then reboot once again and then post a new HijackThislog.

Then we'll start from there and deal with the rest :)

Hi. I removed Norton.

I'm not suppost to reinstall the Norton program after running the Norton Removal Tool, right?

Also, is it normal for AVG to take 6 hours to do a full scan?

Thanks

No, because you can't have more than one antivirus installed.

And yes, it *may be normal that a scan takes so long. This all depends how many files and infections are present.
But on the other side, 6hours is indeed too long, so I suggest you stop the scan and reboot.

After reboot, * Please visit this webpage for instructions for downloading and running ComboFix:

http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/combofix/how-to-use-combofix

Post the log from ComboFix when you've accomplished that, along with a new HijackThis log.

I finished the scan with AVG.

Here is the HiJack This log. Please advise if I still have to run ComboFix as I heard that's the solution of last resort.

Thanks

Hi,

Please advise if I still have to run ComboFix as I heard that's the solution of last resort

Not sure where you've read that though. I do not recommend to use Combofix on your own. I mean, without guidance. This because it's a powerful tool and displays a log afterwards with a list of registry entries and files. The person who is guiding you analyses the log and creates an extra script to use in combination with Combofix to delete the leftovers that weren't deleted / found by other scanners.
That's why it may not be used without guidance, since many people don't know what script to use afterwards and just copy and paste a script they have found in a forum. This is dangerous since the script applies for the current computer only.

Anyway, please run Combofix and post the log in your next reply.

Hi.

before I start the steps, I just wanted to make sure with you if my computer is still infected. i see no signs of infection but someone at the "Am I infected" forum told me my computer has a virus that can steal personal info. from the previous HiJack This logs i've posted, do you agree with that assessment?

thanks

Yes, I do. It doesn't mean that you don't see any signs of infection, that your computer is clean again. Passwordstealers run hidden in the background and steal your info silently. After all, that's how they are designed, to make sure you won't notice it.

Hi,

As I thought....

Your computer is still infected.

First step.... * Go to start > control panel > Display properties > Desktop > Customize Desktop... > Web tab
Select Warning homepage you find in there and press the delete button on the right.
Hit ok below > apply in previous window.

Then,

* Open notepad - don't use any other texteditor than notepad or the script will fail.
Copy/paste the text in the quotebox below into notepad:

File::

Save this as txtfile CFScript

Then drag the CFScript into ComboFix.exe as you see in the screenshot below.

Hi,

This is much better.... almost done here..

Your version of Java is outdated and needs to be updated to take advantage of fixes that have eliminated security vulnerabilities.
Updating Java:
  • Download the latest version of Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 6 Update 10.
  • Scroll down to where it says "Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 6 Update 10".
  • Click the "Download" button to the right.
  • For Platform, select "Windows"
  • For language, select your language
  • Read the License agreement and then Check the box that says: "I agree to the Java SE Runtime Environment 6 License Agreement".
  • Click Continue
  • Click on the link to download Windows Offline Installation and save to your desktop.
  • Close any programs you may have running - especially your web browser.
  • Go to Start > Control Panel double-click on Add/Remove programs and remove all older versions of Java.
  • Check any item with Java Runtime Environment (JRE or J2SE) in the name.
    - Examples of older versions in Add or Remove Programs:
    • Java 2 Runtime Environment, SE v1.4.2
    • J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0
    • Java™ 6 Update 5
  • Click the Remove or Change/Remove button.
  • Repeat as many times as necessary to remove each Java versions.
  • Reboot your computer once all Java components are removed.
  • Then from your desktop double-click on jre-6u10-windows-i586-p.exe to install the newest version.
Then, * Go to start > run and copy and paste next command in the field:

ComboFix /u

Make sure there's a space between Combofix and /
Then hit enter.

This will uninstall Combofix, delete its related folders and files, reset your clock settings, hide file extensions, hide the system/hidden files and resets System Restore again.

Let me know in your next reply how things are now.
