ipod [3rd gen i think] cannot be detected by my pc

I tried different usb port, tried turning the ipod on and off, tried reinstalling itunes 8[latest version]...didnt solve anything.

It says USB device not recognized sometimes, sometimes it sees it but "installation failed" or somthing... Ive no idea why this is happening. Its working on my sister's pc though...but not on mine.
