Any upgrade from onboard will free up your processor a little bit. Soundblaster makes some of the best in the industry, there the only manufacture I have ever purchased.

The best of the bunch would be the Aureal Vortex.

As far as Soundblaster is concerned, they are made by Creative. For an Aureal fan, Creative is the epitome of evil.

Even if DID purchase the best sounding audio-card if only own cheap microphones and speakers the best sound card for recording audio would never be fully utilized. Even the recording software and plug ins effect the sound quality, have compromising any part of the recording process will reduce the quality of the end product.

The Aureal card is old but provides decent sound.

Both the Yamaha and the Aurial were designed for Win 98, so there's little point in asking "Which is better?".

I've had the Aureal and I liked it, others may have varying opinions.
