System: Toshiba 2450-101 Laptop P4 2.66 512ram 40G HDD
Win XP Home SP2 ( No OS CD, Only Toshiba Disks and this only has Ghost image, Have SP2 CD)

Original Post: http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/t/177012/no-networking-functions-after-virusmalware-removal/

Briefly:

"I ran Malwarebytes Anti malware and deleted all infections it found, however, when I clicked on 'Finish' it said some could not be deleted till the PC was rebooted would I like to reboot 'Yes/No'. I selected Yes.

when the PC rebooted I noticed that my taskbar had been changed, not the standard XP blue but white, also my wireless network box was not showing an IP address as it normally did. I thought maybe the Network connection needed to be repaired so I went to Control Panel and clicked on Network Connections and where I would normally see all the Icons all there was is a blank space".

Since then I have (as per HJT Guide):

Tried to Install Adaware 2008 - Recieve The Windows Installer 372 Error (See Attached Image)

Installed and run SpybotSD
Found and removed 1 entry of AntiSpyCheck.
Found and removed 7 entries of MyWay-MyWebSearch.
Found and removed 4 entries of FunwebProducts.

Run AVG AV & AS - nothing found.

Run McAfee Stinger - nothing found.

Tried Windows Update - Unable to connect to Internet.

Tried to make changes to XP Firewall - Receive Error saying:
"Windows Firewall settings cannot be displayed because the associated service is not running. Do you want to start the Windows Firewall/Internet Connection Sharing (ICS) service ?"

Yes/No - Selected "Yes" Recieve Error "Windows cannot start the Windows Firewall/Internet Connection Sharing (ICS) service".

Run HiJackThis - Log Attached

Hi alltrips,

Welcome to BC HijackThis. I am farbar. I am going to assist you with your problem.

Please refrain from making any changes to your system (updating Windows, installing applications, removing files, etc.) from now on as it might prolong handling your log and make the job for both of us more difficult.

Please copy and paste the logs instead of attaching them. Thanks.

The following step should be done precisely otherwise it won't work.
  • Go to start > run and type in the run box the following:
    • cmd
    • Click OK. A black command window opens.
    • Type in the command window:
      cd c:\
(note the space between cd and c:\)
    • Press Enter. It gives you C:\>
    • Highlight the whole following line, right-click and select Copy:

      copy c:\WINDOWS\ServicePackFiles\i386\svchost.exe C:\WINDOWS\system32\svchost.exe

    • Now right-click in the command window to paste the line in the command window.
    • Press Enter. You should get a notification that one file copied successfully.
    • Close the command window.
    • Reboot your computer now and tell me how it went.
  • To get an idea about the current condition of you computer download random's system information tool (RSIT) by random/random from here and save it to your desktop.
    • Double click on RSIT.exe to run RSIT.
    • Click Continue at the disclaimer screen.
    • Once it has finished, two logs will open. Please post the contents of both log.txt (<<will be maximized) and info.txt (<<will be minimized)

Note 1:The logs will be created in this folder: C:\rsit

Note 2:The tool takes not more than one minute to scan the system.

Hi farbar

Thanks for the assist. Just so you are aware I am not an absolute novice, I began computing when it was a DOS only environment (shows age reluctantly LOL ) it is just that i've never had to deal with such a heavy crash in a GUI environment.

Also I already have RSIT, Combofix & the SP recovery download saved onto usb stick, one problem though is that I cannot use Copy/Paste, Cut/Paste or Drag/Drop methods to transfer stuff on the laptop (as per original post) yet so I am hoping that will change when I complete your first task.

Here goes !!!!!

K farbar did EXACTLY as u said re the command window copy, no successful copy message came up. Then I realise there wasn't the word copy at the start of the string so I added that and presto SUCCESS. LOL

Now screen and all networking back. will now run RSIT

You are welcome alltrips, and thanks for your kind words!

We have still some work to do to get the job done.
  • Open Notepad (start-all programs-accessories-notepad. Or go to Start > Run and type in Notepad)
Copy/paste the following text inside the code box into a new notepad document.
    • @ECHO OFF
      attrib -h -r -s C:\WINDOWS\tasks\At*.job
      del C:\WINDOWS\tasks\At*.job
      del remove.bat
    • Select save in:desktop
    • Fill in File name: remove.bat
    • Save as type: All file types (*.*)
    • Click Save and close the Notepad.
    • Double-click remove.bat on the desktop.
  • Download ComboFix from one of these locations:

    Link 1
    Link 2
    Link 3

    * IMPORTANT !!! Save ComboFix.exe to your Desktop

    • Disable your AntiVirus and AntiSpyware applications, usually via a right click on the System Tray icon. They may otherwise interfere with our tools
    • Double click on ComboFix.exe & follow the prompts.
    • As part of it's process, ComboFix will check to see if the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed. With malware infections being as they are today, it's strongly recommended to have this pre-installed on your machine before doing any malware removal. It will allow you to boot up into a special recovery/repair mode that will allow us to more easily help you should your computer have a problem after an attempted removal of malware.
    • Follow the prompts to allow ComboFix to download and install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console, and when prompted, agree to the End-User License Agreement to install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console.

**Please note: If the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is already installed, ComboFix will continue it's malware removal procedures.

Once the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed using ComboFix, you should see the following message:

    Posted Image

Click on Yes, to continue scanning for malware.

When finished, it shall produce a log for you. Please include the C:\ComboFix.txt in your next reply.

  • Please copy and paste a fresh Hijackthis log to your reply.

I wanted to remind you once more that your computer is still infected and needs cleaning.

I'll wait one more day before closing the topic.
