Hello!

I believe my PC is infected. I have the constant "your system is infected. Download Windows XP software to fix the problem" type of message that pops up. My browser opens to Google, which is not what I had as my homepage, and upon opening IE and going to pages, it redirects to a screen that gives me two options -- one to download the protection software, the other to go directly to the web page without the protection. It keeps bringing me back to the same message screen.

I believe that I downloaded HJT, and got the shortcut icon on my desktop, but it won't launch when I double click on it. I read something in a forum that said, depending on what the issue is, HJT may immediately close upon launching, so perhaps that's the case?

Any insight is appreciated. I'd love to post a HJT log, but don't know how to launch from my home PC. Any other way?

HijackThis logs are not permitted in this forum. The HJT Team members are all volunteers who contribute to helping members as time permits but currently there is a backup and you may have to wait for assistance. However, we may be able to assist you here and resolve this issue without having to post a log so lets try that first.

Please download Malwarebytes Anti-Malware and save it to your desktop.

  • Make sure you are connected to the Internet.
  • Double-click on mbam-setup.exe to install the application.
  • When the installation begins, follow the prompts and do not make any changes to default settings.
  • When installation has finished, make sure you leave both of these checked:
    • Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware
    • Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware
  • Then click Finish.
MBAM will automatically start and you will be asked to update the program before performing a scan.
  • If an update is found, the program will automatically update itself.
  • Press the OK button to close that box and continue.
  • If you encounter any problems while downloading the updates, manually download them from here and just double-click on mbam-rules.exe to install.
On the Scanner tab:
  • Make sure the "Perform Quick Scan" option is selected.
  • Then click on the Scan button.
  • If asked to select the drives to scan, leave all the drives selected and click on the Start Scan button.
  • The scan will begin and "Scan in progress" will show at the top. It may take some time to complete so please be patient.
  • When the scan is finished, a message box will say "The scan completed successfully. Click 'Show Results' to display all objects found".
  • Click OK to close the message box and continue with the removal process.
Back at the main Scanner screen:
  • Click on the Show Results button to see a list of any malware that was found.
  • Make sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
  • When removal is completed, a log report will open in Notepad.
  • The log is automatically saved and can be viewed by clicking the Logs tab in MBAM.
  • Copy and paste the contents of that report in your next reply and exit MBAM.
Note:
-- If MBAM encounters a file that is difficult to remove, you may be asked to reboot your computer so it can proceed with the disinfection process. Regardless if prompted to restart the computer or not, please do so immediately. Failure to reboot normally (not into safe mode) will prevent MBAM from removing all the malware.

-- MBAM may make changes to your registry as part of its disinfection routine. If you're using other security programs that detect registry changes (like Spybot's Teatimer), they may interfere with the fix or alert you after scanning with MBAM. Please disable such programs until disinfection is complete or permit them to allow the changes.


Note: Some types of malware will disable MBAM and other security tools. If MBAM will not install, try renaming it. Right-click on the mbam-setup.exe file and change the .exe extension to .bat, .com, .pif, or .scr and then double-click on it to run.

If after installation, MBAM will not run, open the Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware folder in Program Files, right-click on mbam.exe and change the .exe as noted above. Then double-click on it to run.

Hi, again -- I cannot seem to access anything, without being redirected to a screen that indicates a "threat of virus" and asking whether I want to download protection or go directly to the page (without protection). So, for instance, when I go to Bleeping Computer, to get to the message forums (and to access the instructions you shared), I can't even get to the site, b/c the other window keeps coming up. It's frustrating.

I'd take any suggestions for being able to follow the instructions, from my home PC, or otherwise.

Perhaps you will be able to download then run MBAM fro safe mode with networking

Try reboot into Safe Mode: How to enter safe mode(XP)
Using the F8 Method
Restart your computer.
When the machine first starts again it will generally list some equipment that is installed in your machine, amount of memory, hard drives installed etc. At this point you should gently tap the F8 key repeatedly until you are presented with a Windows XP Advanced Options menu.
Select the option for Safe Mode with Networking using the arrow keys.
Then press enter on your keyboard to boot into Safe Mode.

If the above is not an option, try downloading from another computer (family member, friend, etc). Save to a flash (usb, pen, thumb, jump) drive or CD, transfer to the infected machine, then install and run the program.

Okay, seem to have had success with booting into Safe Mode -- thanks for the tip.

Here is the log from MBAM. Thanks for any further diagnosis and suggestions. I followed every step and this is what the scan log shows.

Edited after posting log: I re-started my PC, and don't see the Windows XP nonsense, so I hope that's a good sign. I DO get the following message window, though -- it says, "RUNDLL: error loading C:\PROGRAM(tilda symbol)1\MYWEBS(tilda symbol)1\bar\1.bin\mwsbar.dll" Any insight into this? Is it critical? Can I get rid of it somehow?

Rescan again with MBAM (Quick Scan) in normal mode and check all items found for removal. Don't forgot to reboot afterwards. Failure to reboot normally (not into safe mode) will prevent MBAM from removing all the malware. When done, click the Logs tab and copy/paste the contents of the new report in your next reply.

Here is my new log, after the rescan in normal mode. I'm still getting the "DLL" message upon startup -- I have not clicked on "OK", in the event this does something bad . . .


The new scan indicated 3 infected things (instead of the 50 or so, when I did the original scan. Again, thanks for all the help!

I'm still getting the "DLL" message upon startup

It's not unusual to receive such an error when "booting up" after using anti-virus and other security scanning tools to remove malware infection.

A "Cannot find...", "Could not run...", "Error loading... or "specific module could not be found" message is usually related to malware that was set to run at startup but has been deleted. Windows is trying to load this file but cannot locate it since the file was mostly likely removed during an anti-virus or anti-malware scan. However, an associated orphaned registry entry remains and is telling Windows to load the file when you boot up. Since the file no longer exists, Windows will display an error message. You need to remove this registry entry so Windows stops searching for the file when it loads.

To resolve this, download Autoruns, search for the related entry and then delete it.
  • Create a new folder on your hard drive called AutoRuns (C:\AutoRuns) and extract (unzip) the file there. (click here if you're not sure how to do this.)
  • Open the folder and double-click on autoruns.exe to launch it.
  • Please be patient as it scans and populates the entries.
  • When done scanning, it will say Ready at the bottom.
  • Scroll through the list and look for a startup entry related to the file(s) in the error message.
  • Right-click on the entry and choose delete.
  • Reboot your computer and see if the startup error returns.

Re: the original problem I was having. After the scan in regular mode, is there a way to be assured that the issue is resolved? My web browser seems to be working fine, now, and I don't have the XP Spyware messages, constantly. Based on my last scan results, can you say, is there any reason to proceed with any other scans/downloads, etc.?

Please download ATF Cleaner by Atribune & save it to your desktop. DO NOT use yet.

Please download and install SUPERAntiSpyware Free
  • Double-click SUPERAntiSypware.exe and use the default settings for installation.
  • An icon will be created on your desktop. Double-click that icon to launch the program.
  • If asked to update the program definitions, click "Yes". If not, update the definitions before scanning by selecting "Check for Updates". (If you encounter any problems while downloading the updates, manually download them from here and unzip into the program's folder.)
  • In the Main Menu, click the Preferences... button.
  • Click the "General and Startup" tab, and under Start-up Options, make sure "Start SUPERAntiSpyware when Windows starts" box is unchecked.
  • Click the "Scanning Control" tab, and under Scanner Options, make sure the following are checked (leave all others unchecked):
    • Close browsers before scanning.
    • Scan for tracking cookies.
    • Terminate memory threats before quarantining.
  • Click the "Close" button to leave the control center screen and exit the program.
  • Do not run a scan just yet.
Reboot your computer in "Safe Mode" using the F8 method. To do this, restart your computer and after hearing your computer beep once during startup (but before the Windows icon appears) press the F8 key repeatedly. A menu will appear with several options. Use the arrow keys to navigate and select the option to run Windows in "Safe Mode".

Double-click ATF-Cleaner.exe to run the program.
  • Under Main "Select Files to Delete" choose: Select All.
  • Click the Empty Selected button.
  • If you use Firefox browser click Firefox at the top and choose: Select All
  • Click the Empty Selected button.
    If you would like to keep your saved passwords, please click No at the prompt.
  • If you use Opera browser click Opera at the top and choose: Select All
  • Click the Empty Selected button.
    If you would like to keep your saved passwords, please click No at the prompt.
  • Click Exit on the Main menu to close the program.
Note: On Vista, "Windows Temp" is disabled. To empty "Windows Temp" ATF-Cleaner must be "Run as an Administrator".

Scan with SUPERAntiSpyware as follows:
  • Launch the program and back on the main screen, under "Scan for Harmful Software" click Scan your computer.
  • On the left, make sure you check C:\Fixed Drive.
  • On the right, under "Complete Scan", choose Perform Complete Scan and click "Next".
  • After the scan is complete, a Scan Summary box will appear with potentially harmful items that were detected. Click "OK".
  • Make sure everything has a checkmark next to it and click "Next".
  • A notification will appear that "Quarantine and Removal is Complete". Click "OK" and then click the "Finish" button to return to the main menu.
  • If asked if you want to reboot, click "Yes" and reboot normally.
  • To retrieve the removal information after reboot, launch SUPERAntispyware again.
    • Click Preferences, then click the Statistics/Logs tab.
    • Under Scanner Logs, double-click SUPERAntiSpyware Scan Log.
    • If there are several logs, click the current dated log and press View log. A text file will open in your default text editor.
    • Please copy and paste the Scan Log results in your next reply.
  • Click Close to exit the program.

Hello, again,

I followed instructions for ATF Cleaner and SuperAntiSpyware. When I rebooted into Safe Mode, I cannot see the ATF Cleaner icon anywhere (although I can see it in regular mode). The screen becomes enlarged, and the icon does not appear, nor can I locate it via Start/Programs . . .

I went ahead and ran a scan with the SuperAntiSpyware (in Safe Mode), and copied to Notepad, but when I go to get into Internet Explorer (in SafeMode), in order to post to this forum, it does not connect to the Internet (again, in Safe Mode). So, here I am posting, after booting back to regular mode. The scan only showed four items, Adware Tracking Cookies, mainly, with BleepingComputer being one of them.

Question -- can I run the ATF and then the AntiSpyware from Regular Mode, or is there something I can do to run it from Safe Mode (although I can't seem to locate it), and also be able to post the scan logs in Safe Mode. Sorry for all the questions.

After rebooting into safe mode, when you are at the logon prompt, make sure you log in as the same user account which you used to download/save/install the file. If not, you may not be able to find it file on your desktop. If your still having problems finding the file, go back to normal mode and move it to the root of the system drive (usually C:\) where you will be able to easily locate it when going into safe mode.

If for some reason you still cannot find it, then run the program in normal mode.
